New York Islanders signed Matt Martin (4 Years / $1,500,000 AAV)
Once again, the CapFriendly poll conundrum: when answering "Was this a good signing?", are we supposed to answer from the team's perspective or the player's?
This was a great signing from Martin's PoV. From the Islanders', and their fans, not so much.

Lou is such an interesting gm. He can negotiate with kids like a champ... but seasoned vets he has some real doozies.
If he was still a leaf he would have got Matthews for 10 and Marner for 8. But then signed Tavares for 13...

When Lou was with Leafs gave this guy a 4 year 2.5mill a year deal overpaying him, now with Islanders he repeats himself but this time at a mill less. This is all I can think of to this signing

Honestly, if this was one year, I might not mind it so much, since that fourth line is dynamite. But FOUR years? He'll be 35 by the end of this. It's debatable if he'll even have an NHL job by year two or three.

If there was no salary cap, this would be fine, and you'd love to see guys like this get paid. But there unfortunately is a salary cap, and that makes this an oof signing

This is an incredible contract!
Early estimates were around 5 1/2-6 M.
Marino was in the 90th percentile in EV defence this year and I think he has more offence to give!
He’s amazing!
Thanks, Edmonton!!!

I mean. Zaitsev's rookie season was replacement level 5v5 and was propped up by PP usage. Marino in the other hand has been stellar at 5v5 (and significantly better than Z even in his best season).
While regression is very possible here, he has a long ways to go before this looks like a bad contract. I like the bet.

The analytics never were that favorable to Zaitsev even during his rookie season. It's quite a different picture with Marino, who actually played like a true top-pairing guy at times this past season. This is way more like Slavin/Pesce than Zaitsev.
