Matthews would have cost more with more term, Marner should have gotten another 2 years I'll give you that. Nylander is a terrific contract. And literally every other contract Dubas has done has been team friendly.</div></div>
Nylander's contract is great, I don't understand the Leafs fans complaining about it or about him. I'm not talking about the stars when I say management has an issue with term though. Stars will get what they want. But look at middling players like Johnsson, Kapanen, and Kerfoot. That's three guys combining for 1/8th of your cap and each locked in for 3-4 years. Not good plays. Should be less money for that term, or shorter term for that money. Now all three are tied down and at least one has to be shipped out to stay under the 81.5M for the next three years.

Term SHOULD be way less, I agree. But this management isn't known for giving term that's ideal.

It was a TSN analyst (sorry, can't remember who) speaking during the trade deadline if I remember correctly. It was never a big article or anything, but it was mentioned on air that the two teams had tried to work on something in January, and that was the end result.

There was a deal involving Hamilton that Canes/Leafs were working on last year, but it fell apart because Leafs wanted Foegele and Canes wouldn't budge on him. Nice idea, but it won't happen.

Weakness fixed
Leafs fans are hilarious. Andersen goes 1.84/.936 and he's the cause of the problem? Same thing with Nylander, he's 4M cheaper and produced the same as Marner. Take a step back, breathe a little, and let an curtain of honesty reveal itself before your armchair ruins your team.

Had this started over a week ago but never finished. Can't delete or undo a signing. Buried him in the AHL so it made no impact on cap.

Final thoughts on contract
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>Demanding a player take less because you like the team is greedier than negotiating your own worth</div></div>
There is no such thing as "worth" that totals millions/yr. Literally every contract is unnecessary. But on top of that, to demand numbers that could up-end the structure of your team is entirely selfish and based only a greed-built ego. Especially when those demands are being made by a surrogate (agent) and will result in earning more in one year than some teammates will in their lifetimes.

Final thoughts on contract
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jangle29</b></div><div>After taking many contracts, comparables and rumored offers over the cap era it seems like 6% is an average amount of cash that eats up UFA years when signing.
If you use that logic, and apply the cap% of this deal, here is what I keep thinking over and over again.
The obvious 9.05 x 5 Marner should have got, which has been proven over and over again with many comparables (Kanes 2nd deal as the best comp) should have had him sitting at:
9.05 x 1.06 = 9.6 mil over 6 years.
He decided to take 13.5% over his actual value.
Here is what he took stretched out over 8 years:
10.893 x .06 = .65358
10.893m + 2 years x .65358 = 12.2 mil on an 8 year term and 14.97%
Connor Mcdavid signed for 15.33% of the cap over 8 years (inflated to 12.8 mil this season)
-
So imagine right now Connor Mcdavid signed for 12.8 mil and Marner signed for 12.2 on the same day.
Think about that, the best player on the entire planet is only making 4-5% more cap hit than Mitch Marner
I am very happy this is over with, but this contract is gross for leaf fans, there is no denying it. Connor Mcdavid took a decent cap number to play in gas can Oil country, and Mitch Marner squeezed every penny out of the Leafs, his home town team to the point it sickens me.</div></div>
Player/agent greed aside, an overpay was probably necessary in Mitch's case. How many other teams were rumoured to be looking at offer sheets in excess of what he ended up signing for? An argument could be made that the Leafs came away with a bit of a lighter contract than they could have. Still an overpay regardless, but at least we're no longer looking at 2.5M for a slow 4th liner, amirite?

Marner and Gardiner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>Combine they make 3 million and they'll miss 1/3 of the season on the IR, so when I make an ACGM I usually place only Dermott with the LTIR boys to showcase the extra cap relief they'll receive (roughly 1 million).
So to bring in Gards and Marner, Mitch would have to sign a bridge deal, 2 years x 8 million and Gards would have to sign a 1 yr 4.5 million deal.</div></div>
For IR vs LTIR, you could both be right. But if they're looking at the possibility of signing both Marner and Gardiner, you do what you need to now and make other moves later to adapt as guys become available. Don't forget the intentional overpay on Marner, which realistically could be a lot lower and make the cap shuffle easier.

Agreed on Marner. Gardiner's is listed as "team-friendly" in the explanation because it's definitely well below his value. I've just always had a suspicion that he could partly be holding out to see if he can land in Toronto for one season.
