Devils get nothing from the trade. Blackwood earned himself a spot on the roster, and taking on Neal's contract makes no sense to the Devils. If it was 1 or 2 years, perhaps, but not with the term attached.

What do the Devils get out of the Calgary trade? Swapping 1 yr UFA RD, and the "privilege" to overpay Neal for 4 years? I like the Zucker deal, but can you please elaborate on the logic for the Calgary trade?

Hertl Towards Playoffs
Why are you trading Coleman? Where's the value for that?
Huge overpayment for Hertl and Braun. Hard pass. Offer a lesser package for Labanc's rights. Keep Bratt in the process.
Also don't want to have Smith or Greene sitting out in the lineup, so unless Smith slides to the right side (possibility), I don't see signing of Chairot as a good move.

Trouba to NJD
As someone who doesn't know enough about Roslovic, I have to speculate some things. Is he a reliable PK player? Because the Devils are giving up 2 of their top 3 penalty killing forwards in this deal.
Zacha in 2019 was actually one of the Devils most efficient players, vs the guy in the first few months of the season. His value in this deal seems to be under-valued

By "Upgrade," I assume you mean the amount of salary being paid? But, I can see how trading arguably the best current defenseman + another top 6 Defenseman on the roster for a 4th line RW and a 4th round pick.
Can you please take over the Rangers? The Devils could use them having you calling the shots.

I, personally, think Marner demands more if Marleau gets traded before negotiating. Such a cool bond between them, I think that would make it more "just business" in his eyes. I could very well be wrong, but as a Devils fan, I watched it with Parise when Langenbrunner got traded.

Could you have at least gotten the roster size down to an actual number, so the money and outlook were a bit more realistic? Also, how can you be sure Callahan is on IR? This, and all of the above questions and concerns...

As for Marner, idk what you are talking about because $10M is well within the expected range unless you listen to Dreger</div></div>
Wording was bad in the Marner reference. It is absolutely an expected range, but the situation is odd, because if $10M was acceptable by him, I feel that deal would have already been done. The standards have been set by the franchise with Matthews, Tavares, and to a lesser extent, Marleau. Will be an interesting summer situation to watch for. I'll be interested to see how this cap situation plays out, while finding ways to improve the team

When referring to offer sheets, just because they were not signed, does not mean that there are none presented. And, there's no way Kapanen signs a contract for $3M when his value to other teams are in the low to mid 4's. He might not sign an offer sheet, but his agent will absolutely present that number to Toronto.
He is worth more to the team in a trade, much like Palmieri was for the Ducks a few years ago. There will likely be a bid war for him, as most teams could use him in a 2nd line (or better) role. Agreed that Toronto would match an offer sheet in that range, but I could see him getting a couple of picks (2nd and a 3rd) or immediate and affordable roster help for him, while not having well over $20M tied up in RWs

I respect and appreciate the hopefulness, but skipping over Marner... what makes you think Kapanen signs for that pricetag? Teams will likely offer sheet him between 4 and 4.5. And, they'll offer him something Toronto cannot (with this roster), which is a Top 6 role.

That's a fair assumption. However, that being said, he seems to love it in Toronto. If he were to return on a cheap deal in Toronto (very feasible) I could see the league looking into cap circumvention and collusion between the two teams. Definitely an interesting tactic, though.

Why the need to buy out Marleau? He has value. I doubt he waves his NMC to go to NYC to get bought out. Then again, maybe that's the only way he does it, so that he can then go wherever he wants to play for a discount?
If you could elaborate on that move, it'd be appreciated. He's on the books, he could really mentor this young forward group

Toronto trade doesn't do enough for them (and I am a Devils fan). It helps clear Zaitsev off the books, but only gets a 1 yr replacement in return. Kapanen worth more than a 2nd round pick, as well (even if that is what the offer sheet value is)
McLeod for Puljujärvi is an interesting trade idea, though.
Also, the Devils are almost guaranteed to be drafting Hughes, not Kakko, which negates many of these moves

I agree. Zajac had a great year this year. He is a very, very serviceable depth center and mentor to the younger players. If you trade a guy like Zajac, you move him at the deadline if the team is no longer in the hunt, not before the season to a team like Ottawa (which wouldn't want him at this point, aside from having him as a trade chip for the deadline).

Recapture Fee: For teams that signed contracts that were front end loaded for longer than 8 years (prior to the rule change) and the player did not finish the contract before retirement.
The formula is basically as follows:
(Dollar amount in salary the team actually paid minus the salary cap expenditure over that same period of time) divided by the number of years remaining on the contract
Kovalchuk: (($6M + $6M + $11M) - ($6.66M + $6.66M + $6.66M))/12 yrs remaining = (23M-20M)/12 = 250K per year for 12 years (the remainder of the contract)

Year 2
No need for Strålman in my eyes. Reilly Walsh in the pipeline should help round out the RD spot. Otherwise, you get a cheaper 3rd pairing guy, because that cap is way too tight (especially assuming that the cap goes up that much year over year).
Also, if Bratt keeps progressing, I could see him wanting a bigger paycheck than that.
Hall HOPEFULLY comes with a slight hometown discount, bringing him under $10M with the addition of a NTC/NMC as an incentive (his injury history limits games played each year, which is why his true value is in the same range as the Seguin contract @ 9.85M
This 20 man roster is a bit snug, and guys like McLeod, Bastian, Walsh, and Zetterlund will hopefully help in place of Donskoi and Strålman, providing some wiggle room and extra manpower.
I do love a lot about this team, and the main thing is Kapanen. I think he'll cost more than an offer sheet, but I believe he'd be very much worth it

Realistic Offseason
Even if this were "realistic," (blowing up the entire defense is not something I deem realistic) as a Devils fan, there is a major imbalance in this setup.
1. The ONLY righthanded forwards on this roster are Palmieri, Zajac, Reaves, Callahan. This isn't something that is a dealbreaker, but it is something that would not make it the way to go with some of these moves.
2. The right side of this defense is too stacked, where either Pesce or Severson is going to be playing 3rd pairing minutes.
3. The entire forward group is a step sideways compared to the current roster, however significantly more expensive. (Dzingel getting paid based on the last season performance going into UFA is buying a stock very high)
4. Majorly depleted the pipeline with many of these deals.
If you're targeting Pesce (not going to get him, but regardless), why go after Trouba, as well? You could keep Wood and then not have to trade for Reaves. Otherwise, in 1 year, you have lost another roster player, and gotten rid of everyone in the AHL that can step in and fill that hole. I could see Pittsburgh and San Jose "going for it" like this, because of the age of their core, but when your top 2 centers can't legally drink yet, time is on your side. You don't start trading 24 year olds for 32 year olds
