Curious about the Jokiharju trade. How is his defence? I notice he doesn't seem to produce that many points. Is he primarily a stay-at-home D or has he just been pushed down the depth chart by the young guys?

ARZ just traded Chychrun for a worse package than what was offered by several other teams simply because they couldn't take any cash back. Their low attendance average imposed by the size of their current arena means they are running at a loss each month even if they are spending to the cap floor and abusing IR like crazy. Adding the return for Mantha and the return roughly equals that of Chychrun. There's also a risk that the Caps could perform even worse in the 24-25 season, which means that 1st rounder could be very high (possibly top 5), hence why I didn't add any conditional protections to the pick as a further incentive. I think my argument makes a lot of sense, given that Keller will be approaching UFA status by the time that ARZ starts to be competitive again.

No disagreement there. Personally, I very much prefer Orlov over Carlson.
Still, the way that the Caps have structured their cap going forward I very much doubt they could afford Orlov back. He will get 7+ million in the open market. People will point to his offensive production holding him back from receiving such a contract, but those numbers depend on powerplay time that he isn't getting due to their Ovechkin-Carlson setup. GM's and their analytics people most surely know this and see the numbers he could put up if put on the first powerplay unit.
Personally, I'd rather trade Carlson and use the savings from his cap hit to re-sign Orlov, but I just don't see management having the balls to do so.

Trying something out
I believe Johnson for Faulk straight up is a fair deal.
At first glance Faulk might have slightly higher value, but Johnson is signed for 4 more years and at a cap number that will look very appealing to a lot of teams, especially when you factor in a few more years of cap inflation.
I'm not sure what Dallas would be willing to part with to dump Spezza's contract, nor if they're even interested in dumping him at all. Still, Shore and a 3rd rounder seems like a decent return to take on the cap hit for a year. What I don't understand, however, is why you would buy him out with only one year left? It's not like they don't have the cap space to fit him in for that year. Why not simply let him go in free agency in order to prevent his and Semin's buyout from creating a cap deadweight of 4,83 million for the 19-20 season?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>?????. No it not common at all for teams to go with 20 man roster. It doesn't happen.</div></div>
They would obviously need space for at least one spare forward, which shouldn't be a problem for them. Kucherov and Stamkos both took relatively cap-friendly deals to stay in Tampa. There's no reason at this point in time to assume that Vasilevskiy's extension would be any different. There's also the matter of Sergachev. Do they bridge him for a couple of years to gain some cap flexibility while they are still a top contender? And in the unlikely event that they trade Miller in order to not lose him for nothing in expansion, the uneligible contract coming back would command a far lesser cap hit, more than enough for a depth addition or two. Last time I checked there were several teams last year who didn't field a 23 man roster. The Caps for example had 22 for most parts of the past season and it worked out quite nicely for them.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SammyT_51</b></div><div>You are missing 6 roster player and have 3.417 mil of cap space left. good luck. I think that Vasilevski should not get that much money you gave him. I would expect 7-7.5 a million more than Gibson if he stays this good.. also you forgot the expansion draft, where Seattle likely takes JT Miller. Cap space would be there and Tampa is going to be hell of a team!</div></div>
3,4 million is actually quite reasonable for the purpose of signing 3 players. It has become more and more common for teams to play 11 forwards with 7 d-men. 1,5 million for a 4C and league minimum for either a 4LW or 4 RW still leaves just over a million for a 7D, which is very doable.
I would think that if another expansion draft happens, Yzerman would sacrifice picks and/or prospects in order to keep Miller or alternatively trade Miller out for another player that is ineligible in the expansion draft. Unless a player matching to Miller's skillset is available in free agency I don't see Yzerman losing Miller for nothing, not while his team is still one of the top contenders in the league.

Cannot see why Vegas would pull the trigger on that deal. Schmidt could easily return a package like that on his own and they send Tuch to the Hawks as well. Cannot see it happen to be honest.

Faulk 2 DC
I don't see the upside for the Caps here to be honest. They already have a logjam of potential d-men on much cheaper contracts down in the AHL who will compete for that spot. Even if Bowey theoretically is moved out they've still got guys like Hobbs, Siegenthaler, Johansson, Williams, Alexeyev, Fehervary, Ness, Lewington and at the very least another half a dozen guys who could potentially grab that spot on the bottom pair at a fraction of the cost Faulk commands. Caps defensive prospect pool is extremely deep. I don't see a deal here. Wouldn't be opposed to trading Bowey for an equal value forward prospect though. Forward prospects are the Caps foremost and IMO only weakness.

So...Only exceeding the cap by 85 billion huh. Nothing that a cap dump or two cannot solve. Might I suggest you trade 1C Jagr for future Jaromir Jagrs and call up that AHL dude in Jaromir Jagr. I've heard that his play is tolerable. The dude is stuck behind too many Jagrs down in the minors. It's about time he gets a fair shot at it. ;)

Panarin
The deal does require some tinkering, but I must admit that a deal around Panarin for Josi is incredibly exciting on so many levels. Forsberg, Panarin, Johansen, Tolvanen and Arvidsson is a fantastic young group of forwards that would easily make the team a contender for many years to come. If Fabbro does emerge as a top 4 d-man, this trade might look even better. And do I need to spell out that top 3 on defense for CBJ? Jones, Werenski and Josi. That must be the best top 3 in the league. The only deal breaker here is Panarin. Would he resign in NSH?

I think Edmonton needs to add more here, a lot more! A 1st rounder and a 3rd rounder is more or less what Edmonton would have to add to Lucic to move him out for future considerations. At least at this point in time and with the cap hit and term that he has left. In your scenario Edmonton more or less gets Tanev and a 3rd rounder for free. We would probably be looking at the Vancouver riots 2.0 if this deal were to happen.

