Building the Kraken Part 2 Everybody Hates Bergevin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs4ever</b></div><div>besides your disdain for Mr. Bergevin, have you contemplated the possibility that Carey asked not to be protected? he played his junior hockey in that State, his wife is from that State, his father works in that State, he has a house above that State, his mother lives above that State, his 3 kids will begin school in that State or in French in Quebec? all things to consider!</div></div>
I personally don't feel any particular way about Bergevin. I'm more looking at Habs fans reacting to a franchise legend and the man who basically took the Canadiens to the Finals single-handedly walk away like this, and NHL fans who feel Vegas and Seattle are getting preferential treatment with the expansion draft rules.
As far as your reasoning for Price goes, I think you're spot-on. Duncan Keith did ask for a trade closer to home because COVID restrictions severely limited time with his family during the season, so it would make sense for Price to have a similar reason. One of the earlier comments here suggested a package going to Montreal in return of Seattle picking Price, so it would be a start.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>I feel like Price waiving will have pieces going the other way. No wY MB exposes him to protect Allen unless there is a deal in place for Seattle to either pick someone other than Price (which seems unlikely because they could just make the same deal with Allen) OR Price wanted the chance to play closer to home and MB only agreed IF a deal with Francis could be made to send a package back to Montreal.</div></div>
It's a possibility. If Price does stay in Montral, my guess is Seattle would be going with Drouin and a combination of prospects and picks. As far as a package going the other way if Seattle picks Price, I would say Tierney, Kahkonen and a couple of the picks gathered up would be a starting point. They will have to replace Price, and might have to find a replacement for Danault.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>moli92</b></div><div>But I don't see why the other teams would pay you to take them. They both have positive value (it's actually debatable for Domi but imo his upside is definitely worth the risk for 1 year). Of course SEA would prefer to get more picks but it doesn't make sense why CGY or CBJ would want to get rid of them</div></div>
The pick for Giordano has some precedent behind it. Pittsburgh gave Vegas a future second-round pick to select MAF, even though it was likely he was going to be their pick anyway. It's a goodwill gesture towards a franchise legend and, once again, gives Seattle a safety net if Giordano is only going to be there for a season.
Domi, on the other hand, might need to have a pick attached. If he gets picked up, Seattle's going to be his third team in as many years, so that might lead to a few loyalty questions. Plus, Columbus has a few other potential options that have upside and/or fill roles for the Kraken like Stenlund, Kukan, and even Carlsson. The pick doubles as added security and ensuring Seattle doesn't change course and takes Domi's final year off their books.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boggsauce</b></div><div>My gut says take tarasenko but Dunn could be Seattle’s version of Theodore in Vegas</div></div>
It would be interesting, but Tarasenko would require at least a couple of sweeteners that I don't know if St. Louis wants to give up. That, and adding Tarasenko just wouldn't be feasible if Seattle gets Price, Johansen, and Voracek.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>moli92</b></div><div>Same with Domi. I think SEA would take both of those players with nothing attached</div></div>
My rationale for the added picks was to use them as security in case one or both are either dealt at the deadline or go somewhere else in free agency. I expect them to be the picks anyway, but I think Seattle would feel more comfortable going for them if they knew they could get more than just one year of production out of the deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>If seattle doesn’t take gio, the flames are more than happy to keep their captain and top pair blueliner lol, not losing him is a fine outcome. The cap flexibility is nice, but we can with around one more year of gio and it fits valimaki’s developmental timeline better</div></div>
Seattle could choose to for someone like Gawdin or Kylington if they decide to go another route with their bigger cap hits. Gawdin has the more upside of the two imo, so if Giordano isn't moving, he'd make for a nice Plan B.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nativewulf</b></div><div>Nashville won’t give that much to dump Johansen, maybe a 2nd Rounder and a prospect like Pitlick or Davies. I don’t see Nash giving a 1st and Ingram in this</div></div>
I think Nashville is in the same boat as Philadelphia where they come out alright in the expansion draft is if one of their big contracts is off the books. A 1st and Ingram looks like a lot, but context makes it a bit more understandable. This year's draft class is one of the thinner ones in recent years, and the guaranteed impact talent will likely be gone by the time Nashville would be on the clock. Ingram's a solid young goaltender, but I'm not sure where he fits in Nashville anymore. Saros is the obvious goaltender for now while Askarov is the future franchise goaltender, leaving Ingram in a strange position within the organization. It might not be the worst idea to let Ingram find a long-term home, have the Preds sign competent backup goaltenders to Saros (or re-sign Rinne if he doesn't retire), and then have Askarov fill the spot when he can be signed. Pitlick and the 4th are sweeteners, and adding them allows me to be consistent with how I approached Philly.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gmonwy</b></div><div>Flames will let Seattle take whoever they want IMO</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CJets</b></div><div>The Flames aren’t gonna give up a pick for y’all to take Giordano, since everyone else we want to keep is either already protected or too young to be eligible</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>flames won’t pay anything extra to seattle, least of all to take the only impact player they’re leaving exposed</div></div>
The pick isn't so much to guarantee the Kraken pick Giordano, more than it is for some added security in case Giordano is only in Seattle for a year. He's basically to Seattle what Marc-Andre Fleury was to Vegas: a franchise legend that's a logical choice, but isn't firmly in the long-term plans of their new team. Does Giordano decide to finish his career in Seattle, like Fleury will likely do in Vegas? Does he head back to Calgary or sign with a Cup contender next offseason? Does Seattle go down the tubes and move him at the deadline? You could argue that the pick should be in 2023 instead of 2022, but I think Seattle would feel a lot better about going the Giordano route if they can at least guarantee something out of the deal.
Besides, if the Flames move Gaudreau and/or Monahan this offseason (and I think they should), they'll get at least one or two pieces more valuable than the pick they give Seattle, so it balances out.
