<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Marco, I disagree. The Isles were are in playoff run aren't going to allow Tavares to negotiate with another NHL team. And what happens if there is no deal, then Tavares has to remain an Islander. Imagine the feelings on both sides. Now Tavares knows what he is going to be offered in the off season. I really think folks are so caught in the "sign and trade" deals in basketball they think they happen in the NHL.(which is almost exclusively happen in the offseason) It's almost an exclusive Isle/Hab Tavares trade scenario on this site.</div></div>

Well it really depends on where this AGM is in time. right now, yeah you may be right but I mean if this is getting closer to the TDL than yeah I don't see an issue. Also, any AGM involving Tavares being traded, is doing so with the presumption that the Isles are not in the playoff picture. We as readers have to kind of assume that.

The Isles can try all they want but they may still be a bubble team at best and by March that is a position they have to consider that maybe moving JT and blowing up this year is better then maybe making the playoffs.

What happens if there is no deal? Why wouldn't there be? Habs would offer JT everything he wants in terms of $$ and term. A team capable of competing for a cup. It would be up to JT at that point and if he knows ahead of time that he wouldn't want to play for the Habs, then there woulnd't be any more point in negotiating. Nothing gained, nothing lost. The Isles are either accepting trade offers or they aren't. Once they have come to that decision, they already know they aren't landing JT in free agency. He's as good as gone so moving him would be in there best interest.

Sign and trades don't necessarily mean the player signs a deal before being traded. It could mean that a deal is all but agreed upon with some final details still needing to be worked out later on. Once JT is happy with the bulk of the negotiations, the rest can be filled out later. It might as well be good as done. It's a risk but at that point a Gm knows when things are pretty much done. Any back out at that point would be extremely unprofessional for the player and his agent.
