EDM trade at the draft
You had the Oilers at "Reinhart". But yeah, this seems like something Edmonton would do: get a younger forward, get a defenceman who isn't made of glass... I wonder: would Sekera do it?

Screw You Islanders Fans
I care. Actually, I'm kinda wondering how this affects the players in the future. Are free agents going to want to play for that crowd? Will players be more open about their thoughts as they approach free agency, or less open? I'll be keeping an eye out for some kind of Tavares effect.

Hang on... Chabot, Boro, Harper, Lajoie, Wolanin... That's already 5 LD, and we haven't mentioned Englund. Is this the end for Englund's career as a Senator? I left Lajoie in the minors just because I was out of space, but maybe he takes Englund's spot... That still leaves Borowiecki as a scratch.

Those two are actual players for the Oilers. They wouldn't give anything up to ship them out.

Remember when most of the scouts said to take Ryan Murray and they drafted Yakupov instead? And one of them wanted Griffin Reinhart #1? Edmonton absolutely could do this. They've already shown no preference for centres. (Hall over Seguin) And besides, "we've had good luck with Finns in the past". (that was the justification for either Jani Rita or Jesse Niinimaki... can't remember which)

Crazy Huge Trade with Ottawa
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kzaker12</b></div><div>Says right in the description that this hinges on a signed Duchene and Stone.</div></div>
Sure, if they can sign Duchene and Stone right away, that parts good. But if those guys would become free agents anyway, and you could sign them over the summer... How bad is it to give up your 40 goal scorer, arguably the face of your team, for players you could've had for free?
I don't know how much the trade-and-immediately sign is going to become the norm. I feel like it should become the norm. It's better for the player and better for the team he's leaving. But as long as players keep becoming UFAs regularly, giving up the likes of Laine is almost unthinkable.

But... why would you hope that they like their existing one then? They're getting a new one. If the old one was no good, maybe they'll like the new asshole. It's the people who don't like their hole that should hope to be torn a new one.
But yeah, that's probably a no. Can't see Winnipeg trading Laine, definitely can't see them trading Laine for 3 soon-to-be UFAs.

That would be interesting because it would be the first time a manager in any sport is not just fired, but also ceremonially devoured by the team's mascot. Like, damn, that is "hire security to help you get out of town" level-bad. I don't think it even matters if Hart is actually that good or consistent. He's the hope of every Flyers fan, and they will not take that well.

Thanks. Damn, thought I had something there.
Oddly, the roster size restriction is in the CBA and not the actual NHL rules. I wonder if it changed with the new CBA.

We've seen teams come with fewer. Late in one season... I think it was the first season the cap was introduced, both the Flames and Devils started a few games late in the season with fewer than 18 skaters. The league said that that was fine, and a totally possible consequence of mismanaging your salary cap.

Anaheim might, but why would Calgary? Rittich has a better SV% that Gibson right now. Yes, Gibson has been good for a long time, but... The Flames might've found a goalie, and you can probably sign him for less so that you can fit your actually good team under the cap. Why give up two 1st-rounders for that potential upgrade?

Are We Doing Hawks Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Hawks definitely do not need another RHD prospect. They have both Boqvist and Mitchell ready next year and both are projected to be a #1 and #2 line player. Plus the Hawks already have Jokiharju who's only 19 and already playing, Murphy who's been the best defensive player for the Hawks this year, and Seabs who's contract will never get moved. That's 5 RHD guys next year, Hawks aren't looking for any RHD guys. On the left Hawks have Krys and Beaudin as prospects and Koekk, Dahlstrom, Forsling all as young 20's guys plus Keith and Gus. Hawks are in a giant logjam with defenders and are looking to move 1 or 2 pieces not add.</div></div>
Ah, I didn't realize Boqvist and Mitchell were so close to NHL-ready. Thought they'd be a while and you'd want another young RD to take a chance on in the meantime.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>What about Leon and Lucic for Saad and Anisimov?</div></div>
No. As much as I dislike Lucic, Draisaitl is too good.
Really, my thinking here was to put Saad and Drai together. I've long wondered what it would take for the Oilers to have that high-quality second line, and now that Draisaitl is demonstrated to be the best passer among the NHL's elite, I'm thinking he needs a sniper. And Saad gets most of his points shooting rather than setting up. If the Oilers are looking at Chicago as a trading partner, and have already stated a need for a winger, and are pushing to improve now, he's of interest. And for the Hawks... You're 2 points out of last place. You're probably not going to be a contender in the next two-ish years. And that's exactly the wrong time for Saad's contract to expire. If you're not going to keep him (and I suspect that you're not), get max value by trading him now and letting the younger players play his minutes. So what is the value of a decent scoring winger making a little bit too much money? I'd talk about Anisimov too, but he has an NTC, and no one chooses to join the Great Smouldering Oil Fire of the North unless they're really desperate.
If the Hawks don't want defensive prospects, and feel pretty well stocked at forward, then... nothing but goalies and draft picks? I actually don't think the Hawks are that strong at forward. Kunitz and Kruger are about to go UFA, and if Saad is leaving, that leaves you with 10 on the currently active roster. You could play Entwistle, Barratt, And Kurashev, but do you want to? Someone has to play limited minutes on the 4th line and play the PK. Jujhar Khaira is an actual NHL forward, has played on every line, is on the penalty kill, is a fairly big player, is only 24... He's not going to save anyone's team, but he's a useful player.
If we swap out Mantha for a 4th-rounder, does that get a deal done?

Edmonton fans jump at that deal. A real NHL defenceman AND Lucic is gone? Sold. Never mind that that contract extension for Duchene is awful and will make him the new Lucic, or that a 1st round pick just disappeared; those are future problems.
