Really its the only way to make it fair for current UFAs and RFAs. Also gives management some ability to negotiate longer term deals

Trading Offence for Defence
if u want to trade offense for defense here is a cheaper way of doing it. Sure the guys are not jones level but they are close and whats good the leafs do not need to trade one of the big 4 to get them

Karl Alzner and Adam McQuaid will never ever be in a leafs jersey. If they do i'll eat a sock. They do not match the team dubas wants to create, they dont move the puck well and their passes are grenades. Why block the path for liljegren, sandin, and rosen to play for those stay at home guys

You aren't in as bad of shape as the Oilers though. I shed tears for you but more for my Oilers. 9 picks in the first two rounds of the next 2 drafts is a good place to be. Just don't be Oilery and trade 3 of those picks of Griffin Reinhart.

You just signed a 31 year old to a 6+ million dollar deal with term. That is about as poor a decision you can make.

I'm not a big Zaitsev fan. But it's not worth it to sign Myers for that money. He's inconsistent, he's injury prone, and he's just not anything too special. He hasnt been very good this season. Definitely not worth paying 6.5 million for, and not worth moving those assets to clear the cap space for him

And average middle pair defenceman who is very good in his own end making 4.5 million, isn't a terrible contract. You would never have to give up Kapanen to move that asset. That is just silly.

This is absolutely the worst move other than trading mathews for alzner. Zaitsev leads our team in shot blocks and has been very defensively sound, being paired with gardiner isn’t an easy task and has certainly taken a toll on his offensive out put. All that said... he is having a much better year than Myers. Toronto gets robbed in the trade and then to add insult to injury you sign Myers for an extra 2m.
Then you trade the Horton contract for reasons unknown... sorry but this is less than 1 star.

You must be a Leafs fan. This is an awful trade for Boston. Nothing really else to say.
Edit: Looked at your post history and you appear to be a Bruins fan, in the fantasy business of trying to make the bruins worse.....Color me shocked! The number of Bruins fans on this site that have a clue is so small, you need a magnifying glass.

Its next to no money to buy him out, and it would actually save them money if they are trying to hit the floor and not buy him out. But yes I dont see him wanting to leave unless hes already decided

Tavares, keeping a solid core
It works,,,,but you did the math incorrectly. There is no carryover from 2018/19 on this format as it already has been calculate into the roster. 2550000. Add the expected bonus for 2018/19 ....4550000 is done by creating a player. (which you did). To be able to use the PB in 2018/19, Horton and his 5.25m salary has to be include included on the opening day roster, and the Leafs still have to be cap compliant.
After the first game, Horton can be placed on IR so the Leafs have additional cap space for the season....such as trades.
If Horton is on the opening day roster. I think I have the following correct It would be possible for the Leafs to have waiver eligible players such Borgman and Grundstrom in the AHL for the first game and once Horton is on the IR these players are recalled for game two.

keep JVR
I'm a big proponent of resigning JVR, and I don't believe that Carlson is the answer, nor do I believe that Nylander is in the range that you suggest. If Leafs offer Nylander an 8 year contract, I think it will come in around $6.25M. So that takes us back to JVR. If Leafs are to resign JVR to term ($5.75-$6.5 x 6), it can only work should Leafs (Lou) already know that they have a plan in place to park Marleau for the 2019/20 season! (Be it trade/LTIR). I find it hard to believe that's been worked out already and then it becomes more than a stretch to include JVR going forward!

Connor. Yep the lineup might look like this (except Rosen). Because the Performance Bonuses are so little in 2019/20, Horton could be put on LTIR before the season starts. That frees up some money.

Real $$ Structure - Matthews @ 8M, Marner/Nylander @6M
Point is, players don't have sign contracts that are offered by the their teams. Lowball players and they will just be UFAs in four years after their ELCs. Players and agents will be contracts given out in Edmonton and Buffalo, and even Nashville had 7.8m Weber contract years ago.
Don't know if the Leafs will have the cap to sign that UFA centre and LW, might have to get cheaper guys. Think you also lowballed some of those cheaper RFAs
I'm sure Nylander and Marner will be looking in Pasta territory and Matthews in Eichel range.
Gardiner, just don't see him as long term Leaf.

Could happen and numbers are realistic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorMcSchulenberg</b></div><div>How much carryover is expected? I heard they’d be looking at 5.4 million which would work in this situation.</div></div>
I've repeat this endlessly about the rules of performance bonuses. Look at the Leafs roster next season on cap friendly folks just might understand.
OK here is goes again. So you make a 2018/19 Leaf roster. You have to include the performance bonus carryover form 2017/18 which is going to be a 4m, You have to create "another player:. Now what I say next is tricky but factual. IF, IF the Leafs want to no PB carryover from 2018/19 into 2019/20, which is probably wise for the Leafs because for the high RFA signings the Leafs the Leafs would have to do the following:
1. As shown earlier they have to have 2017/18 PB into the cap space 2018/19 (create a player for 4m)
2, Pay PB of 2018/2019 in the 2018/19 of about 4m in 2019/20. (create another 4m player)
3. In order of to pay 2018/19 PF in 2018/19,Horton' 5.25m salary has to shown on the opening day roster. And this roster has to cap compliant to the 80m So that's 4m and 4m and 5,25m that if often ignored when creating teams. Horton then can be placed on LTIR after game one and the Leafs have 5.2 in cap flexibility for the season.
So assuming the Leaf don't want any PB carryover into 2019/20, the Leafs sign their UFAs, the Leafs have about 11m for UFA signing for 2018/19.
