The Only Move That Makes Sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MapleLeafs97</b></div><div>Meh, agree to disagree. Currently, Leafs have Miky at 2LW, is Kerfoot an improvement? Yes. Is he a big enough improvement over Miky at 2LW to even make a difference in their point total at the end of the season? Questionable. The main point here is the Leafs need to put themselves in a position to improve their lineup at TDL, heading into playoffs and making one small move at the start of the year could put them on track to do so, playing it safe all year keeping Kerfoot around as a "just in case" or minor improvement at 2LW isn't enough to win in this league. It's all about having the best lineup come playoff time, not the start of the season.</div></div>
Kerfoot is significantly better than Mikheyev

Alex Kerfoot
2020 23 points in 56 games
2019 28 points in 65 games
Last year he got outshot and out-chanced pretty badly whenever he played without William Nylander at 5v5. He can’t drive a line, skates himself into bad ice and then chips it off the boards to nobody. He is good in the defensive zone and is ok at killing penalties but is that worth 3.5 mil? Frustrating inability to excel in the faceoff circle.
I would rather keep Mikheyev & Engvall for 2.9M combined, than Alex Kerfoot for 3.5M. Kerfoot is 100% expendable

What to do with Rielly
i think the decision on if he stays or goes is entirely based on Sandin's development and what Rielly's gonna ask for in contract talks

I’m down for sandman on pp1 but Rielly certainly plays pp2 and it’s not even up for debate.

yep
Sandin so far is making a case as if u can use the money elsewhere and bring in a cheaper but still good RD or forward or goaltender why not go for it

Savard had no issue shutting down the Leafs top 6 last play in series, who no doubt are much quicker than he is.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MapleLeafs97</b></div><div>Are you expecting me to whip my crystal ball out of my *** and pick a D that is going to be available in the offseason after next year? Like come on.
The Leafs will protect Rielly, Muzzin and Brodie and Seattle will likely take one of Holl or Dermott this offseason. Next off-season Rielly will walk unless they promote Sandin to PP1 early in the season keeping Rielly's point production from being so inflated or some magic happens and the cap starts to rise again. Sandin and Liljegren will be full-time Leafs at this point and ready for top 4 roles. Muzzin and Brodie will be the other 2 top 4 D. They will have whoever doesnt get taken by Seattle in Holl/Dermott and said "replacement defenseman" that will be Bogo esque signing to fill out that 3rd pair.
Now, are you going to freak out that a 3rd pair guy is "replacing" Rielly?</div></div>
How Dare you suggest that Morgan Rielly will not be a leaf forever, and is not the best puck moving defenceman to ever walk this earth!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>faulkmydzingel</b></div><div>We all know the play you're referring to. But in fairness he did the exact same thing to Muzzin earlier this year. Rielly is under a lot of scrutiny as he is the Leafs #1 Defenseman. That is a reality for any team. Rielly will also have an agent trying to negotiate for top dollar. That is an agents job. So yes I'm sure the dollar figure of 8 Million has been thrown out. But at this point its meaningless. I can see Rielly staying for around the same or less that Krug signed for in our flat cap world. Those calling for him to play LW have no idea about the game of hockey.</div></div>
I don't think anyone was legitimately suggesting Reilly be moved to LW, i think it was a poke at his defensive game. As for a similar contract to Krug, i don't think your too far off, but I'm not sure the Leafs want to spend that kind of money on someone that is more of a luxury than a need right now. i think they could replace Rielly with another Defense for the same price who is going to be less of a liability on the back end, and don't need firepower from defense. They pay 4 guys half of their cap space to do that.

trading rielly is a mistake, but that doesnt mean he hasnt been bad defensively this year and he looks so disinterested at times. theres really no denying that
its just an off year i would assume

This year is a bit different, because they're playing the same teams over and over again, but I used to get a kick out of this place when the Leafs would travel through the states, and the group of Leafs fans that only watch the Leafs would see/hear about players for the first time, then immediately think they should trade for them.</div></div>
Rielly is a good player and when defense is the name of your position and it’s not your strength it’s easy to throw some shade in Rielly’s direction.
The reality is the same as it is today, as it will be tomorrow. Rielly is a talented offensive defenseman that will infuriate you wanting more from him in his own zone. The question will come as how much of a liability Rielly will be heading into the playoffs from a defensive perspective, and if his offence outweighs that issue.
Considering that Rielly is half of the top pairing, the fact that you are experiencing the puck consistently moving in the wrong direction when he’s on the ice is probably a huge red flag.
And the fact that Keefe has even tried Rielly with Holl, absolute disaster, and Brodie with Muzzin, amazing, shows even he is wondering the same thing come playoff time. A Rielly Bogo pairing is something I’d like to see

I think Rielly should be tried at forward. But what does the d-core look like after that? I’m not sure it’s great.
To be fair, I guess it can’t be any worse defensively lmao.
If Rielly works at forward, I think they go out get a good defensive LD in the off-season.

Anyone who says the Columbus trade isn't a slam dunk win for them just hates the Leafs. A younger better forward and a younger defenceman with much more upside is going to Columbus for a guy with 1 goal and a 29 year old 20 point #4 defenceman. That isn't equal.

I think you both have a chance of being right with your opposing comments above. It’s simply differing opinions based on how you each value Pietrangelo and the Leafs’ D prospects.
Personally, I’m skeptical on Liljegren. Mono is not the sole reason he dropped that far in the draft. Other teams must have seen something in his game that gave them cause for concern. Is it possible that Liljegren or Sandin might one day play at the level of Pietrangelo? Sure. I just don’t think it’s probable which is why I would pull the trigger on a deal like this.
That being said, I think it’s a much safer play for Dubas to make low risk additions (pending UFAs) at the deadline and give his D prospects time to develop and hopefully contribute at some point while on entry level contracts.
This website wouldn’t be any fun tho if we all just rolled with the ‘safe’ approach

No, No, No.
Maybe I missed the meeting where they handed out the "Tanev Kool-Aid". WHY oh WHY are people so crazed about this guy??? I have seen him play many, many times......Hes a dependable D man (when he isn't injured, which is a lot) so I'll give you that. But you are willing to give up 2 firsts and 2 NHL players for him?? This is crazy.

"Would be nice" for Vancouver</div></div>
THANK YOU! I will never understand this obsession with Tanev, the league has several players like him that preform better and are less injury prone.
