In order to win a cup your money should be in your top 6, down the middle, and in your top 4. In a league with no salary cap brown and Hyman could be fourth line guys if they played on a stacked team. In reality they will either be continue to play were they are now or be traded as there simple isn’t enough money. Fourth line wingers will either be callups, ELCs, or cheap veterans(1,000,000).

Brown and Hyman are on team friendly deals not accurate representations of their value. Have you watched these guys play? Brown is a 20 goal scorer in his rookie year. The fact that he was on the fourth line at points this season only happened because the leafs are incredibly deep at RW. Almost any other team these guys are top 6/9. If you believe these are 4th line players you are out of touch with the rest of the league

I dont think you need to give up that much for Martin, u could probably get a late round pick for him.
If Arizona would do that, which I doubt, I think that’d be a great trade for the leafs.
Unless you can get Leo to sign a one year contract I can’t see them resigning him simply because of cap reasons, same with Ryan.
Peterson fits into Vancouver’s timeline better than Marner and vice versa. I would try work out a trade for Tanev without these two.

Why not????
You realize that the leafs trading Horton is absolutely stupid bc
1. they can’t put him on LTIR so they are stuck with that 2,000,000 on the books
2. Arizona (internal budget team aka poor) now has to pay for a player who’s not playing
So neither team benefits and both teams lose

Way too much time is spent talking about this for how incredibly unlikely it is. But I agree Tavares doesn’t say no quite as fast if they win the lottery.

Might be a little weak in terms of first line wings, but those top three centers together, and the sheer number of decent players everywhere else? Plus the defensive improvement in guys like OEL when they're no longer asked to play too many minutes in too many situations? This team's a contender.</div></div>
If they had a hot goalie I’d totally agree

They'd wouldn't do this unless they resigned Karlsson and went all in with this group which doesnt seem likely and theyd have too be mentally challenged which is slightly more likely. If something like this did happen i would assume they would want guys that would help them win now, not prospects.

Completely missed the point, I’m going high to prove that we’re not gonna have to rid of marleau to resign M&M
Ehlers just got signed for 6, same with Panarin... Even Pastranak got signed for less than 7... why are these guys getting more? If they wait till next offseason to sign Marner, and he goes off next year yes, he could get to or above 7, But not sure why Nylander warrants more money than these guys.</div></div>

Doughty? That’d be pretty sexy. Seguin or Tavares if they signed him 2018, or maybe OEL. Anyone’s guess really, the year after this marleau and Horton come off the books so it’s not like they need to save it all for resigning guys.

I could see Holl cracking the line up but I don’t see him getting any better than a 3rd pair guy given his age. Zaitsev and Hainsey will be top 4 next year and Carrick, Holl, and Ozhiganov (if the spectulation is true) will battle for the last spot. Liljegren has potential to be a top pair guy in 2/3 years but until then they should be looking into everyone available because ur right there not easy to find.

Every player in the league has that attitude. It’s like any job, if you do a better job than someone you want your pay to reflect that. He could easily demand max money and if he does that we have problems, everyone forgets that McDavids agents had the oilers at 14 million but he gave them a discount and settled at 12.5 Matthews at 11 is significantly less than what he could demand if he was only in it for the money.

Centre is the real question.</div></div>
A third line center would be great because you could keep nylander on the wing but a minute crunching defensive RHD is what’s going to make the biggest difference. Dermott will replace Gardiner on the left side when his contract is up next year.

Neither do I unless they take a big hometown discount which is not totally out of the question.

Real $$ Structure - Matthews @ 8M, Marner/Nylander @6M
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>Everyone sides with the players. If so and so got this much and it's x amount towards the cap... yes, that makes sense and some have to look at it that way. If however, you are basing your comps on team's that pay rather than win, you too will be on the outside looking in.
I could very well be wrong and Matthews gets north of 10 and both Marner and Nylander somehow get more than Pastrnak but if they do, there is no money left for anyone else.
I don't see it happening that way. Brown scored 20 and they gave him 2+. Hyman played the year with Matthews and he got the same. Kadri is paid as a 3rd line centre. Andersen is paid 15 or 16th highest among goalies.
There is the emotion behind what we think they should get and then there is management signing the deals. And aside from Martin and Marleau who were ufa's, name a Leaf player that this regime overpaid for.</div></div>
I want the leafs to lock these get guys up long term for as cheap as they possibly can. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a negotiation not a gift. If you offer Matthews 8 by 8 he’ll say no I deserve more than Eichel I’m the second best player of my generation. You can’t force players to sign contracts. Do you really want to go through arbitration with Matthews?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>McDavid is not a comparable aside from draft position.
Ehlers makes sense. Pastrnak - 34 goals and 70 points last year...not a comparable to either player. Like comparing McDavid and his 100 points to Matthews.
We want that production from our guys but it's not there yet. Marner and Eberle may be decent comparables although Eberle is more of a goal scorer.</div></div>
Marner is on pace for just under 70 points and he isn’t playing with two all stars all year so yes Pastrnak is a good comparable. Also ur forgetting that the salary cap keeps going up so a 6 mil contract 3/4 years ago would translate to a 7 mil contract next year. I would love seeing these guys sign this low but the reality is their agents aren’t going to let that happen unless they decide they want to take a discount (whole other discussion).

Matthews comparibles: McDavid, Eichel, Schiefele
Based on his two way play and point production you can confidently say that he won’t make less than Eichel. Expect 10-12 max term.
Nylander comparables: Pastrnak, Ehlers, Mackinnon
Expect him to make 6-7mil long term
Marner comparables: Pastnrak, Ehlers, Eberle, Niederreiter. The same or slightly less then Nylander expect 5.5-7 long term

Finally become a meaningful team in the league
This would be great except Arizona is the number 1 team on every players no trade list and that’s not going to change until they prove they be a contenter by getting better through building from within. You also wouldnt want Evander Kane’s personal baggage on a young up and coming team like this.
