Thread: Marner Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ansabch12</b></div><div>Dude the value isn’t the issue in the trade the problem is that Marner makes no sense for the Flames.

You get him for one year and then he immediately demands 12 mil which for a rebuilding team is beyond stupid considering we already have Huberdeau long term.

I don’t understand why you guys can’t see that there is no fit for him on a non-competitive team, not to mention giving away one of our two viable NHL caliber dmen to bring in another extremely overpaid winger is not a recipe for success.

Unless the Flames are getting Marner for free it isn’t worth it for us, it doesn’t matter how much regular season success he has.</div></div>

Appreciate your opinion. From a (true) fit perspective, I can't comment as a Habs fan.
As long as value is fair (within reason), I think that is most important for me when creating ACGMs. (Everyone's goal on here is different ofc.)

All I can say is that the Flames are way further along a rebuild in terms of the pieces they have, compared to the Habs.
(And as a Habs fans, we don't really want to see the Flames succeed, because your 2025 first *infinite conditions belongs to us.)
That said I still want to see the Stanley Cup back in Canada ASAP, regardless of which Canadian team winning it.

If you want younger talent you can move guys like Kuzmenko and Sharangovich around, to gain more assets, but Marner is a once in a life-time acquisition. Would have loved to see Marner on the Habs second line, although that will likely never happen lol.

You will have 90million in cap in the 2025-2026 season. Who else do you want to spend that money on? (Having one super talented player take up 14% of the cap is not terrible)
And surrounding the playoffs, you know that this is purely mental. Marner on a line with Kadri, not playing in his hometown, playing with flow, is something I would not want to face. Scary thought! I am glad y'all are in the western conference.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>I dont think 11mil expiring UFA, coming off his worst year and even worse showing in playoffs carries that value.

And same for Liljegren who enters his 7th pro season as still just a 3rd pairing guy, on a team so depserate for defenders that annually they go out at the trade deadline and acquire two defensive starters, and then is a healthy scratch in playoffs two years running? (and you've given him 4.8mil?)

Marner for Markstrom and Mangiapane (50%) retained is probably closer</div></div>

If 69 games and 85 points is Marner's worst season, then I am scared to see when he is on fire, with the flames, pun intended.
Marner needs to play away from home, needs a mental reset, and a fresh start.

Liljegren, is a good player, but the Maple Leafs keep switching his D-pair around, like a merry-go-round, moving him up and down the lineup. How is this man suppose to settle in with so much instability? (And he does not fit as well into Toronto's d-scheme, compared to what management think they want, eg. very physical.) Over the last three seasons Liljegren has played 183 games, playing less due to being a healthy scratch. During those 183 games he has 64 points, a 0.35ppg average for a defensemen. Much better than Rasmus Sandin (an LD), who fetched a first, and afterwards signed for 5 years at 4.6m.
Which RD comes into the league and has played 7 pro seasons by the time he is 25? No one. Most defenseman start in the NHL after playing 2-3 years in the minors or overseas. Liljegren has 3 "full" (60 game) seasons under his belt. Give him a break, and blame the coaching staff for this mess. Expecting players to succeed with so little patience, is a hallmark for continuous first round exits.

If the Leafs lose later today, the first thing they need to do is fire Sheldon Keefe, (and break up the core four). I believe Marner is the odd man out.
