Cost of Krug at 25M retained
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Stevie Wonder is typically not interested on small Dmen. Setting that aside, I'd like to note that an expectation of not winning anything is not a reason to sneeze at extra cap space if the right player or players are available. One doesn't necessarily have to be contending to splurge on an excellent player. That's how you get to contending. I'm not saying that player has already presented himself, but with the cap rising greatly the next few years, a Krug buyout gets more palatable at a certain tipping point amount of retention. I'm not an economics expert, so I can not tell you what that dollar figure is, but I am fairly sure it's well below 4M.</div></div>
I would rather have the retention over the buy-out because this team probably isn't doing anything meaningful until 26-27. You still have the cap space to splurge this coming year as your forward core should be cheap with a bunch of guys on ELCs. The cheap buyout year is wasted on a team that probably won't be to the cap ceiling anyway. Then you're stuck paying him 2m+ until 29-30 when this team could be making multiple runs. I would rather eat more money upfront and not impact too much of the future, especially if the Blues retain 2.5m the earliest window in 26-27 would be cheaper to have the retention than buyout.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Carleton</b></div><div>Good players still post good numbers even on bad teams. Parayko isn't a top defender. He's a 2RD on a good team. Plenty of public analyitic models that take into account individual defensive statistics haven't favoured him in years and suggest he's on the decline. Watching him is no different. He's just big and slow and massively overrated by Blues fans. No idea why they still cling onto this guy like glue.</div></div>
We cling in to him cause he plays a solid 24 minutes every night and we don’t worry about multiple defensive flubs. Also he isn’t slow, he is a top 1/3 skater in the league by speed and is something that (at least the blues) broadcast likes to talk about. On some teams like Vegas or NYR he absolutely is a 2nd pair RD but that what happens when you have an elite RD. On many teams like the blues or the leafs he is still a solid top pair player, would you like Better probably, but you can do plenty worse.

The blues as a team have never been good with the analytics and they still find ways to win hockey games. Parayko is a Defense D-man which is why the analytics don’t value him at all cause they focus more on offense production. I wouldn’t take the game against the leafs as a game to look at as the entire team decided not to show up. Parayko is a top pair D-man for the next few years and should be valued as such

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>To answer your question: Go get Jett Woo. Or Chatfield. Or hell, bring back Bortz. Or even Scandella at a low hit if he'll take it. Maybe Loof will be ready. Maybe Tucker (who has NOT been fine at all) will pull his head out and utilize his tools. It's very easy to find a 3rd pairing Dman.
To ask another question: How did the Blues screw with Scotty's development??? I have no idea what you're on about with that.</div></div>
I meant Scotty got screwed with injuryies and covid, worded that incorrectly, that’s my bad

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Like I said, inject Forsling into my veins, he;s a perfect Parayko partner and will not require as much as you're willing to give him. Not interested in the other two, especially at those prices, and at least one of Krug or Leddy has to go. Preferably Krug, but that will be harder to pull off unless we buy him out, which I am not opposed to.</div></div>
Assuming Forsling would sign and Krug gets bought out, where are you looking for a 3rd pair D-man to play with Kessel? I don't believe Scotty wants to come back here with how the organization has screwed with his development and Tucker is fine in small segments not a full-time 3rd pair guy.

Shuffling Assets
I doubt the Blues try and fill a 2nd C spot when they have prospects that look to fill that role in the next couple of years, While I'm not against going for Hanifin that is more than I'm willing to spend.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>So wait... you want throw 20M a year for the rest of the decade at Dmen but NOT move out any of Leddy, Krug or Faulk? We literally double the size of our biggest problem as an organization. Skjei and Forsling won't cost that much, and Hanifin shouldn't.
I'll take Forsling for about two year and a million less per, and other teams can overspend on the other two.
I also have no idea how one could figure Krug-Kessel has been solid. They've statistically been a good bit worse than Krug-Faulk, which has been our #1 issue this season. A 28.6% goal share. Brutal.</div></div>
The problem with the Krug/Kessel pair with goal share is that they are being deployed in a second-pair role which is tough for a rookie and Krug isn't the best defensively. You deploy them in a 3rd pairing role I guarantee you they excel but to move them to a 3rd pair, you need an actual 2nd pair which Leddy/Faulk or Forsling/Faulk gives you. If it fails next year all the contracts can be gotten rid of much easier as Leddy/Krug/Faulk move to m-ntc but I would think the defense would look much better.

Better off signing someone instead of giving up assets. Additionally, this offseason I dont think is the year to dive back into the D market and pay for another expensive D-man.</div></div>
My Idea in this is you have the money this year to get someone with a bunch of rookie deals and there isn't anyone coming up in the next year or 2 on the defense that needs a spot. Why not go out and find a stable piece that can match up in year 3 with Lindstein and maybe another pick to truly stabilize the D-core

Exactly. Let the offensive heat up again and get a true top 4 defenseman and they are cup contenders. Just a slump that exposes what they really need, they’ll be fine

What would you suggest being added to the Seattle trade to make it better?
