Sabres also received the STL 2021 2nd and (along with their 2022 5th) traded it for Colin Miller. Just being pedantic, but it might be the best part of the return, depending on Johnson's development.

Even if they just waited one more day to pay RORs $7mill bonus this deal could’ve been much better for buffalo. But Pegula took the penny pinching route and forced Botts to make his move

Miller's production was down because he was being scratched in favour of guy's like Bogosian and Scandella early on in the season. When he was playing he was often on the 3rd pairing and getting the least amount of ice time, no PP time etc. Hard to produce when you don't get good opportunities. He showed his talent in the last 25 games, was our best D over that time

Yep he is a highly underrated defenseman, that’s for sure. Dubas wishes that he traded for him instead.

Miller’s fallen out of favour with the Buffalo coaching staff but when he’s played, he’s shown promising signs. Looking at his stats, he is actually way better defensively than Tyson Barrie. Perhaps Dubas should’ve given up less to acquire him instead, or trade Kadri to get Manson.

Miller has more value than that. We aren't trading Johansson. You would have enough cap space to keep him if that Dallas trade didn't happen. That 3rd line would get killed, none of those players have experience, only Cozens is NHL ready

Stutzle is not as good as Byfield and is the same position. So you get better player and you dont draft Raymond second. There is no such thing as too much centers.

Got to disagree with this. You can never have enough C’s, Byfield is the 2nd best prospect in the draft and you should always draft the BPA especially in the 1st rd. Also, Cozens isn’t a lock as C (unless I’m mistaken Cozens played wing with Krebs at the WJC) and a future line with Byfield and Cozens offers a lot of speed and size.

Can a team have too many young centers?? A year ago Mittelstadt was the 2C for years to come.
How difficult is it to switch from C to a W???

I would humbly suggest an Okposo buyout doesnt make sense this offseason.
Especially with 10 million in cap space. You are only saving 2 million and he actually has reinvented himself into a useful depth forward. just dont resign vesey, who probably wont resign and its only a 1.5 million difference in cap this year
buyout before July 1 this year leaves cap hits of 4 million, 5 million, 3 million, 1 million, 1 million, 1 million through 2025-26
buyout before july 1 next year leaves cap hits of 5 million, 3 million, 1 million, 1 million through 2024-25

Trading Okposo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cjp2112</b></div><div>Not viewing Ryan and Okposo as a net zero. Buffalo benefits a bit more getting out from under that third year and pentially freeing up more cap space with a buyout in the last year of Ryan's contract. I see that as added value for Buffalo.
But yeah, Botterill probably isn't trading Mittelstadt but hopwfully Botts isn't making the calls (though now with the current uncertainty he almost definitely is). Who do you put in place of Mittelstadt? Can't just pull him out and I doubt Botterill trades Thompson either (same basic reason). Maybe Asplund but not sure how much value he has in the league. I went with the overpay from the Buffalo perspective.</div></div>
Even if he hadn’t drafted Mitts with his first ever pick,
and even though Mitts development has been slow,
my biggest problem is that u just don’t trade a 21year old with a 2C ceiling when the major piece in the return is a 3C
If he were gonna move Mitts,
it would have to be in Nylander for Jokiharju type deal...
for a young player with a high ceiling
Your logic behind the Okposo for Ryan deal is creative,
and really does make a lot of sense financially for the Sens
I think it’s pretty close to a wash
So what is Tierney worth?
I’d say a player like Tage, or Asplund is about right
A younger cost controlled player with middle6 upside should be what they’d look for to replace Tierney
And maybe we’d add a mid round pick instead of getting a 2nd
Tough to say
I’d rather aim higher though & try to either get a 2C,
or at least a better 3C than Tierney (I’m not a big fan)
I’m comfortable letting Cozens & Mitts battle it out for the 3C spot
And if neither look ready,
I’m fine with Johansson or trying Kahun there
Bringing back Larsson is also a no brainer, Girgs too
They were very effective defensively taking in other teams top scorers
Idk why we wouldn’t want them back??

Personally I dont think that's a good contract for any team to be giving out. Hes on the wrong side of 30 and hes already declining. If the sabres were a win now team and expected to only get 2 or 3 more shots at the playoffs before they have to rebuild then they should do it but they arent there at all. They've got lots of young talent

If you're going to bring in someone to play 2C for only one year, why not try Derek Stepan from Arizona? He has more than twice the cap hit of Ryan, but he's probably got a better year in him and the Coyotes would probably be glad to move him -- he might cost you only Johansson. You've got room under the cap and you get to keep Pilut (assuming you can shuffle off Hutton).
P.S. {edit} But those figures for Olofsson and Kahun may be optimistic.

Stepan has value. I think we are looking at adding the 2nd, not them. Probably add Asplund too.
That 2nd pairing will get us killed. Again. Forward group looks good, but there isn't going to be a CBO.
Also, Girgensons isn't taking a pay cut after this past season.