Leafs cap crunched
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>I hear what you are saying and in the right circumstance, I would pull the trigger on moving Nylander if it brought the right can back in return, but how many 22 year old defenceman are of equal value to Nylander? Not many, and the ones that are will cost more than Nylander and therefore it makes a trade almost impossible.
Now back to the lowballing of money. Fans are loyal and they want their favourite players and they want them all, and that's why guys want to lowball Nylander (Who unfairly is pegged as way below Marner, I think he's right there with him.) and give money he should get and spread it out to secondary guys because they like them. I've had so many arguements about depth guys and how you need proven depth guys to win and then they talk about Kapanen and Johnson as proven depth guys. Which is hilarious considering neither of them have played a full season in the NHL yet. My question is this, does losing Nylander or bridging him only to pay way more in 2-3 seasons make more sense than giving him an 8 year deal that results in losing one of Johnsson or Kapanen?
In my opinion, you lose one of those guys if they play too well and want too much money and then sign Nylander for 8 years. Who's easier to replace? Nylander's elite 5v5 game or one of the depth guys?
With Grundstrom, Engval, Bracco etc all looking like they could earn a chance to be a depth guy. I'd rather replace depth with cheaper depth than lose an elite offensive force. (His 5v5 advanced stats are in the top 25 in the league.)</div></div>
I agree with you and I believe that this argument of sorts boils down to the devil I know versus the devil I don't. If Kapanen or Johnsson or both were to have career years, this discussion would very likley be a lot more ambiguous. Some Leafs fans seem to take this player emergence for granted.
I very much recognize this thought pattern as a Caps fan from when Kuznetsov first came over and many Caps fans came calling for the team to go all in that season, slotting Kuznetsov in as their 2C, this despite the fact that the guy was yet to play his first NHL game. Now Kuznetsov did eventually emerge and this season was a testament to that, but many forget that he 'only' had 37 points in his first full season, not counting the 9 points in 17 games the season before.
I agree that Nylander are right up there with Marner and IMO any deal below 8 million a year, accounting for cap inflation, would be a bad deal for Nylander, unless he takes less for the sole purpose to win.
The bridge versus long term scenario is very intruiging though. Do you bridge him for 2-3 years and save some cap space for that limited duration or do you go all in for 8 years directly and save cap space long term? There's a case to be made that a bridge deal could benefit the team long term. He would be 25-26 at the end of a bridge deal and another 8 year deal beyond that would extend him to the age of 33-34. Extend him to 8 years tomorrow and he will be 30 at the end of the deal and still due for a new multi-year deal ranging into his mid 30's. It's an interesting scenario for sure. I think I would go for the long term deal of 8 years myself. It appears less risky long term.

Leafs cap crunched
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>What I don't understand about Leaf fans, (I'm also one, but think different than most) is how everyone wants to take money away from Nylander so they can keep Johnsson and Kapanen or Gardiner or some other depth piece. Nylander is the 5th or 6th best player on TO.</div></div>
I think this pattern of thinking really originates in your personal philosophy of what constitutes a good playoff team. Some people may value quality depth and a balance in cap spendings between defense and offense, whereas other people might believe in a more top or defense heavy team, where most of the cap spending goes. I personally believe that the truth lies somewhere in between.
There is a case to be made in regards to your argument that Toronto could potentially hurt more from trading or losing Gardiner more so than Nylander. Mind you, I'm not stating that Gardiner is a better player than Nylander, we both know this to not be true. But with Tavares, Marner, Kadri and Matthews all on the roster, the Leafs would still score a lot of goals and still have an okay defense with Gardiner on board. The same would most likely not be true with Gardiner gone and Nylander still on the team. They would score even more goals, but their defense would be exposed. Elite centers like Tavares and Matthews are fully able to elevate the point production of their wingers (Hyman, Marleau, Brown, Kapanen and Johnsson etc).
With that in mind there's a valid case to be made that the Leafs given the right deal could actually benefit from redistributing some of their cap space from offense to defense. Their roster is currently very top-heavy on the forward side, whereas the defense still presents some question marks. As a Caps fan I know all too well what can happen when you build a top heavy team at the expense of good defense. It usually works in the regular season only to fail miserably come the playoffs.
Now I know that trading Nylander isn't quite the same as lowballing him in contract extensions, but I believe that the idea originates in a much similar philosophy. That or they are simply undervaluing him greatly.

Smartest Line Up
Solid work on the lineup.
Also like the St.Louis connection there with Berglund, Sobotka and Thompson all on the same line. :)
It will be very exciting to watch this team a year from now when Pominville's contract comes off the books and the Hunwick and Bogosian contracts move one year away from UFA status. If Botterill were able to move out Bogosian's contract in a similar fashion to how he acquired Sheary by taking on Hunwick, then he would be in an excellent position going forward.

CAR and OTT trades
Like the previous posters on here I seriously doubt Ottawa would trade another first rounder out, even for someone as good as Spurgeon. They need more futures not less.
While Zucker for Faulk on the surface does seem fair, Carolina appears weaker at C/RW than at LW if you judge by the natural positions of their forward group. I know Zucker can play both wings, but he seems to do better playing LW. Coyle would perhaps make more sense for Carolina. However, from what I've heard he is the only natural right-shot on their roster so that may be a deal breaker for Minnesota.
Trading Spurgeon does make sense though. Minnesota isn't a cup contender and they need to get younger. The next couple of drafts looks really strong. Getting worse in the short term at the benefit of a few really solid futures could do wonders for Minnesota.
