As a Jets fan I have a hard time justifying Scheifele for Eichel straight up when you consider their production and contracts.

Scheif is older but he's gone point per game or better for the last 4 years and currently has 28 points in 21 games this year. He's on a $6.1M cap hit for 4 years still. He's on one of the best value contracts in the entire NHL.

Eichel is younger and under team control for longer but at an extra $4M per year caphit. He's also hovered around a point per game over the last 4 years and has 14 points in 17 games this year. So your offensive production is the same but you pay way more for it? Eichel hasn't been able to create a winning culture there.

Then we also toss in our top pair LD who is under contract long term and is projected to be a dman on Team Canada's Olympic team next year.

This Jets fan just doesn't see the appeal in this trade at all. We add a slightly better player under a way worse contract at 1C, then we downgrade on D from JMo to McCabe. Give up a former 1st round pick that is just now NHL ready as well and move up a round in the draft. Trading away 2 of our assistant captains in one trade is just too much.</div></div>

Schiefele has been far from good defensively for a few years, and Morrissey desperately needs a better partner to reach what he was. He can still be fine, but he's more likely to get than in Buffalo with Miller or Dahlin (where their playstyles match up better with Morrissey than Beaulieu and Poolman) while McCabe has shown prior he can drag what are essentially carcasses out on the ice to above-board xG rates.

Also, the trade in total *does* actually save the Jets about a few 100k in cap.
