Probably not my last

He does. He’s not, like, phenomenal at it, but he does. He’s probably better on RW at this stage, but he can play 3C. I’d call him a low-end PKing 3C, but he fills the need. And he could be due for a bounce back year. Last year was an anomaly as far as point production.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>moli92</b></div><div>How is it cheaper than Tatar? Saad only got 4.5 and had a better season. I bet Tatar comes in around the same AAV if not lower. Maybe it takes more term but that's fine if it gets a better player for cheaper. Plus I don't think Kerfoot is someone we want on the 2nd line anyway - neither Compher or Kerfoot is an ideal solution there so I don't think it's worth taking on the extra cap hit</div></div>
Middle 6 Tatar at ~4.5 + bottom 6 JTC at 3.5 = ~8
Middle 6 Kerf at 3.5 + 1.5 retained + bottom 6 ELC = ~ 6
I agree, neither Kerfoot nor JTC would be ideal in the top 6 if Newhook can’t hack it or when there’s an injury. But I think Compher has proven he’s definitely NOT that guy the last two years, whereas Kerfoot’s playmaking skill set MIGHT fit nicely next to Kadri and Burakovsky. And the Avs get some draft capital.
But I’ll admit, I’m probably a bit in “grass is greener on the other side” mentality here.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>Based on what? Compher literally had the worst year of his career last year, yet over the last 2yrs they have almost identical offensive production. Compher’s xGA, and xGD are significantly better, and on top of that the Avs get railed for being soft and let’s just say Kerfoot isn’t winning any physicality contests between the two. But most importantly the Avs have been here before and chose Compher over Kerfoot they aren’t changing their minds now and they sure as heck aren’t retaining salary in any trade as you clearly saw in the Kuemper trade.</div></div>
I can’t find any good xG stats not behind a paywall to verify, but Kerfoot has produced at a slightly higher rate over their careers. Maybe I’m just looking to make a creative change and would like to see how Kerfoot’s playmaking would do on the Avs who are pretty devoid of playmakers outside their top line. The Avs chose Compher two years ago and he hasn’t lived up to the contract they gave him, so with their roster in a different place, I think Kerfoot might be a better fit. I’ll admit, though, that I thought Kerfoot has been producing better with the Leafs than he actually has been.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>So avs are being slacked about being too small and too soft and we add one of the tiniest guys you can in kerfoot who is soft as well
That’s a bad middle 6 target not addressing avs weaknesses, just double down on. More the same</div></div>
I do not subscribe to the ‘too soft, too small’ narrative. The toughness the Avs need is mental, IMO, not physical. But that’s a debate that’s not going to get solved in any thread, so to each their own.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>moli92</b></div><div>This limits the Avs cup chances in the next 2 years for a player who likely won't be ready until at least 2024. You're essentially paying Kerfoot 5M per year and he's just not worth that. Avs can restock picks later, it's time to win now</div></div>
This is a win-now move for the Avs. Kerfoot can step onto the 2nd line much easier than Compher can when the need comes. Avs gotta find a guy like that, and pickings are extremely thin in UFA. They have to spend money on a forward if they want to have insurance for injuries or underperformance on the 2nd line, and this is cheaper in both money and term than getting Tatar would be.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boomer125</b></div><div>They've literally run a 20 man roster 2 years straight now, and Kase will end up on LTIR he always does, they'll likely lose 1or 2 of the 4 fringe NHL depth players to waivers the remaining will play on the Marlies, if there's a move out there it's Dermott out and a million dollar vet RHD or Lilly to fill that spot, the 2nd in this trade is too much and unnecessary</div></div>
Okay fair. I don’t follow the Leafs that closely to know their roster habits. I’d just heard they were considering moving Kerfoot earlier in the summer, and figured I’d throw an idea out there.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>The trade doesnt do anything for either side...pluys retaining is a bad move, so you made Kerfoot a 5m man bc of this? Thats just bad cap management</div></div>
Avs need someone in their middle 6, and Kerfoot is better than JTC at this stage. Spending the 1.5M via retainment for 2 years is better than paying the scraps that are left in UFA, IMO.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>moli92</b></div><div>Avs shouldn't be retaining anything - who cares about a 2nd round pick</div></div>
Avs prospect pool will be very shallow very soon if they continue to trade away top 100 picks. 2nd round picks turn into cheap ELC players that can extend your window. Kerfoot is a better fit for the Avs middle 6 at this point, so I don’t mind retaining some $$ as opposed to trying to find value at the bottom of the UFA barrel.

Avs Trade for Kerfoot
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boomer125</b></div><div>Leafs are under the cap without moving Kerfoot with a 2nd, no point to this trade from the Leafs perspective, it's lateral at best more like poor asset management now</div></div>
Leafs are 1.4M over the cap at present after the Ritchie signing. Sure, you can get under the cap running no scratches, but if they want any flexibility they’ll have to make a move.

Where do the Avs go from here
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Connor_McJesus_97</b></div><div>Good idea. Arizona should sell off as much as they can as tank for Wright. Kuemper plus a good young solid bottom 6 player in Fischer that can kill penalties is a good idea. Trade was fine aswell. Arizona easily accepts.</div></div>
Thanks. I think I might’ve overpaid in the trade. Maybe keep the 2nd. But Bowers can play for them right away and be a good piece going forward. Compher a good place holder. Miner isn’t blue chip, but his stock is rising.

Not bad, but I think Suter could get more than that.
And why sign Martinook, when Jost can do the same thing for probably the same price?
