Not saying Aho's worth it. This is just a picture of what a roster might look like and how NYR could possible get there. No handicapping the chance it happens. Inre Vesey, I agree with you. He's not worth it and the reurn in this scenario is probably too high. That said, I'm sure he would fetch the equivalent of a mid 2nd. I wouldn't pay that if I were on the other side, but someone probably does

Ha, you could certainly be right. This roster is just a scenario after all, not a prediction. Simply trying to illustrate a way in which it could happen.

How closely do you follow NYR? There is plenty of interest in all of the players moved into a trade in the proposal. They can all move, the question is only the return and to which team. Yotes and Sabres only chosen based on stated need and rumors. Could be another team. Since I haven't included any skaters or top prospects coming back any any trade, don't think the return here is crazy.
If continuing to play Connor Sheary and not adding more scoring depth was an option for BUF, they wouldn't be shopping Ristolainen etc. BUF has loved Vesey for a while. Sent a 3rd to Preds for his negotiating rights out of college and apparently have been in dialogue with NYR on Vesey leading into draft.
This isn't a cap dump scenario as all but Namestnikov have value contracts (including Vesey). And really, Namestnikov is only overpaid by about $1MM with 1 yr left. That's not a tough pill to swallow. The only time sweeteners are included is if the contract doesn't match the player's value. Maybe there is some retention in the ARI scenario, but it wouldn't be much (perhaps $500K)

I don't know about that. Not sure they walk away from four 1st round picks as they are apparently pretty far off from Aho's ask on price and term. A 5 yr offer sheet that looks like Matthews contract in structure at $11.25M would be really tough for the Canes

Buchnevich is no cap dump and a legit top 6 skilled fwd. Namestnikov is a solid 3rd line fwd can play both wings and C (albeit about $1M overpaid but with little term left). Only reason why it is ONLY a first coming back to NYR is Namestnikov salary.
BUF probably parts with a 2021 1st for Vesey as I'm sure they expecting that pick to be lower in the round than where they are today which means it is at least a 5yr future. the 2020 2nd rder might've been a stretch

Doesn't really matter in the context of the proposed roster. $8M per at 7yrs gets this done as well. The problem with how I constructed this roster is that it gives little flexibility to maneuver or improve the roster next next year, though it sets up for an aggressive push in 2021 and adds flexibility for expansion draft decisions. The defense still has a lot of issues to address and there is definitely some concern that Chytil and Andersson development could be in limbo at the expense of keeping Buchnevich around

Buyout next year. If he bounces back first half of 2019/2020 season, maybe we can unload him at trade deadline with some retained. No way he gets traded straight-up for anything right now at his current cap hit this summer

Smith is an obvious buy-out this year or next. No reason to subsidize moving him with Georgiev who will return equal or better (hopefully better) than Cam Talbot.
We (NYR) are at least another two years removed from even considering cap-dump trades anyway.

Thoughts?
Nash at $6MM for 2 yrs is a great deal for a contender. All depends on the return and fit though. R shot D values are clearly stupid as hell, so don't think that Blues deal works, especially with picks coming back (Blues cap issues not withstanding). Shatty is probably a trade deadline deal next year as #STL won't get full value this summer unless acquiring team is sure of an extension.
I suspect Gorton is trying to move Nash w/out retaining $ which is going to be tough. I think Nash could get a very nice return, but this off season has shown it won't be for a top-4 D man. Complicating the issue is Nash's M-NTC list. Apparently no Canadian teams are on his list which removes a whole lot of plausible destinations. Not to mention, he loves NYC. Given that, his list probably contains teams that are the least likely to be in need of his services.
Given all of the above, I think likely offers are 1st/2nd packages which Rangers obviously won't take. My guess is he gets moved at the deadline in Feb or not at all.

Yeah, no doubt about that. I generally think Rangers need to take a longer than 1yr approach though and figure this wouldn't be a bad start. Could probably sell at deadline in 17 to acquire some assets to swap for a blue-liner or hit up FA that summer.
Agree, doubt COL does it as well. Switch Girardi with McIlrath & maybe

Do you watch hockey? This is probably one of the more realistic proposals out there. Fowler is UFA in 2 yrs & Anaheim has younger, cheaper option at D with expansion draft coming up. Nash is one year removed from 40+ goal season, plays a fantastic 2 way game and while over 30, only 2 yrs left on his deal. With 2mm retained that is a no brainer for the ducks

That Wild trade is absurd from a NYR perspective. Brodin is a massive disappointment at a huge cap hit. Stepan is a legit 1B /2 right shot C and Hayes is worth the 1st rd pick alone. Stars trade is nearly as bad. Kreider is worth more than Lucic if he were an UFA. I get that Staal contract might be a drag, but Kreider alone could fetch a tidy return that would make hanging on to Staal worth it if your scenario is the alternative. While you've grossly undervalued the Rangers in the above trades, you grossly overvalued Girardi in the Lupul deal. Despite cap equivalence, Lupul is much more valuable at his cap charge than Girardi.

