Of course Pettersson is worth more than that. But teams know the Pens have cap issues this summer and something has to give.

I think you're right that Carter and Zucker bring that element, maybe even Boyle too.</div></div>
I like Boyle as the #12, but I don't think that there is much left in that tank. Not sure he would actually play much next year, therefore there is a need to keep that aspect brought by Carter and Zucker.

Carter for Wood
The Pens aren't going to trade Carter (short of major return) as he is one of the only actual leaders on the team (Crosby's lead by example doesn't work in reality). It is also why I don't think that they actually tried to trade Zucker either.
Marino, Kapanen, 3rd for 1st
That is basically troll level trade suggestion.

Teams are not going to just give the Pens an out. They are stuck with a majority of these contracts and will likely need to start rebuilding. That is the way of the salary cap era. I don’t see them having money for both Malkin and Letang, and I don’t see a way to get young outside of trading players like Guentzel.

These suggestions don't seem THAT clueless.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>Because they aren’t and that person is the clueless one. All we know is Malkin has stated he would accept a pay cut but how much of a cut is completely up in the air. Letang’s position has been that he’s been underpaid so the idea of him not signing for at least 8 million aav is beyond dumb. Rust will sign a long term deal. He’s almost 29 and he will be signing the most important contract of his career, whether that’s with us or elsewhere.</div></div>
Here u go. Google my man..!!
Geno has said 100 different interviews. He wants to sign 2-3 more years and then go and play and retire in Russia. Said he’s willing to take a hometown and he’s not worried about money, he’s a very rich man.
Sid has said 100 different interviews. That he took a hometown discount and for it to work, everyone has to take alittle less. He says it in his spitting chicklet’s interview even; when they ask about Geno extension.
Geno-"I'm not thinking about my contract right now," Malkin said Dec. 29. "I'm not thinking about money. I'm a pretty rich guy. ... This is my point, I have had a tough half of the year. I want to be back at my level of my game.
https://www.nhl.com/news/kris-letang-evgeni-malkin-and-bryan-rust-contracts-a-top-priority-says-penguins-gm-ron-hextall/c-330246758
Letang has said “he thinks he can play forever”. He wants 5 yrs at 7M per according to “his representation”. Hextall/Burke don’t want to go 5 years. They want 2-3 year extension. They are far apart on the term. Not the AVV.
“Seravalli reports that there are “big gaps” between the team and the player, with the major sticking point being the term on Letang’s next contract. According to Seravalli’s sources, Letang’s representation is seeking a five-year deal with an average annual value beginning at $7M, and the Penguins are “simply not willing” to even consider Letang on an extension that takes him to the point where he is nearing 40 years old. Letang is currently 34 and will be 35 by the time next season starts, meaning any extension for him carries a significant risk of becoming an albatross, despite how good he still is at the NHL level. For a Penguins team that is navigating which direction to go as a franchise long-term, it is understandable for their relatively new management team of Brian Burke and Ron Hextall to be wary of signing Letang to such a massive extension.”
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nhl/report-kris-letang-penguins-have-big-gaps-in-negotiations-for-next-contract/ar-AAUTWJp
Letang-I’d say they settle 4 years @ 7.5M per. That’s pretty far from your 8.5M AVV and “his representation” saying they want 5 years @7M per.
Geno-will sign 2-3 season and then go and retire in Russia; like he’s always said. I’d say @ 7M-8M per. Probably 3 years @7.75m. Sid is signed for 8.7M.
Rust-will sign a 5-6 year deal @ 6M-6.5M per(30M-39M) deal. I’d say 6 years @6.25M(37.5M total contract, a huge NHL deal). Guentzel is signed a 6M per. Hyman signed 7 years @ 5.5Mper(38.5M total).

