This doesn't walk him straight to UFA. It buys out 3 UFA seasons.

Penguins Now
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jasondomitrovic</b></div><div>I took out the Madison Bowney RFA and left the rest. Detroit has ALL the cap space in the world and they get a veteran D guy to help with their young defensemen as they develop so JJ's cap is not that big of an issue for the next three years as they will still suck. As for Detroit they get their #1 goalie under contract for multiple years plus they get TWO proven super solid forwards who play that 200 foot game in ZAR and Simon and they don't have too pay much for them. It gives them the defensive side of the puck help they need and it's young in age. That is my thought process.</div></div>
Wings will be bad so that pick will probably be in the top 4, even if 2021 draft is light, that puck will a very good cost controlled player for years. Also Wings may have cap space but why would they take on a dump, JJ, a goalie who has not played well behind a better team and 2 forwards who who may be good 200 foot hockey players, but are not top 6 forwards?
You essentially dumped your bad defenseman, your goalie problem and 2 bottom 6 forwards on us for a chance to draft 1st overall.
JJ, has zero chance of being a leader as he is not the top 3 d man on the team. Wings would rather use cap space to take on bad contracts and Recieve not trade away draft picks.
I know you will say Murray is Stanley cup goalie, but he has not looked like that the past two years. Also he is a RFA with arbitration rights, and get a 1 year dela and walk next year. Not a good trade for. Rebuilding team

(TOR/PIT) - Kapanen, Åberg, Lindgren for 2020 1st, Rodrigues, Hållander, Warsofsky
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>doublem24</b></div><div>The more I think about this trade the more it stands out as a clear Toronto win, but if I look it as a two year plan for Pittsburgh, I can see how JR rationalized it.
To be clear, this is essentially like polishing a turd, but if you look at Pittsburgh's contracts, they have a strong group put together for at least 2 more years. It's not necessarily the best way to build a championship team with a 10 year window, but it feels like ownership is seeing it through with JR. As a Pens fan I hope it works, because if they don't get a deep run out of the next two years they've given up WAY too much. Their revenue will drop and they won't spend to the cap.
If the next two years go sideways I don't expect Malkin to be incentivized to resign and to me, that's the first concrete mark of the end of the era. What's happening now is just the beginning.</div></div>
in a vacuum, I get Pittsburgh's thinking about this trade... but I don't get that they chose Kapanen as the target. If they went after a rock solid top 6 winger instead of a potential top 6 winger, it would make sense.

Throwing stuff at the wall see what sticks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Yojimbo</b></div><div>Fleury is a backup now. He was already slipping and is going to be 36 next year. The Pens are not a stronger team after your trades.
A team that is in need of leadership would take Hornqvist. Both Detroit and Ottawa would instantly make him captain. No need to retain or "pay" to move him. He should net a 3rd.
Bjugstad is a good player if healthy. If he is healed up he should also get a 3rd, no retention. If not healed then he is LTIR and not relevant. There have also been a lot of Bjugstad for Russell Edm AGMs. (same cap but $3M salary savings)
Murray should be able to net Bennett, 3rd easily, probably even a 2nd.
No need for the second going from the Pens to Calgary.
McCann could pull a 2nd.
The Penguins do not want/need Rittich nor Fleury. They can go with Jarry and DeSmith next season, and if that doesn't work, get a goalie at that time. Maybe UFA the following season. Getting Rittich or Fleury would also mean that DeSmith would need to be waived again, and he probably gets picked up this time. So your deals also cost the Pens DeSmith.
So your deals are:
Bennett, Fleury ($2M ret) for Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist ($2M ret), Bjugstad ($1M ret), 2nd, DeSmith
Legitimate deals would be:
Bennett, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd for Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist, Bjugstad (plus no $7M retention, no -2nd to Calgary)</div></div>
Did you forget the fact that Horny has a NTC, I would say that Detroit and Ottawa are definitely out of the question. Plus even if Ottawa wasn't on his 8 team no trade list, Melnyk would not want to be paying that much for a player that isn't going to make a huge difference to the team.
Murray is going to get a 2nd or a player (Puljujarvi) tops. He is not going to be enough for Calgary to move there most effective playoff forward and a pick included. Just try offering that on HFboards and you'll get skewered for it. Trust me on this as Bennett for Murray has been suggested and Flames fans hate even that.
The only way DeSmith gets picked up is if for some reason a team didn't sign one of the numerous UFA goalies that will be on the market. Teams don't make a habit of claiming a back up goalie unless they have no other option. There are many other, better options that will be on the market for goalies.
Anyways, its fine, you don't like what I offered, however you are way over ranking Bjugstad and Murray and way under rating what Bennett will cost. You are also way undervaluing Fleury, but that has been his MO his entire career.
Again this was throwing stuff out there, to see what the potential is. Can't wait to see what you throw against the wall...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>doublem24</b></div><div>So what would it take to move him in this trade?</div></div>
The cap relief with pending Svechnikov and Hamilton extensions provides enough motive, so you just need to get the value right. I don't know what that would be because Staal's value is SO difficult to judge

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>doublem24</b></div><div>Agreed, I think he's a massive improvement and would be one of the best 3C's in the league if Pitt got him back.
Lastly, in response to another comment, I know JR has said Pitt is trying to get younger and Staal doesn't fit that idea, but the main goal is to win a cup and it looks like the next two years is the last chances to do that with this core. I think Staal increases their chances to do so.</div></div>
Staal is already probably the best 3C in hockey. He is Carolina's 3C.

Bjugstad is not more physical than the best defensive center in the Metro not named Sean Couturier (this is probably an exaggeration, but he's still DAMN good) and although Staal doesn't bring as much production, his game leads to a lot of chances. Someone like Kapanen on his wing would go absolutely nuts.

Not saying Murray has a lower upside, but based on last season, I have more confidence in both Peter Mrazek and James Reimer than I have in Murray.
Trading with Carolina is difficult right now. They have one of the deepest teams in the league and a lot of average players would just struggle to actually make the lineup

Carolina have enough prospect D men to successfully ice a better AHL defence than the Maple Leafs can ice in the NHL. Bjugstad is very meh, Murray isn't exactly a great improvement on what Carolina have (Reimer was a wall this year)

Just because you don't like the facts doesn't make them stupid. He is an excellent 3C, but doesn't score enough to be a 2C. Scoring on the PP is part of that.
In fact, he's a 3C on Montreal, having been passed by two rookies.
He can pass as a 2C, but as I said Jet fans complained that Little didn't score enough, imagine how much they'd complain with a 2C that scored even less.
