Crowded Backend What Happens
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tgasp67</b></div><div>I think Smith makes the team and the Vatanen signing pushes Kulikov to the 7th D and Carrick to the taxi squad. I'm moreso concerned with what happens to the powerplay. Vatanen is only really that good on the PP but Butcher, Smith, PK and Severson were the ones that I thought would be in those spots since it seems Lindy is running 2 defenseman on the PP. Maybe the Devils signed him bc one is being moved (possibly in a Laine deal) but I don't know if they have the appetite for what that would cost.</div></div>
Interesting outlook. I’d love Laine on nah, but not sure it would truly be worth the asking price

Crowded Backend What Happens

Smith def makes the team this year. Which I would think makes Butcher expendable. Just don’t know who or what the return would be, or package.

You lost the season with hiring Laviolette. He’s a defensive minded coach whose numbers show that he’s deterred the offensive production of elite talent on teams he’s had. If you want the most out of Hughes, Hischier, Palms, Bratt etc. (as we’ve drafted and built this team on speed and skill) Laviolette is not your man.

I think Puj would sign for 1.2 x 2. I just upped it because I could. As for Raymond and Askarov, Raymond could MAYBE make a push for a roster spot. At least the 9 games to start the season seeing how he steps up given all the youth NJ seems to inserting into their system. Will be interesting to see

Moves
Def depends where that ARI pick falls. If it sits at 10 or even 13-14th overall, NJ should keep that pick - given how talented this draft class is. If you want to improve the top 6, take a flyer on Gal or Gran for a year/two deal. They had bad season so I’m sure you can sign them to a “prove it “ deal just for 1 year and see where that plays out. If they excel, flip them at TDL for more assets. (If NJ isn’t in a playoff spot at that point in time)

I think that could get it done as is. Maybe try to fit Mueller in there as his contract is up as well. An RFA I believe as well but is only due a cheap cheap amount TBL could afford for D depth

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cperk92</b></div><div>This may be unpopular, but I think the best case scenario for us would be Vancouver losing to Minnesota and the pick deferring to next year, where the pick will be somewhere between 12-20, rather than it potentially being in the 20s this year.</div></div>
I’ve thought about that. And I’m not completely against it. If, however, we did end up with 3 firsts this year - would we somehow package that Van pick with a player like wood, Zacha, or McLeod to either move up or get a player from a cap strapped team?

I agree a lot is uncertain this year. But I’m pretty sure the top 3 is a lock with Laf- By - Stut. Seeding 4-10 is completely wide open after that. Any team can make a huge jump in the draft when the order is selected. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out

Hypothetically, if the Leafs lost to Columbus in the play-in, but won the 3rd overall pick in the 2020 draft, do you think the Devils would trade their three 1st rounders for the 3rd overall pick, who I am assuming would be Lucas Raymond?</div></div>
For starters, Lucas Raymond isn’t going 3rd overall.

As for $ and term, I just guessed. I can’t see NJ signing an over 26 player long term. Gal and Gran - they’d be a low risk, high reward signing if so. Cheap, 1 year (prove yourself) deal

Zadorov is an RFA. Devils would own his rights to resign him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChytilMania</b></div><div>Palmieri is one of the best shooters in the league. Any team could use a player of his caliber. Bump up your demands.</div></div>
I agree.. BUT to stay relevant and able to compete to wins some games (not do what Detroit is doing this year), I feel that the return for Palms should include an NHL ready player. Someone in the age group that fits with Hughes and Nico. Given the Devils need on D, I targeted Zadorov, who is young and his next contract wont be absurd. His grit and size greatly help NJ immediately on the back end along with another 1st round pick.... I feel that NJ should ask for Byram straight up but I know that wont happen... so Fitz counters with a 2020 first and Timmins, ultimately ending with Sakic saying 2021 1st and Zadorov.

Nico hangs with Bratt and Zacha. Mueller being on the team now has 0 impact on Hischier

I'd dropped the 2nd and add from our side to get Lilj, probably becomes Dermott in the end. Tor will hate it, but thats ok. If they have another 1 yr cap dump we should take it.
I see you amended the Minny trade, interesting you kept our 2021, probably the right move as Van first may be a good one. It is conditional though, if they don't make the POs they keep it. So the 1st you're giving Minny should be too! I think Simmonds get a third this yr. I'd keep Woody, but move Sami for a first from Car. I like Palms, gotta keep one vet no?</div></div>
I agree for the most part with valid points you provided. I guess I really only did this post to see what some returns could actually look like given now that we see what Coleman gave us. Id like to keep Palmieri and agree we need Vet presence, and he may be in line to become our next C, but if the return is too great I cant see Fitz turning it down. A big part of the draft this year will be if Van makes the playoffs. That 3rd extra first round pick this year instead of next can be a complete game changer.

If NJ can get another 1st round pick this year, I can see them flipping 2 1st's this year for a significant player. Whether that's moving up in the draft or trading for that piece. Coleman set the market high with that trade. I wasn't on board for trading Palmieri but now seeing what a possible return could be.. I cant help but get excited to see what if
