With Ferland - Manage cap space for renewal of EP40
You said:
>> The Jets will trade their 2nd rounder for Tanev
Fair enough, but the trick is that I wanted to provide a sweetener to Ottawa unload Loui Eriksson's burdensome contract - it would take Tanev and DiPietro in my view (DiPietro and Eriksson probably wouldn't get it done). Vancouver could retain salary on Eriksson, but that would defeat the point of this trade. Vancouver needs to create cap space and retained salary on an Eriksson deal would still count against our cap.

Canucks BEST opening night roster
Close. Based on the first pre-season game vs LA, I agree with you having Jake Virtanen and Brock Boeser making the team. Goldobin is going to have to step it up a notch if he wants to make the team on opening night - I see him as a call-up from Utica in case of injuries. I'm going to say that one of Burmistrov or Dorsett will likely beat out Goldy. Haven't seen enough from Upshall and White to see them making the team from their PTOs. Bulldog Biega played so well today that I would see him taking Chatfield's place as the 8th D-man. Holm will probably go to Utica but I eventually see him as a call-up and eventually replacing Wiercoch.

Offseason
Good plan. But not 100% sure that Dorsett will be complete rehabilitated in time for the beginning of the season. Even playing at the NHL level again is a 50-50 proposition. Consider Michael Nylander of the Flames after his spinal fusion - he ended up in the Swiss league. I would expect to see either Goldobin or Dahlen in the lineup too.

2018-19 outlook
Two more years for the Sedins and then they are gone seems reasonable. However, I expect that the Canucks will trade or sign more firepower up front with all that cap space. Agree with Olli being on the team by 2018. But where is Brock Boeser? Would expect him to make the team before we see Cole Cassels or Grenier.

Thoughts?
Don't think Milan wants to come to the Canucks - he is pretty happy in LA. Troy Brouwer is a better fit.

Canucks Competing

Furthermore to my last post, I changed the proposed team as follows:
1. Buyout on Higgins (maybe unreasonable to get Coyotes to pick him up even on waivers). Otherwise bury hum in AHL.
2. In order to get the Ducks to take miller, offer them McCann as well - have to offer something decent to get Silferberg
3. As per your comments, I assumed that the Canucks throw a top notch offer at Demers (who unlike Gunnarson is a UFA). Four years at $6 million ought to do it - the Canucks will have the space without Miller's contract.
I still think this team looks good on paper assuming also that they draft Dubois or Tkachuk.

1. Good point on Higgins. If no takers on waivers, then they could buy him out or continue to bury him in the minors.
2. Regarding Miller, he still has some serviceable life left. He would probably waive NTC for Anaheim (wife is an actress and would like a California address). Anaheim needs goaltending, as long as the price is right. Canucks might have to offer up a pick, or take back some of Miller's salary or both to get the Ducks to pick him up. Maybe Silferberg is a stretch for compesation, so might need to offer a higher pick than a 3rd rounder in 2017. Before Demko is ready, it would be good to get a decent backup for Markstrom from the free agent pool - e.g. Enroth has a 9.22 GAA.
3. Regarding using cap space to sign a free agent defenseman, I am doubtful of the Nucks chances. I assume than the Canucks will try for Goligoski or Demers. But what to do if they don't have the best offer. The only good UFAs suitable for a top-4 D-man role who are not too old (Keith Yandle, Alex Goligoski, Jason Demers) will attract huge competition from US-based teeams and will cause the winning team to overpay a premium of $2 million or more ABOVE what the player got on a previous contracl. Probably would have to pay $6-$7 million for Yandle. I prefer the trade route and getting a good player at a better cap-hit. I think that Gunnarson for McCann is a fair deal, but only if they can't sign the UFA D they are looking for first. What do you think would be fair compensation for Gunnerson in a trade?
