Oil Country Lets realistically ride - feedback please

Other than Tavares. How many top end players have left their franchises? Hockey players are loyal. McDavid understands this and the core is extremely close, as again noted by there media avails today. Mackinnon took 10 years, Ovi 14, Yzerman 14, Stamkos etc. the reality is the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy in sports. Some tough experiences this year. But it’s not as if this team is far off. They finished second in the conference in the regular season by a point. Didn’t have Ekholm for 70% of the season and Kane for 50%. Not all experiences are linear.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>The cup or bust talk from Draisaitl and McDavid should have you guys really worried.</div></div>
worried why? this is exactly the thing you wanna hear from your entire roster, especially your superstar players. There is no consolation prize when you’re supposed to be competing for the cup. It’s the right mindset to have every year. There is no scenario of them playing together in any other market.. that’s the reality.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JuanDamienNebraska</b></div><div>It won’t cost to move Ceci. It definitely won’t cost a 2nd. A team will take him for free. He’s still more than serviceable. However, the Oil should keep him. He gels well with Nurse and only has a couple of years left. Severson will make much more than that.</div></div>
Appreciate the response. If the Oilers can move Ceci and find a more prototypical shutdown D man in the form of say a Radko Gudas at a similar cost to me that’s a no brainer based on the ask. I actually appreciate Ceci. Feel he’s being asked to do to much. He’s not overpaid by any stretch. The reason I suggest Severson is because he is a free agent therefore doesn’t cost anything besides money. How much do you feel Severson gets on the market? More term, AAV?

Appreciate the response. He had major struggles this season but there’s been lots of talk about some form of core muscle injury. The frustration isn’t on him as a player, nor his cap.. it’s the ask of the team for him to play top pair right shot minutes. I imagine he will full time be supplemented by Bouchard for that role next year as he continues to take massive leaps and maybe a more sheltered role will help Ceci. The problem is, being paired alongside Nurse you’re asking him to play tough matchups. What’s your projection on a Severson contract? It’s a very weak market for D men no question.

minimal cap clearing and realistic style moves - feedback
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MJ87</b></div><div>I like the trades and think they’re fair. Donskoi is under paid especially if you’re trying to get him to sign in EDM. Need to add to term and money.</div></div>
Thanks for your feedback. Fair point on Donskoi (Although he has been a healthy scratch 3/5 playoff games). Unfortunately I am not sure can afford a player over that salary in this scenario. If not Donskoi I'd take a long hard look at Vanek on a shorter term deal or Piiri at a lesser AAV.

realistic - cap clearing and smart trades - feedback please
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>I agree that this is a creative proposal (although not an original one), what I don't get is this:
Lucic @ $3M is a negative asset, so much so that it cost's a 2nd + a 3rd to move him
Lucic @ $2M is a positive asset, OTT gets a 6th back for him in this scenario
These 2 things don't jive to me. If he's a mega-negative at $3M, how is he now a positive at $2M?</div></div>
The positive is only having to pay him 1 million in real dollars. for a cap floor team that could be appealing as his actual count against the cap has zero impact on team spending. I understand that he takes a position away from a younger player. Look I wouldn't make this trade as a floor team, but I have seen enough bad contracts be dealt in the NHL that I have suspicion something along these lines will get done. "Hockey boys" love having veterans to teach young kids how to be "pros" and by all accounts Lucic in the locker room is very well respected at every stop he has had.

That is beyond a bad take. A log jam of players that aren't fit to play on an NHL roster. Benning analytically is a terrific third pair dman. Take plus minus as you will, Benning is plus 12 on a team that has a minus 37 goal differential. His plus minus - Nobody is going to do the Leafs any favour and allow them to move CB for a pick to clear cap space to sign Kapanen and Johnsson.

cap clearing and small signings - thoughts

Pretty well done..-~</div></div>
Thanks for the response. I feel in terms of wennberg oilers need to take a chance and try and buy low on a guy that maybe at his best is only a 45-50 point player, regardless still a massive improvement to their current crop and not an insane cost.
Donskoi is a 3rd line for sure but provides options and Elliot is a perfect compliment to Koskinen in terms of being able to take the reigns, maybe not for long, in case of struggle.

cap clearing and small signings - thoughts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Your logic is flawed is you think Carolina "needs to get to the cap floor". Just not true. Teams can raise their cap spending by signing players the have value then take on crappy long term contracts.</div></div>
I’m using Carolina as an example as a low cap spending team that can afford his cap. You could use Florida, the sens, Arizona etc as teams that are typically at the basement in terms of spending money. My point being his cap is not going to affect the team because they aren’t even close to the high limit, and his actual dollars paid isn’t that much if the oilers are willing to eat half - Katz is not short on dollars here even for NHL standards. Plus I feel teams, still value the things lucic brings in the locker room - and nhl gms live in the past - hence Chiarelli (lol) so it’s not impossible to imagine a team coached by Rod Brind’Amour finding “value” in lucic for no cost.