Penguins keep 58 71 and 17
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>doublem24</b></div><div>I see your point and also see how the the end of the deal will most likely look like nonsense.
My thought process is - Rust gives them the best chance to win a cup in the next three years. I don't know how they extend the winning window much further past that no matter how you cut it. I think a 6 x 6 deal is a general baseline for what he'll get. You're right though, it's not unreasonable to suggest he'll want a 7th year.
Also, what are the alternatives for next year if not Rust? (I'm literally asking, not trolling) It feels like they should go with the devil they know in Rust, instead of bringing someone in to see how they fit.
Maybe a better question is - what does Dumo's next contract look like? Because he'll essentially be in the same position as Rust, around 30 years old looking for a pay day.</div></div>
I have no idea what they do with RW next year. there are options, but truth is, Hextall has found steals in production. Heinen, McGinn.
So I'm not surprised if he goes out the box there.
Dumo is even worse than Rust. He'll be 32 going into that deal. But at least at 32 he knows no one is going to sign him to 39.
It could be they let him walk. Really hard to replace a 1LD. But they may go MP, Matheson, POJ on the LD.
Because Dumo is probably getting paid in the 6-7 range.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>doublem24</b></div><div>I think they can keep the most valuable pieces of this roster together, starting this offseason with Malkin, Rust and Letang.
Trying to find a player like Rust on the open market is going to cost more than whatever he asks for this season. Who cares if he has negative value at the end of his deal? That's just the way it is.
I do think it's important to consider Jarry, Dumo and Blueger the following seasons - but I don't think they're positioned nearly as well unless they get Malkin, Rust and Letang resigned.
Having said that, I think Malkin is the main factor on positively positioning the team to stay together over the coming years. I don't expect a massive discount from him, but even a 1M to 2M difference in cap hit could retain Dumo.
Anyway, lots of conjecture - the point is they have to succeed in roster construction this year before you can project their team the following season - and that starts with Malkin, Letang and Rust.</div></div>
eh, a 1LD is more important than a RW.
Teams build down the middle.
I don't think your take here is really solid.
Fact is Rust is gonna get 7 years. Just like Hyman who was 1 year younger did.
You can say the extra years don't matter, but come on. Especially on a guy who's injured a lot.
I like Rusty he's a good player but when the deal comes at 6x7, they should move on.

I really don't see Hextall feeling the need to do too much. Back-up goalie is probably the main priority if he does anything at all. I think Travis Boyd would be a sneaky good move. Only other thing would be to trade Kapanen - maybe Zucker.</div></div> We may all be surprised at what Anderson will return.
He has a 6-4 record, a 3rd period 0.943 SV% and a 0.925 SH SV%.
Let's remember he was 2-0 for WAS in the 2021 play offs.
He has great life time resume, so this years performance is not an anomaly.
Karmanos knows how to win his trades (Subban, Boychuk and Butcher for future considerations, Tuch for Eichel, Levi for Reinhart, 1st for Ristolainen).
IMO he will get more than DeSmith and 2022 4th round pick (PIT)
Well that is my penny and a half.
BTW, if I were the Sabre GM both Zucker and Kapanen would interest me.
Obviously not for Craig, but as a conversation starter.

Malkin will take a discount from his current contract of 9.5 Million. Matters what a discount is in his mind 2 Million? 3 Million? 4 Million? who knows. Rust could probably get 7+ on the open market so Pens will be lucky for under 6.5 (may have to give him 7 or 8 years to bring down his number). Rust I can't see taking a discount just because dudes never been paid, and has been underpaid the last few years. Letang apparently wants like 9 to 9.5 like the rest of the #1 dman so who knows. Either way it will be tight.

7 Million per season is a lot, especially over a 3 year span - that's not even considering his recent injury history.
I'd imagine him doing a deal in the 16M to 18M dollar range - probably over a three year span. That has his cap hit in the 5.33M to 6M range.
Final thought - as of today, Malkin has the 6th highest career earnings in league history. A 16M deal would move him into 4th. All that to say, I think he already made all the money he needs. He may just want to finish his career in Pittsburgh.</div></div>
agreed on the last point but i dont think you realize how good malkin still is.... he still is in the top 10 C in the league (when healthy i get that injuries are a bit of a concern) and in a game 7 situation he can still be the best player on the ice no matter who he faces.
i still think you are right that 6mil would be ideal but ovi got PAID and geno is better so we will see what he decides to do
