Auston Matthews!!!
WHY ARE YOU GIVING LOVEJOY THAT CONTRACT. ONE OF THE WORST DEFENCMEN IN THE LEAGUE, like seriously the majority of these "stay at home defensmen" are brutal. Every analytical metric says so. If you dont want the other team to score, keep/get the puck in the other end. Lovejoy and so many others that are perceived as good defensively are dragging their teams down whenever they are on the ice. Just look at the pairing of Dillion/Polak and Lovejoy/Cole when they were together in the playoffs. They got crushed in every way possible and were on teams that went to the cup final.
Im not even gonna get into everything else that is horrible about this one, which is pretty much everything.

I can't wait till people realise these top 3 picks are no different then any of the previous 5 years top 3. (Except for McDavid of course)
Please for the sake of everyone else not picking in the top 3's sanity, stop making these guys out to be the next Wayne Gretzky's................

your absoulutely right he was 3OA. but ever draft class is different. Everyone makes the mistake of comparing what pick a player was compared to the same pick from different years, while you should be comparing the players from the same draft. Erik Johnson is one of the worst first overall picks ever, but compared to the rest of his class hes one of the best. Strome is still a very very valuable piece but hes not the same as a top 3 pick this year.

Absolutely agree and disagree. Picks from different years don't necessarily correlate. Saying 3rd overall doesn't somewhat correlate though is not true. Strome was picked 3rd because he has 2 generational talents picked ahead of him. Any ordinary draft and he's the defacto #1 pick. Switch him with Matthews in draft years and position and you'd be singing the exact same song as your doing now, only for Strome. If Matthews were 1 month younger he'd be in last year draft probably in 3rd position behind Eichel and just ahead of Strome. So i will gladly say that personally i think Matthews is better in terms of value than Strome is but how you can come up with Puljujarvi ahead of Strome is beyond me. There simply isn't any proof of that and simply speculation.
Also yes looking back Johnson isn't worthy of being the 1st overall pick when guys like Toews and Backstrom were taken ahead of him but at the time he was considered the best of the group. We only come to the decision now that he's not the best of that draft because we've seen him play the past 10 years. If every pick the last decade were drafted the same year as 18 year olds, Johnson would be equally thought of as Matthews is and rightfully so. If Matthews doesn't quite achieve superstar status in his first 5 years, we'll be saying the same thing about him and yet how wrong we were now to think so highly of him.
There is nothing we can say to prove one draft pick over another is truly better. Only time tells us that. Saying Strome won't be at the very least just as good as Puljujarvi is ludicrous. You can't see the future and your making a prediction no one in the hockey world can tell you as fact.

I agree with you to some degree, strome is getting tossed in like hes just an average prospect, but there is perceived value in the unknown(3OA this year) even tho Strome was picked just last year we know a little more about him. he wasnt able to make the team right away, something Pulj is expected to do. I think the fact that the top three this year played in mens league and dominanted internationally show they are more likely nhl ready and more likely to reach their full potential.
Strome had two generational talents ahead of him, but you could argue he'd go 4 this year. Take away McD and Eichel last year, Strome only goes 2. EDM would have taken Hanafin.
The point is you cant directly compare a 3oa from one year to the next, or a 22oa from one year to the next. the quality of draft classes is completely random. You see some years the WHL is loaded with first rounders and years like this one they will only have a few. Besides Crosby, price and few other in 2005 that draft is horrible.
Strome is being undervalued in these trade proposals, but he went third, behind two generatlional talents and it seems like there is 3 this year

are you saying second pairing isnt a quality dman? instantly becomes their best dman and is still young enough he can improve. ANA has to move someone they dont have the money for them all.
lucic probably will get more than i gave him but not 6,5 over 6. no one is getting that in fa other than stamkos, no one can afford that as teams are smartening up in the salary cap era. we say the borderline/bottom six guys feel the crunch last year. with the flat cap many including myself think all players will feel it this year.

Quoting: PakNation7

Yeah, my though process here was to target teams with very little cap space who would never offer some of there's players deals upwards of 1,200,000 when they have to get their top players resigned. Then I also, kept the cap hits small enough so compensation wouldn't be necessary.
Penguins-Beau Bennett- ~10mil in cap space this offseason for a defensemen and probably a Sid/Geno winger.
Sharks-Dylan DeMelo- ~9mil in cap space to find Spalding, Polak and Reimer replacements and lock Hertl up long term.
New York Rangers-Dylan MacIlrath- ~18mil in cap space to resign or replace Kreider, Miller, Hayes, Yandle, Staal and Boyle.
Tampa Bay- Kristers Gudlevskis- ~Anyone who knows hockey knows this, Stamkos, Kuncherov, Hedman, Palat, Johnson, Killorn, Bishop, Vasilevskiy within the next two years.
And Ottawa isn't suppose to be tendering Wiercioch a qualifying offer.

good stuff/thought process, but for the rangers boyle is expected to retire, yandle probably walks, so theres enough cap space and a need for McIlrath.
I would be surprised to see SJ sign any of those guys. maybe spaling but he will be cheap. Riemer wants to be and get paid like a starter.
Wiercoch is still a valuable dman and ottawa could get more than a compensation third rounder in a trade.
Have fun with Mr. injury, Beau Bennett!

no need to get a goalie. Hellebuyck and Comrie are top end prospects at the position. Helle will get the majority of starts this year. No point getting a vet goalie for a very young team

I dont care how good Matthews is thats a massive overpay. Weve seen over the years that even Crosby AND Malkin cant do it all themselves. you need a solid supporting cast. Arizona has built up a solid group of prospects(mostly forwards) and i dont think its worth throwing a lot of it away, even for a number one centre.
I find it unlikely that zona could land both those ufa dman. Lets say they get one, their d is still crippled without OEL

Unrelated: do you(PakNation7) know how the rfa system works? Very unlikely that all if any of those deals arent matched.

not enough to acquire or sign barrie. theres not a single goalie that is available that is worth a first rounder by itself with the number of goalies that may be available becuase of the implications of expansion.

Hows that a roast? if your not going to put the effort into actually figuring out who may be available whats the point? Youve made a team of basically random mediocre players. I actually have been going through each team and figuring out who will likely be available so I can make an expansion team.

They wouldnt do that. Forward is not there need, they actually need a lot of help on D. (Strome, Domi, Duclair, Dvorak, dauphin and more at forward) From a pure value perspective I still dont think Arizona is getting a good deal. OEL is one of the best in the game.

Id expect both Daley and Kunitz to be let go after next season(maybe kunitz is brought back on a very team friendly deal) so there is the cap space. Barrie would defs be a luxury but one that as a pens fan Im salivating over.
