I wasn't a big fan of the Trouba trade - gave away the 1st rd pick they got from WPG for Kevin Hayes and a solid RD who fits the current style of mobile 2 way D with decent offense for a player who got awarded way too much money in arbitration for a couple of decent offensive years And I won't lie - was excited about the Panarin signing. After the team started the rebuild this was a shot in the arm the org needed. As much as I hate to bring this up, both of their deals look real bad now but keep in mind they were signed under the notion the cap would be going up at least 2 to 3 mil a year (year to year avg cap increase starting with 14-15 to the 19-20 season was 2.83 million a year ). There is no way anyone was predicting 2 years with no increase and a 3rd with an increase of 1 mil. Their deals wouldn't be as prohibitive if the cap was $90 mil this year.

If anything, I would be critical of Chris Drury.

Agree the Rangers shouldn't have traded Buch - should have kept him for the year and dealt his rights after the season - they wouldn't have had the room to re-sign him (would have been tight if the cap was increasing by the avg I mentioned). Even if you were going to trade him you could have gotten someone better than Blais (who was constantly in and out of the doghouse in STL).

Goodrow - trade was fine but the contract is awful.

signed Nemeth (3 yr @ 2.25m) and Tinordi (2yr @ 900k) as FAs - would have been better off signing Marc Staal for 1 yr 2mil and re-signing Brendan Smith (who went to CAR for 1 yr @ 800K)

Traded for Reaves and immediately gave him a 1 year extension - an extension that cost them from re-signing Motte at the end of the 21-21 season. Then having to give up another pick to acquire him again this past season.

gave up way too much to acquire Copp - Barron had a decent year when given ice time.

Knowing you had your top 6 LWs locked in for the next few years, why draft LAF in the first place. They needed just about anything else except LWs and goalies. If you are not drafting a generational talent (or close to it) with #1 OA, then trade to address real needs. Could have drafted Byfield, traded down, etc. As much as I like Othmann, unless they are looking to convert him to RW (which they should try - have him start in the AHL and let him learn there) they still have issues on RW.

Not to mention how he mishandled the cap all year. Schneider should have been paper transactioned during all extended periods of off-time between games to accrue more cap space. When they knew Kane wanted to come to NY after they got Vlady, they knew they had no room. So the first move is to trade Gauthier for Motte to take on additional salary. Then wait too long to trade Kravtsov. Then not put Lindgren on LTIR when he got hurt (only played the last 5 games of the season when there was literally nothing to play for as they were already locked into their playoff position). Him on LITR would have provided more space to get either more needed grit for the bottom 6 - perhaps getting Lafferty and Bjugstad - and 1 more depth defenseman. Worse case scenario - you pull the TB cap gymnastics and activate Lindgren for the postseason.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>Are you saying that New York would be bending over backwards to give Detroit a "sweetheart" deal here? My idea of a trade involving both to Detroit would be Trouba (2M retained) and Goodrow (641,667) retained for either Future Considerations or Mastrosimone signing rights. Trouba at 6M is a good deal for us and Goodrow at 3M is still an overpaid 4th line winger with 4 years of term. One of the biggest issues to get around is the trade clauses, Trouba with his full NMC and Goodrow with 15 team no trade list. Assuming they both accept a trade to Detroit in this scenario. Using retention instead of buyouts doesn't save them more next season, actually it's about 700K worse next season, it saves them 1.5M the following season and then like 2.7M the year after and so on. So the long term effects of buyouts would probably hurt the franchise more than the retention. Not to mention that you are gaining 9M in cap space which is the whole idea of this scenario. So is Detroit getting a sweetheart deal or is New York? Both teams benefit from this which is the idea of making trades.</div></div>

I amended the Goodrow trade which should work.

If the Rangers were to trade both players it will be in separate trades. Please see other replies for details

In terms of the exercise, I accomplished 9.5 mil in savings via the trade and the buyout. The buyout won't hurt nearly as much as previous buyouts the Rangers have performed. The biggest hits are in the seasons where the cap is projected to increase by a minimum of 3-4 mil a year. Escrow will definitely be paid off, revenue projections for this season were much better than anticipated, and even with marginal revenue growth over the next few years the 2.6 mil buyout hit the last few years will have little impact. Contracts that look bad today will age better as the cap increases (still overpays but not as big of an overpay).