That is pushing it IMO but i'll leave it at that. Not having interest in Nurse makes no sense. The kid is 21 yo......do you not have interest in Ristolainen, Morin, Morrissey, Pulock either? the guy was drafted ahead of all these players.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dickie</b></div><div><i><div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NateB19</b></div><div><i>This EDM trade is absolute garbage. No way McDonagh returns that entire package. 4th overall in a top-heavy draft, high 2nd rounder, high quality D on EL and a roster winger with upside? Not to mention shaving ~$5 mil in prospective cap (including Tkachuk)? Come on... On a pure potential return basis, might be able to get more if the players were traded separately, but given the cap implications and needs of both teams, I think it works well.</i></div></div>
McDonagh is a just under a Norris calibre type dman at the moment. Kreider is a very solid second line winger and Mcilrath is a decent prospect with some upside. Nurse is a top defenceman prospect, Yakupov is a 10g 3rd liner or a 30g first liner, the 4oa is going to be a solid top line forward or dman depending on who is chosen and the second rounder is basically a late 1st rounder.
Break this trade down and you get:
McDonagh for the 1st and 2nd rounder = If I'm Edmonton I'm making that trade any day son.He is exactly what they need. The guys is a stud and is better than Vatanen, Barrie, Dumba, or any other dman currently available. NY has ginormous hole on defence now but replaces it with a projected top line forward Tkachuk/Dubois and another solid prospect.
Kreider for Nurse = With what Edm has on the LH side they can risk losing Nurse now. Kreider helps this team win now! Nurse gives NY a potential replacement for McDonagh down the road.
Yakupov for McIlrath = Hard to say. I think Yakupov is going to make whoever picks him up in trade look really smart if he's put in the right situation with quality leadership. The 1st overall skill set is still there, the kid needs a teacher and role model on his line to guide him to his potential. McIlrath is a decent prospect with some upside but hasn't proven enough yet. He could be very good or he could be average. Only time will tell on this one.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WALaxer19</b></div><div><i>As crazy as it seems, I don't think the Edmonton deal is outrageous value-wise.</i></div></div>
That's because its not crazy. Unrealistic maybe. :)</i></div></div>
Love the thoughts and you're spot on. McDonagh return is low, Kreider return makes sense & McIlrath/Yak is an arguable wash (cogent arguments for both sides). The kicker is the cap savings. Yandle gets resigned (not a replacement for McDonagh by any stretch, but still a valuable piece) and team now has some breathing room to maneuver. I doubt Gorton is taking a one-year approach to this offseason. Question is, does the move give the rangers enough to acquire/build a squad that can compete in 2-3?

First, doubt Lucic takes a 4 year term. Second, you don't want the guy anyway. Put's up borderline top-6 numbers (VERY borderline) & likely bottom 6 going forward., takes more penalties than he draws and is a horrible skater (not exactly a match for your Cs). Better ways to add size and aggression than paying near $7mm per for Lucic.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SNPmarty009</b></div><div><i>As an edmontonian who watches the team, I think you have a good sense on the trade value here, but the Oilers wouldn't be very interested in this deal because of the situation it leaves the team in. Just made up a mirror oilers roster of this trade and without nurse or that first it makes doing anything else pretty tough. For instance, mcdonagh is a left shot and kreider is a left winger. So on the left side we would have Hall, Pouliot, Maroon, and Kreider and on the right we have Eberle and Yakupov, who we want to trade. On defence it leaves McDonagh, Klefbom, Sekera, Davidson, Ference and Reinhart as lefties and Fayne as the righty. One of the big stipulations the Oilers are going to be dancing around this summer is they need right shot guys. Eberle is virtually the only right shot player on the team, so even though the value looks good, I don't think the Oilers would move Nurse and their 1st rounder just for McDonagh and RFA Kreider.</i></div></div>
I get where you are going as L shot needs to be viewed throughout the lineup as opposed to simply D. The most critical area in which having a R shot or two is on the PP, but that doesn't necessarily mean a R shot D. McIlrath is a big, young righty who doesn't have top-end foot work, but is very capable on the third pair currently and should have some solid upside and limited downside. While McIlrath has a wicked shot, until he develops a bit more he's not really a PP option though. Still solid add for Edmonton. To you're point on Eberle, I'm not an oilers fan, but as he is the only high-end right shot you've got it's probably tough for Chia to move him regardless of scenario. Also, we did take Yak in this trade.
