Maple Leafs
Penguins will almost certainly lose Tristan Jarry on waivers next season since it seems like they already have their two goalies in the NHL with Matt Murray and Casey DeSmith. Who are the two very good prospects the Leafs would be losing in any of these trades?

I don't really care if they sign Gauthier or not..... but a million dollars buried in the minors has $0 effect on the salary cap.
Justin Holl could be a good 7-8 defencemen if someone got hurt.
I'm not sure if the trades are an overpay or not, but you will pay a fairly high price to get good young defenceman like Josh Manson and Esa Lindell.
Stephen Johns would be a good solid d-man for the third pair; I am not sure if I want to keep bringing Polak back every year.
It's very hard to find many decent d-men that are UFA's.
You will pay a high price for a potential first-pairing guy like John Carlson, or you will pay a price trading for good d-men......remember the Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson deal.......and Calgary gave up quite a bit to get Travis Hamonic.
I wish the Leafs would have pressed real hard to get a guy like Josh Manson a year ago, but he had a great season, and now the price for a guy like that will be higher.

I think they would be a better "all-around team" with trades like this. :)

get picks from Buf Cal Chi Dal Edm Mon LA Phi to take bad contracts
If these teams will give Vegas very good draft picks or prospects.....
from Buffalo - agree to pick J. Georges or M. Moulson
from Calgary - agree to pick T. Brower or M. Stajan
from Chicago - agree to pick M. Kruger
from Dallas - agree to pick K. Lehtonen, A. Niemmi, C. Eakin, or D. Hamhuis
from Edmonton - agree to pick B. Pouliot or M. Fayne
from Montreal - agree to pick T. Plekanec or A. Emelin
from LA - agree to pick M. Gaborik or D. Brown
from Philadelphia - agree to pick M. Read or A. MacDonald
---------------------------------------
Vegas can decide which players it wants to keep and then trade the excess.
If they ever needed to, Vegas could afford to buyout older players once they have become totally unproductive.

JVR Pens
The deals with the Leafs is not fair. I don't get to see him play much, but statistically, Maatta only has 3 assists I think, and he has regressed points-wise this year as far as his involvement in the Pens offence.
Maatta may be a pretty good young D, but I don't understand why you have the Leafs also giving the Pens a 2nd rd pick. We don't want E. Fehr, except to take back salary to make a trade work.
Pens would defintely have to give more for JVR.

trades to improve the defence for the future
In regards to someone's comments about the Montreal trade, the goal behind the trade proposal is trying to pry M. Sergachev away from Montreal while they "go for it" to contend in the playoffs. van Riemsdyk for Sergachev being the starting point of the trade. Assuming JVR alone is not enough to get him..... I give the Habs Bozak for Plakanec, saves the Habs some money and term on the contract but they get a similar/equal value player. It gives the Habs more payroll flexibility when they need to give new contracts to guys like Radulov and Galchenyuk. Adding in Emelin for Hunwick and taking on the bad contract of Dasharnais are to the Habs benefit right now for the aforementioned reason, and again to hopefully sweeten the deal for the Habs enough to get them to give up their best young D prospect Sergachev.

We're high on Nylander because we're probably Leafs fans. If we knew as much about Dumba or were Minnesota Wild fans, we'd probably think more highly of him. Getting better young defencemen is harder to do; yes, giving up Nylander may seem like a lot, but you have to give up something to get good young defencemen. Corrado isn't worth much to the Leafs if Babcock won't ever play him. All that said, I know Minnesota has at least 5 "D" and at least 8 forwards they would ideally like to protect in the expansion draft, so maybe you could get Dumba or Jonas Brodin for a lower price, but I still think you might have to give something significant like Nylander.

No Stamkos
It doesn't seem like anybody wanted Parenteau this year at the deadline otherwise you think the Leafs would have traded him. Maybe playoff teams are looking for someone a bit stronger and more physical. Consider the type of guys that usually get traded around deadline day.

Leafs Depth Chart
palhal - I've noticed that you are often good at offering a fair bit of criticism to the things that others write. :)
** That being said, I totally agree that the Leafs do not necessarily need Matt Martin but if the Leafs want more toughness on the team, he would be a great fourth line left winger. They have other options for sure - certainly just having J.van Riemsdyk, J.Vesey, L.Komarov, J.Leivo would make a great left side next season if they signed/kept all those players.
** In regards to K.Shattenkirk, he is one of the best options out there for a top pairing RH shot defencemen, although my personal preference would be a trade for T.Barrie because he is a couple years younger and is just an RFA this season.
** I mention T.Barrie and K.Shattenkirk because I just think that Toronto would line up better to potentially make a trade with those teams. H.Lindhom and S.Vatanen would be good RFA options (potentially available in trade) because Anaheim will have salary cap issues re-signing all their RFA's with a number of either big or bad contracts on their roster (plus they have some possible replacements for those two in S.Theodore & B.Montour). It just would be harder for Toronto to trade with Anaheim because Anaheim cannot really even afford to take on other contracts unless they can dump some of their forwards that are under-producing.
** If the "Leafs way" ends up being to sign S.Stamkos, THEN I think it makes sense to also try to trade for a guy like T.Barrie.
** Regarding Lupul to New Jersey for R.Clowe - Lupul is actually going to be paid less next year in actual salary than R.Clowe will. So New Jersey saves a little money and gets a body in the lineup if he is healthy enough to play some. In Clowe, the Leafs get a guy that for sure can be put on LTIR, if the Leafs actually do make other trades or acquisitions that would put them over the salary cap. (The Leafs might just send Lupul away and do that anyways!)
palhal - I'm not a kid! I am also a loooooong time Leafs fan. I do think things out carefully for a while before making any suggestions; and when I do make trade proposals, I certainly do try to make them fair for BOTH teams, not just the Leafs. :)
** If per chance the Leafs actually win the draft lottery and get Auston Matthews - it would be great to have a top-line centre added to the Leafs lineup, but I also think you would have to seriously talk to Arozona to see how much you could get out of them. Arizona has a lot of good forward prospects; my favourites would be: D.Strome, C.Dvorak, & C. Fischer.

just was not listing him with the other players because he is injured and likely inactive for the rest of this season ----- not saying that he was a contract that would stay on LTIR for next year.
Unfavourable trades for who?
I would not resign those players --- not sure what you're talking about. I was suggesting two trades with more to come. The lineup is just showing come of the players currently on their rost; it's definitely not a projection or hope for next year.

Who says nobody would take Bernier or Bozak or any of the others? They have never been exposed on waivers. Look around the league. There are plenty of players around the league signed to worse contracts than them. Taking back players in the deals is all about taking back the bad contracts of players that either can't do much (i.e. - Gordon, Hiller) or some like Nikitin, Fayne, Scrivens, etc. that even made it through waivers without being claimed and were sent to the minors. Do you remember how many draft picks Toronto actually traded to get Bernier and people thought it was a good deal back then! I understand Bernier's value is diminished right now, but some team that really needs better goaltending might still believe in Bernier's potential to do much better with a change of scenery.

I agree. What I prepared above was just a depth chart for THIS season. Want to let the youngest best prospects keep developing in the minors.
