Yeah. Let's draft 0 quality prospects for 3 years because of one good season, or not... VAN could just not do that.

A Packaged Deal And An End of An Era With Matthews And Marner To Arizona
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingExLeafs</b></div><div>No, it's a sincere trade. As much as I love Matthews and Marner, Leafs aren't winning the cup with them making a combined 26 million per year. It's just not feasible to ice a deep roster. Those two guys would have to be Superman and Batman every night. And that's too much pressure for any athlete.</div></div>
Yeah... TOR is not going full rebuild for no reason.
No team is just going to take on that cap hit.
And if the reason for trading them is that together they aren't enough to win, other teams know that too.
Also, why in hell would either player waive to go to a team no where near ready to compete for a cup that would have to sell all their futures to get them?
Get serious.

Your evaluations look fair to me. Van extends Blueger at that price though, and I don't think COL take Kadri. Another team will want him at that price, but term and NMC are an issue.

Teams don't just take on 10-11 million. That would be terrible cap management by Pitt. Two players making 10 who will never be worth it on an aging roster is cap suicide.

And the team itself is just futures, they don't have the roster to win anything so a massive haul for Keller wouldn't be a bad thing. However, I imagine the Islanders aren't they team to give that haul because there is no top tier prospect.</div></div>
My bad, Keller is a winger. But still their star player and more productive than Bo who is already not worth the money.

Tavares
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Except, they're not worse players... that's the point. Jordan Staal was literally 4th in Selke voting last year because he is an ELITE defensive forward. Fast goes with him to balance out the cap. You get two guys with 15 goal-30 point upside. You lose a player with 30 goal, 60 point upside, making double what the two individual players make. You get a 1st and a prospect to then get a RD and fill the hole. It's not a complex idea to understand lmao</div></div>
Apparently too complex for you when the math has been provided multiple times. You're either woefully unable to compute information, which is sad, or a big fat troll hiding under the Ambassador Bridge.

Tavares
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Staal only makes 2.9, and does everything Tavares does. Retaining means you get the extra 1st and A- prospect to get a RHD man. Toronto gets scoring depth, something that's been a serious problem, and the assets to move for a Dman. The only difference this trade makes is that you have multiple, better depth pieces on cheaper deals, and pays for the RD you need. There's no cap space for the Leafs if they keep Tavares anyway, so this does nothing but helps them was the idea</div></div>
Last time I say this: GAINING NO CAP SPACE DOES NOT SAVE YOU ANYTHING, and trading a 30 goal, 65-80 point guy for two maybe 10 goal guys DOES NOT GET YOU MORE SCORING.
Cap hit and points are numbers. You add and subtract with numbers to get the difference. Like this: 5.5 + 2.9 + 2.4 = 10.8 - 11 = DIDDLY FLIPPIN SQUAT, and worse players with no money to fill the void. DUH.

That amount of money committed to older defense, at the same time as trading away the young, affordable guys, beckons a UFA induced cap hell of the sort Treliving is a fan of, I'll give you that.

Tavares

Staal is a 3C, making a quarter of the cap hit, and better at everything the leafs need. They get out from under half of the deal, and get two clutch playoff pieces to help with the postseason.</div></div>
Do you not understand that retaining 5.5 just makes Staal worth 8 next year? And adding Fast means there are 0 savings. Toronto gains NOTHING and is worse for it.

Tavares
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Neither contract is bad, and I thought the idea of adding two proven clutch playoff scorers would interest Toronto. It provides a cheaper, replacement 3C for the Leafs whose better at everything a 3C should be doing, and adds another defensively brilliant winger that can play top six minutes, and has done in his career. Tavares' deal itself sucks, but getting out from under half of it for the year and having the assets provided to go and get a RD to fill the void was the logic.</div></div>
So the Leafs trade a 1B/2C for an old, replaceable 3/4C and no cap space? They aren't "out from under" anything if they gain 0 cap space. Make it make sense.

AZ isn't going to trade their 1C and only P/PG player (ever?) who's on a team friendly contract for futures and the remnants of a yard sale. More like Keller for Horvat+ if they do something like this, which they won't.

These trades make no sense for the Leafs. Retaining 5.5 on Tavares and taking on bad contracts screws them. How would they be able to replace him with no cap space? And affordable RD that can play then you're in your windows, they don't dump those for futures.

Way too much for Brady. Kyrou for Tkatchuk 1 for 1 is more like it. Maybe plus a 2nd/3rd. You aren't getting the equivalent of 4 1sts.

Why would Van retain on a permanent LTIR contract?
No one is giving a 2nd for struggling, expensive Mik. They will hope he turns around next year.
Not enough for big Z. Too much for old Tanev. Lafferty is replaceable for cheaper (Podz, Karlsson, Aman, etc). But you were realistic on Hronek, which is rare here.

Hronek will get more. I can't understand why Canuck fans think he will get less than Myers 5 years ago.
Also, way too much money and term for vets. No way they Benning themselves into no cap flexibility. Expect more 1 year Cole deals in order give them room to move on/swap out projects at the deadline. Like Lafferty for 4 years? Why? For maybe 10 goals? A player easily replaced with an ELC.
