I feel the exact same away about our defense for the next two years, and hope to be proved wrong. As for the softness, other than Gardiner and Nylander playing soft in front of the net and in the corners against Boston, I don't feel we got pushed around all that bad. Better protection of our goalie would also be good however.
But it doesn't feel like having a tough 3rd and 4th line is as important as it was ten years ago. Hence, many teams are going more for speedy and decently skilled fourth lines now, instead of big bodies and toughness.

From looking at how tight we're gonna be against the cap, how Dubas has said on podcasts he intends to keep all 4 Superstar forwards in the long run, and how he was quoted saying he has " full faith in the development of the young core of D coming from the Marlies"; it sounds like that's what Dubas playing his cards on. I think it's a bit risky, but I hope he's right.
I try to be optimistic and look back on how he was right about Andreas Johnson, Kasperi Kapenen, and Travis Dermott last season. He needs to be right about the upcoming D core from the Marlies as well if we want to have any deep playoff success in the next two upcoming seasons before 20-21.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GOleafsGO2018</b></div><div>So Marleau came to Toronto for a cup and is now waiving NTC when we get so close
And where you fit in 4M for bonuses earned this year by Matthews Marner</div></div>
I'm just starting to understand how all this bonus stuff works, so thanks for your incite. According to James Mirtle from "The Athletic" , there won't be any Bonus Overage to 2019-2020 as long as they don't put Nathan Horton on LTIR in 2018-2019, but still remain well under the cap.
"If you use LTIR all season, any performance bonuses earned carry over to the following season’s salary count, meaning an already difficult 2019-20 cap situation in Toronto would be further squeezed.
The only way the Leafs can be certain they don’t carry any money forward to next season? Stay well under the cap. Leave space for both Horton’s cap hit of $5.3-million and $3.7-million in bonus money, which would provide the requisite $9-million of breathing room."
So that being said, the line up I made could "technically" work in 2019-2020 as long as the leafs aren't reckless with the cap in 2018-2019.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CeeDee87</b></div><div>Ummm you don't need to worry about trading Marleau. You didn't actually get any LTIR relief from putting Nathan Horton on there cause you put him on there too early.
>Nathan Horton was placed on LTIR when the team had a cap hit of $65,063,333 resulting in a relief of $0 and a cap hit of $5,300,000<
The cap will also rise more than just $1M next offseason</div></div>
I'm new to this... how do we know when a good time to put Horton on LTIR is?

... also, why would a Performance Bonus need to be included in the 2019-2020 contract when he's already making 11+ mil? Did not think that was a common thing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Conor McDavid stopped being paid Performance Bonuses at the start of his 12.5 mil AVV contract.

Trying to figure out what you're saying in your second paragraph. Performance Bonuses count as Cap Hit, but CapFriendly doesn't include it under Matthews, is that right?
Matthews, Auston ELCPerformance Bonuses: $2,850,000 Waivers Exempt C NHL Age :20 Cap Hit:$925,000
CBA says it goes against cap "however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit."
So my understanding is that it doesn't actually become detrimental to a team's cap hit as long as it isn't over 7.5% of 75 mil(upper cap limit). Since 2.8mil is only half of that, then it wouldn't add to the cap hit.
But if I haven't learned properly, please tell me where I went wrong.

Does Marleau have a much higher chance of winning a cup at the age of 40 with Toronto, than with San Jose? Not according to the last 2-3 years of playoffs, but up for debate with Tavares. Let's try and win a first round despite our 2018-2019 defense, then we'll see. Saying that Toronto is "So close" to winning a cup when it hasn't won a round in 15 years is quite comical.
As for the Performance Bonuses, they don't count against the cap. If they did, Matthews Cap hit last year would have been 3.8 mil, not 925K according to this site. Only signing bonuses go against the cap, and that would be included in the AVV of 11.25 mil for Matthews.
