Cap room is worth more than we imagine - especially if a team is jammed up to the ceiling, like let's say oh....the Leafs

CO bought Orpik out and he re-signed with the Caps at a lower salary. That loophole got closed with the last CBA addendum three seasons ago. A player who gets traded in the off season and then gets bought out can't resign with the team that traded him for one season. JT can't be bought out this off season and re-sign w/ the Leafs until 7/1/25.</div></div>

this means Tavares could not sign a contract with Chicago</div></div>
other CBA info: A buyout can only be performed on a player who was on the clubs reserve list at 3:00pm on the most recent trade deadline
this rule would not permit Chicago to buy out Tavares in the off season.
So Leafs need to find a trade.

maybe you think the Leafs have leverage in this situation?
that's not what this is. Leafs are at a disadvantage. Getting anything they need in return + cap space is a win
not every team has the room to take on his salary, and Marner's destination list will be limited - waiving his NMC will come with some conditions

i don't see KK as a factor in an immediate Cup run (and the Leafs are not near one). Brodie on the other hand, as a 5 or 6D would strengthen an already great defense corps

people had similar comments about Semenko and McSorley oddly Gretzky and Kurri didn't mind having them on the same ice.
People like Klostin make people like Marner taller. and the space around them wider.
The problem is legit pushback with wheels. something the Leafs do not have and failed to do against the Panthers in round 2

Tanev can be had for cash this summer.
I don't see the Leafs going far in the playoffs, too many nonproducing forwards - not producing offence or defense at the critical moments in games. And the existing D corp is suspect

You really think Berube coaches a defensive juggernaut??? Blues GAA 19th in the league at 3.15, Leafs 21th at 3.17.
Blues Goals for per game 26th, Leafs 7th,
So you think Berube is the answer????</div></div>
Blues personnel aging, look at the key pieces traded or departed as UFAs after that Cup win.
coaches have a shelf life, and so do teams
see any improvement in the Blues after Berube was fired?
or maybe you noticed the GM telling the players changes are just beginning

Admitting the Leafs would be better this season acquiring three NHL Dmen and giving up just two, but not THAT much better.
By the way is Berube a better coach this Keefe???</div></div>
Yeah, nothing says Cup Drive more than two unproven smallish rookies on the team.
Leafs big weakness is defending, and Niemala does not defend much...
Berube's Cup ring suggest anything?
