I presume that's a joke? In fact is this whole proposal a joke?
Why are Nashville just taking two bum contracts off us for zero compensation and then trading away their best contract, captain, and perhaps most valuable player.
That Buffalo deal isn't even close to getting a top two pick. Rubtsov, while not a bust, has been underwhelming this season and two mid-round firsts don't equate to getting a franchise winger. You'd need to either add in a true bluechip prospect or add in a top 5 pick (which you'd need to acquire elsewhere). Teams don't trade top 3-5 picks for a reason.

Little light IMO.. 4 very young D it's risky!</div></div>
Reilly this year has been playing as a Number 1 D and playing along side Parayko would be lethal. Zaitsev I wouldn't consider young anymore as he is already logging in north of 20 minutes a game and has a couple seasons under his belt. And Dermott is showing flashes he can play in the top 4. Another season and he can establish himself there where he can log the heavy minutes. The bottom 6 is a little bit of a concern for me as well as I hope Rosen can develop better in the AHL. Preseason he looked great, but im hoping the one year in the AHL helps him adapt to North American Hockey.

Leafs Doughty
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>texleafs</b></div><div>Before anyone goes into the validity of giving up so much for Doughty, who has 1 year left, this would come with some guarantee from Doughty on signing an extension with T.O.
Just can't input extensions into future years...
And, this only has $40m on the books for 2019-20. Giving Matthews 11.5, Doughty 10, and Marner 6.5 leaves the leafs at $68m in salaries for 2019 with an estimated cap of $82m for $14m in cap space.
Only have to fill out a few spots with that $14m. The salary structure is do-able.</div></div>
Now this isn't me saying it's not an even trade cause I guess you can say it is... barely. Even if it is a guarantee he signs (which doesn't exist) as for the salary cap you didn't include salary bonuses or salary carryover and Horton needs to be on the roster on opening day. So your 8 mill in cap space goes down to about 5.5 million over the cap.

Well to make. it work cap wise, you would have to show how the 2018/19 cap works performance bonus and all. But these guaranteed extensions are silly. Yes silly. The Kings are not allowing the Leafs to negotiate with their star player to see if a deal works out. And if it doesn't Doughty has to go back to Kings, knowing his team doesn't want him.
Make a trade if you want, but these extensions, a year from when the contract end.....don't happen. "Some guarantee form Doughty". WTF does that mean. Nothing.

Leafs Doughty
Doughty is a great defenseman, top 5 in the league. When I see trades like this, however, I wonder how a single player's presence would be the equivalent of having Nylander, Gardiner and Carrick on the team. It's too much, given that if he's interested in joining the Leafs, he could do so as UFA the year after.
Not to be over-critical, but I also have an issue with Emelin and Lethonen. We have an excellent backup acquired at low cost, Pickard, who's ready to play next year. Not to mention McElhinney who is still under contract. It's Babcock's decision to over-use Andersen, not the absence of reliable backups. As for Emelin, we have Borgman ready to play with a similar physical style, and with more offensive punch.

What’s the ask for Faulk+Krüger?
I like the idea of a trade for these players. I don't know if a "sign and trade" could work here, but assuming it's the case, JVR definitely has more value than suggested, certainly as much as Faulk one-for-one.
My only reservation is with re-signing Komarov. I would pass and use Grundstrom instead, or Johnsson.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>The only advantage to a "sign and trade" is a player can get an 8th year as opposed to a 7 year contract. Don't know if JVR likes that contract and do the Canes really need a left winger?
Kruger seemed to fall considerably this year and is playing in the AHL. Leafs probably like the potential of Aaltonen who will be at least 2m cheaper.
The question is 2 years of Faulk worth a first rounder? Yea Faulk is an upgrade over Carrick/Holl. If the Leafs sign Russian UFA RHD Ozhignov, probably, not and the Leafs hold their ammo till they are truly a competitive team,</div></div>
Just read the sportsnet hype piece on Ozhiganov. "Great shot!" "Great mobility!" "Great puck mover!" "Heavy hitter!". Sounds like he'd step in and play 30+ minutes a night! Weird that he doesn't even play top 4 minutes for CSKA Moscow though...3rd pairing...behind former Leafs great Alexey Marchenko.
Justin Faulk immediately steps in as your second best dman (behind Reilly). You aren't getting him without giving up at least one of the 4 guys that were listed as non starters (Dermott Liljegren Nylander or Marner).

Tavares to Nashville - kinda saves us.
Couldn't NSH just trade Johansen to someone like MTL for a ton of assets and then sign JT for free if he hits FA? NYI has no leverage in the situation; they might get a little something for JT's rights, but not a sign-and-trade for a younger 1C.

McDavid is a generational talent similar to Orr and Gretzky, so it actually makes sense that other star players are paid less. A good comparable for Nylander is Ehlers, not Draisaitl.

Matthews Tavares Kadri Reilly Hanifin and Marner guaranteed for the next 4-7 years is essentially guaranteeing a Stanley cup IMO.</div></div>
True true. I just thought Nylander might be good to have so he can play both positions if needed.

Possible and Most Ideal 2018 Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Leafs have a one year window? What kinda logic is that. Other teams have multi years runs not reason that the Leafs are restricted to having just one run when their top guys on ELCs.
Leafs certainly don't need the aging andi injured Thornton or even Vernette. Just better ways to spend money. Tanev is another broken guy that the Leaf don't need. Keep the assets and spend Tanev's 4.4m elsewhere.</div></div>
I think it's maybe more a case of being able to spend $6+ million on a guy like Thornton for 1yr to have the C depth next year, instead of signing someone more long term and having those cap dollars taken up when Matthews and Marner need to re-sign.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorMcSchulenberg</b></div><div>What’s your reasoning for giving Nylander a bridge deal? I can understand it if your signing JVR long term but it ur not why wouldn’t you lock him up long term?</div></div>
I like the concept of getting Nylander on a bridge deal until Marleau's $6m comes off the books. Gives them the flexibility to add another piece in the interim. Of course it all depends on how low Nylander would accept on a 5+ year deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HawksFan28</b></div><div>Would you rather have Anisimov - a legitimate top 6 center - or Kruger who is making 3 million per and presently playing in the AHL?
Yes, I think a jump of 15 spots to upgrade from Kruger to Anisimov is worth it.
Also, the Hawks and Carolina have made a lot of trades over the past few years..... This is their opportunity to dump a contract on the Hawks while getting the best player in the deal. Lets not forget it took TT to dump Bickel's contract, now you can dump Kruger.
I mean the only reason why I would do that deal is because Kruger works in Chicago and I think the Hawks could snag Veleno at that spot - perhaps even with a later pick.
Lets not forget that the cap floor is going up too and Carolina is always floating at the bottom, at least Anisimov will be on Carolina's roster.
Besides, that trade is just a very small part of that team..</div></div>
But is AA a legitimate top 6 center? He's 30 and has never scored more than 45 points. To me he sounds like a really good 3C that can play top 6 if need be but shouldn't start there.

Bang on. To get quality, must give up quality. Those players just dont do it.
