Thread: W Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>I wouldn't. Hakanpaa is a big guy, but his defensive metrics via NST are barely better than Barrie's despite playing a 3rd pairing role. He was 5th on the Stars for TOI v Elites and posted a horrible -7.80 DFF%Rel in those minutes. Barrie was 4th for the Oilers for TOI v Elites and posted a much more respectable -1.60 DFF%Rel.

Nevermind that he's a black hole offensively - his offensive metrics are terrible.

He hits a lot and Barrie doesn't, but if that's what you're after honestly I think Desharnais or Niemelainen could do just about as well for half the cost (and no assets wasted).</div></div>
I don't put as much stock into Woodguy's numbers as you do.

I think the role he would play would facilitate better deployment opportunities for the other two pairings while also affording the incoming rookies a better position in which to grow. With Barrie and Bouchard each being on their own pair, that left all the primary defensive responsibilities on Nurse-Ceci and this will be even more true if either Barrie or Bouchard are paired with a rookie next year. Replacing Barrie with Hakanpaa gives the 3rd pair the skillset to take on a greater share of the defensive burden than one with Barrie would and provides a form of defensive cover to the incoming rookies that Barrie simply can't.

Desharnais isn't a particularly physical defender despite his size so he wouldn't replicate Hakanpaa's skillset.

Lastly, while Barrie has value and should return an asset in a normal market environment, I think this offseason is showing itself to be very abnormal- particularly when it comes to cap saving moves. If this team wants to free up space by moving either Foegele or Barrie in order to buffer the bottom-6 some more (or to re-sign all the RFAs), then I think they're going to be giving up assets to do so. As such, I see this kind of deal as palatable (4th to take on Barrie's 4.5mil, 3rd for Hakanpaa).

However, I don't think DAL are going to be amenable to this given their own cap and RFA situation.
