Arizona Coyotes signed Darcy Kuemper (2 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)

Hard to be unhappy with this deal. If Kuemper has a tough season, it's only two years - and if he plays well again, hard to see him signing something this cost-effective (and short term) rather than going to free agency at the end of the year. https://t.co/ilwZqaUbzN
— Catherine Silverman (@catmsilverman) October 2, 2019

To add re: Kuemper: even if Antti Raanta has a stellar year as well, let's say you decide to keep him and give him two years, $5M AAV. If you think that a team tying up <$10M in starting-caliber goaltenders is a poor move, you're living in a fantasy world.
— Catherine Silverman (@catmsilverman) October 2, 2019

personally, I think it's fine. it's a bit hypocritical of fans to expect goaltenders to accept lower money than skaters when goaltending is a very key part of how well teams do. sure, goaltending can be incredibly variable, but the Coyotes also employ a pretty good set of goaltending coaches, so, clearly, they like what they see from Kuemper. there's obviously some risk involved, but I don't really think any of their available prospects are really ready to make the jump in the near future, and the Coyotes look like they want to contend now, so retaining Kuemper for a couple of years past this one is a smart move, rather than letting him go to FA.

Nice numbers last year, and respectable career numbers. A nice payday for him, and a decent contract for AZ if he keeps it up.

If Merkley makes it out of camp
I see a lot of comments going on here and don’t feel like going through all of them with my own input.
I will say I completely agree with your lines but I woulda kinda want Merkley with Vlasic just to learn from, but Dillon is sensible too and as mentioned either way Karlsson gets Vlasic or Dillon which is good and Merkley would get the latter of them and still do well.

Quoting: MisstheWhalers

Coyotes defense is probably deeper then the Sharks is really, I'm not sure where this person is getting that they need help on defense and if they did there's plenty of veteran D left that could be signed for cheap, absolutely no need for them to trade Fischer for a depth defenseman.

As for that whole Arizona being deeper defensively is kinda confusing. Im huge fan of chychrun and OEL but deeper I’m not too sure. Maybe overall yes in the pipes I can’t comment but their youth is great. I will say if I had to choose whichever NHL d corps I’d pick San Jose with an unbiased vote easily, maybe in a couple years than it’s an easy ARI depends on development but chychrun is gonna be 90% likely of a absolute stud

Quoting: Frank_Booth

It’s a realistic assumption. You have to pay for talent. Mackinnons next contract will also be monstrous. You’ll find out soon enough, I mean Sakic paid 14 goal score Joonas Donskoi nearly 4mil. The market changes. Rantanen will make at least 9, likely 10.

Soon enough... We're talking in another 4 years! That is by far the best contract in the NHL

Quoting: Frank_Booth

Bitter somewhat? Must be tough being a Sens fan.

Not bitter. I actually came around on the return by the end of the season. Norris looks legit, and Balcers was a very pleasant surprise. Also I would name Dylan DeMelo Captain in a heartbeat.
Doesn't change the fact that the Senators have San Jose's unprotected 1st round pick this year, and the top of this draft is full of franchise altering talent. If the Sens could end up with two of those players it would change the face of this franchise immediately.
