Montreal Canadiens signed Sean Monahan (1 Year / $2,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>MTL tries to bring their young guys up to give them a shot, a contract slot is already taken by Monahan... on top of that, it 1.9 mill that MTL still has to pay off if Monahan doesn't play well.</div></div>
He’s either going to be a top six winger or a 3C, it’s unlikely that he’s in the way of our younger players as things currently stand.
1.9 million is change from the Molson family’s couch cushions. This is one of the richest teams in the league. Even if he didn’t play a single game, nobody would care.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>Ok great, what message are you trying to send to other FAs then? Get your bags packed as soon as you get here because we're going to trade you? </div></div>
Monahan 100% knows this is the desired outcome of the deal when he signed it. He wants to play competitive hockey and earn his next (hopefully much bigger) contract in the league, this is just a platform to do that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>High risk, high reward... Matches MTL's offseason so far, pretty good move</div></div>
What high risk? It’s a one-year deal for a small amount of money in a season where the team isn’t seeking to contend. Pretty much the definition of low risk.
Anything they can get for Monahan at the deadline (in addition to the eventual 1st we were already paid) is a big bonus.

This was the first real test of the new management’s negotiating, and in the end Hughes came through with maximum term on a reasonable AAV.
Keeping the number below Suzuki’s is impressive.

(PIT/MTL) - Matheson for Petry, Poehling
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DongLord23</b></div><div>Thank you. He didn't get a 1st back, despite many fans saying he would. We agree. Glad we can settle that.
Saying "WELL ACKSHUALLY MATHESON IS WORTH A 1st (he wasn't and still isn't) SO HE TECHINCALLY GOT A 1st" is mental gymnastics. Enough of the rambling about irrelevant scenarios you made up in your head.
Matheson was not anywhere close to a 1st when the trade happened. If Matheson could've been moved for a 1st Pittsburgh who was in dire need of cap space would've done that. Let's be realistic and not delusional.</div></div>
This is a nonsensical line of reasoning. Hughes didn't trade Petry for picks specifically because he wanted an experienced defenceman to shoulder tough minutes, so we'll never know whether he could have gotten a 1st. The speculation around Petry's trade value was based on a misunderstanding of what management wanted out of the trade.
Hughes was able to finagle a player he obviously knew a fair bit about as his former agent and who he believed (correctly, it turned out) could be a top pair defender for the team. Frankly, that is worth more than a late 1st to most people.

Fair deal. We’re now extending him to be a starter for a few years, so he’ll need to make starter money. And the term is nicely tailored to the team’s goalie prospect development.

Solid contract. $3.4 is modest 3C money, no real downside for the team even if the Dach reclamation project isn't a major success.

If you're saying Buffalo should have taken him and then done those things, if they're on Monahan's no-trade list, they can't obtain him in the first place. There's no reason he would agree to be traded to another team and then bought out when that would mean less money for him.

(CGY/FLA) - Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>
I thought that if a player gets to an arbitration hearing, the arbitrator would award a one-year contract, but Cap Friendly’s arbitration calculator says, “Salary arbitration is a contract negotiation method that uses a third party arbitrator to determine a fair contract term and <em>length</em> for an expiring RFA player.” This implies that a player who goes to arbitration could get a multi-year contract. How does the arbitrator decide how long the contract will be? Could this have been a way for Calgary to have got more than one year out of Tkachuk? </div></div>
No, arbitration is never going to award a team any UFA years.

Obviously both teams didn't pulled the trigger without talking to the player's agents to learn their expectations for a new contract. Then FLO resigned Tkachuk right away..., WHERE IS CGY CONTRACTS EXTENSIONS!.!?!
Until proven wrong, getting 2 rentals is a bad return, however skilled, for a 24 y.o. +100pts rfa power foward.
I can see the drama coming in CGY. Contract saga all season and the team forced to flip Huberdeau and Weegar at TDL while being in a playoff spot. Yuk.</div></div>
Literally the only way this is a bad trade for Calgary is if they decide to let them walk in free agency (and don't win the Cup in the process).
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>*four low 1st. None of them will be top 20. So closer in value to 2nds than to the 1st overall.

After what happened with Gaudreau and Tkachuk, the fans all understand the situation.
Trades for guys like Huberdeau and Weegar would almost certainly be based around top prospects in addition to picks.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>I think they end up moving Weegar to Ottawa later this week for something like a protected 2023 1st Round Pick, Alex Formenton, and Nikita Zaitsev. </div></div>
Nobody is taking Formenton as a key part of a trade until the current scandal is resolved. As for the idea of the pick being protected, no way, any trade for a top pairing defenseman like Weegar would require an unprotected 1st.

If they don't want to re-sign, they can be flipped at the deadline for more assets.

(PIT/MTL) - Matheson for Petry, Poehling
From Montreal's perspective, I have to think that either we're going to be trading Matheson to somebody else or that this is a precursor to trading Edmundson, because (a) this trade by itself creates almost no cap space and actually creates less long-term financial flexibility since Matheson's contract lasts longer than Petry's and (b) we don't need more left D.
