<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jangle29</b></div><div>After taking many contracts, comparables and rumored offers over the cap era it seems like 6% is an average amount of cash that eats up UFA years when signing.
If you use that logic, and apply the cap% of this deal, here is what I keep thinking over and over again.
The obvious 9.05 x 5 Marner should have got, which has been proven over and over again with many comparables (Kanes 2nd deal as the best comp) should have had him sitting at:
9.05 x 1.06 = 9.6 mil over 6 years.
He decided to take 13.5% over his actual value.
Here is what he took stretched out over 8 years:
10.893 x .06 = .65358
10.893m + 2 years x .65358 = 12.2 mil on an 8 year term and 14.97%
Connor Mcdavid signed for 15.33% of the cap over 8 years (inflated to 12.8 mil this season)

So imagine right now Connor Mcdavid signed for 12.8 mil and Marner signed for 12.2 on the same day.
Think about that, the best player on the entire planet is only making 4-5% more cap hit than Mitch Marner
I am very happy this is over with, but this contract is gross for leaf fans, there is no denying it. Connor Mcdavid took a decent cap number to play in gas can Oil country, and Mitch Marner squeezed every penny out of the Leafs, his home town team to the point it sickens me.</div></div>

Player/agent greed aside, an overpay was probably necessary in Mitch's case. How many other teams were rumoured to be looking at offer sheets in excess of what he ended up signing for? An argument could be made that the Leafs came away with a bit of a lighter contract than they could have. Still an overpay regardless, but at least we're no longer looking at 2.5M for a slow 4th liner, amirite?
