In what world would Winnipeg not match that? Laine is going to get close to Kucherov money regardless of how he's playing any ways.

Laine is a one dimensional lazy player. He can't play defense. He wouldn't fit Montreal's defensive first system.

Dude Winnipeg has the cap space? Trouba and Myers are both gone. Laine and Connor will get the most. Chevy will make it work.

how about UFA Marner for Habs?

no way Jets don't match a Laine offer sheet

    Point might work too

but doubt Habs GM gives up 5 1sts for either and the required massive overpayment that will be needed to convince any player to come live in Quebec's tax situation.

I'd rather offersheet Aho. He would be a nice fit in Julien's system and he is a finn too! I also think that the Hurricanes wouldn't necessarly match a big offer. Something like 9m for 5 years would allow us to not pay 4 first rounder.

Always plenty of veteran D looking for a contract every season, I don't think it's gonna be an issue.

    Average annual value Compensation
    Less than $1,205,377 Nothing
    $1,205,377-to-$1,826,328 Third-round pick
    $1,826,328-to-$3,652,659 Second-round pick
    $3,652,659-to-$5,478,986 First and third-round picks
$5,478,986-to-$7,305,316 First, second and third-round picks
$7,305,316-to-$9,131,645 Two firsts, a second and third-round picks
$9,131,645 or greater Four first-round picks

Wouldn't that be 4 1st round picks coming Winnipeg's way on a $9.85M AAV? If so, Winnipeg does not match and happily takes 8 first round picks over the next 4 seasons. Their track record is impeccable.

Several teams in the NHL would be happy to roll Byfuglien, Morrissey, Kulikov, Chiarot, Niku, Morrow and Poolman (with Stanley and Samberg in waiting), assuming they didn't pick up any other players. That said, one of Trouba or Myers will resign.

Thank you. Sportsnet's chart is outdated. Winnipeg would likely match.

Anything under 4 1sts and Winnipeg would match on principle. If you offered 4 1sts we would take the picks as we could be a Price injury and some bingo balls away from a lottery pick. We also need the cap space and could keep other players that we may have to move on from like Perreault.

We built the current team with a few vets and then acquiring multiple 1st round picks (or players that were 1st round picks) in 5 out of 6. Repeating this cycle allows us to build another wave or easily trade for the biggest impact rental at the deadline each year.

2011: Scheif + Armia (your welcome)
    2012: Trouba
    2013: Morrissey + Dano
2014: Ehlers + Lemieux (1st pick of the second round... 1st rounder with 31 teams)
    2015: Connor & Roslovic
    2016: Laine & Stanley

I believe that if Laine doesn't play well in the playoffs/continues slumping, he has no leverage and Jets WILL NOT pay him 9M+. I believe they would still sign him long term if he accepted something less, but I could see a bridge deal or something to occur, fair for both sides. If then, a team offer sheets him above 9M they would probably match. But if they offer sheet over 10.1, no way the Jets should/will match. Take the 4 1st round picks and save themselves the cap troubles (I don't see them wanting this situation though). But this is why Laine will not be paid over 10M, and it should be less than 9.

No, if Montreal's going to offer sheet someone, it's going to be Marner. I don't know if he's actually better, but it's a whole lot more fun. Habs and Leafs haven't had enough reason to hate each other for a while.