What do you think Oilers fans?
I'd imagine they match 4.5. Ducks have 9 plus million in cap space and only real important players to sign are Montour and Kase. In regards to Ty Smith, I love the pick if they decide to keep that spot. Preferably I'd rather them trade back in the draft, maintain the ability to pick a player in the later first round to continue to add to the prospect pool yet add a roster player. Example, trade number 10 to the rangers for the first rounder they have that is Tampa Bay's and get zucarello or krieder from a clearly rebuilding team.

Oilers 18/19 - realistic trades, massive improvements
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Rask isn't as skilled as Lindholm for a start and Lindholm is more versatile. Lindholm can play any attacking position. Rask is skilled enough to be a 2C but with rask's grit and ability and will to win the pucks back in the corners or to lay a guy out, I don't think dundon would want to move him unless they were getting a deal that was robbing the other. So theoretically this trade could happen because Peter Chirelli is a mad man. For value it differs. Lindholm is much more valuable. I could only see Rask getting moved out if you are paying for Lindholm if that makes sense</div></div>
Ah that does make sense. So what you are saying is we can expect a massive Chiarelli overpayment in the near future if a deal was to happen, buckle up. If there was a player from Carolina most likely to be traded aside from Faulk, who do you figure that might be? Skinner?

Not sure if the Pens are looking to trade either Letang or Kessel would look to add dead salary back, I'm sorry but that trade makes zero sense. As far as the Drake and Colin Larkin, you are not in any world receiving a second rounder for a fringe NHLer and a yet to even prove himself as an AHL C.

Oilers 18/19 - realistic trades, massive improvements
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nikeBauer4411</b></div><div>Carolina says no Lindholm is worth more than a 4th liner and a second.
Dallas trade does not make sense, not sure how a 1st can be pick #40 when there are 31 teams. I would think just a straight sway Strome for Janmark would be even if Dallas wanted to do that.
Carolina might like that trade but cant see them wanting to take on Sekera for free basically. As you are trading the 1st for Faulk and then throwing in Sekera so they would probably need more.
Not sure who Safin is so I cannot say much about the AA trade but think he will get at least 3 mil from someone in an offer sheet maybe, Janmark and Lindholm will get paid more as well.</div></div>
Thank you for your feedback, and I corrected that mistake, I meant the second round (pick 40), just forgot to change the initial part, it's corrected. IMO faulk based on his underlying numbers is not good 5 on 5, you are essentially trading for a number 4-5 dman that has offensive upside (has only produced over 40 points once in his career.. Yes he has a great shot, but he is not good defensively and that alone doesn't make him worth a top 10 pick if there is no salary retained the other direction.
Fair point on Lindholm, I understand Carolina under Tom Dundon appears to be looking to get "tougher", so i figure they are looking for kassian type players, Lindholm is probably overshooting things, but is Victor Rask available?
I agree that someone will probably offer AA an offer sheet and Detroit is kind of hooped against the cap if I am not mistaken.. Hopefully that team is Edmonton.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>I’m a canes fan. I’m not against giving up Faulk but you need more then that. Sekera doesn’t want to go back to Carolina and Carolina don’t want seekers back. As for the Lindholm trade. You need more as well. A fourth liner and a second for a Fifth overall pick isn’t fair value. Lindholm can be an elite player some games. Others he goes missing but when he’s own he’s unstoppable. IMO Carolina says no to both. Just one guys opinion though. Well thought out and the pieces you want would be available.</div></div>
Thank you for the feedback. I figure Edmonton would probably have to give up a little more but tossing in a first round pick might be enough, possible a younger man in Caleb Jones as well. Oilers imo need to be able to recoup picks in this deal as well. I agree Lindholm has value but based on the comments from Tom Dundon, he seems content on his team looking for more "grit".. trust me as an Oilers fan that shouldn't mean a sacrifice of skill. If you substitute Victor Rask instead of Lindholm is that more reasonable?
