Regardless if this is true or not, lets assume it was, I think that the idea that MB didn't pull the trigger regardless of whether Dubois was coming the other way or not is silly GM'ing on his part.

This was a PR move that although Weber became the great consolation prize, sort backfired in a way because of what the trade may have become if only he wasn't so hard headed.

I mean, was Puljujarvi so bad that everyone knew he'd not make it? Why did every scout have him so high then? and fine you didn't like Puljujarvi, thats ok, there were still a plethora of other prospects that were highly touted at the time that MB must have liked? Tkachuk, Juolevi, Keller, Nylander, Sergachev, etc.

Imagine making the trade and then trading the pick! How many teams would have been stoked to get the 4th overall pick......

This whole situation is the reason why I hate the french politics of the Habs. This trade essentially didn't happen (based on what apparently went down) because they wanted Dubois because he was french. When there were a ton of other non french prospects available that could have equally been just as good as Dubois.

And I know you are saying, yeah but look at Puljujarvi, look at Juolevi, Nylander, etc. They are "busts". We are using hindsight. At the time this trade was talked about, every single one of those guys was considered a big time prospect still. We would have killed to get Juolevi or Puljujarvi. Obviously seeing now we'd change our mind but we wouldn't have known that back then.

The there is also the idea that had it did happen, a new alternate timeline may have happened. Take Puljujarvi for example, what if he was being played in a sheltered role here in Montreal on a much better team that let him develop correctly? Maybe he wouldn't be a 50 goal scorer by now but is it out of the possibility that he could be a 20-30 goal scorer right now? I don't think so.

I'm happy with Weber but the idea of what could have been if the reports were accurate, piss me off because if think the team would be cap-wise and roster makeup wise better off today then it is now had they done that trade.
