Yes most definitely Montreal would have to add (As i mentioned in the trade), and probably entice with better prospect than Poehling. The only way Detroit would consider trading Mantha anyway is if contract talks stall, or they're blown away by an offer. The point of that was to include American players as centrepieces. Petry could be flipped for more assets anyway.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Richard88</b></div><div>PEB costs $1.8m and only has 1 more year. Byron costs double that for 3 more years. Not a good comparison.
We also have plenty of bottom 6 forwards as well. I'd make room for Lehkonen though if you make him available.</div></div>
I meant more in terms of veteran presence, I'd rather have Byron in the lineup but agreed re: their contracts.
I don't think Habs will give up on Lehkonen yet... we are still waiting for a Burakovsky-like breakout (if that ever happens). Until then we're happy with him playing 3rd line, responsible minutes, and being paid as such.

I think people underestimate Byron's skillset, and his speed will help him play longer than most think. Certainly his deal is a year longer than most would like, but he would add more complimentary scoring, PK ability, and more veteran presence (over PEB for example who is 35)

Fair. With potential Hall interest, Andersson getting a pay increase, Kylington, etc. coming up , and Hamonic/Brodie as UFAs, I was trying to come up with creative ways to make room without sacrificing too much talent. Certainly more would be needed from Habs to entice CGY to consider.

Keeping the squad together
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs_Hfx10</b></div><div>With guys like Ylonen, Caufield, Our high pick this year, and the likelihood of Poehling needing to move to the wing we should really consider moving Tatar, he’s got good value and can be replaced in the near future when these guys join the club.</div></div>
Agreed. I think Bergevin had a hard time finding teams to pay his high price (they were busy paying first rounders for cheap, 3rd line talent...). With that being said I wouldn't be opposed to signing him, then trading him if the opportunity arises again.

Could take Byron's spot, or moved (especially if Tatar retained, Domi moved to wing, etc. actually happens)

Definitely can get more value in most of those. Would toss in Byron (if he plays enough before the TDL...)

Agree, I see Weal over Cousins to start unless they prove otherwise in camp.
There are too many forwards though, I can see at least one or both of Suzuki/Poehling in Laval to start the year.

Montreal Canadiens signed Michael McCarron (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
He played well last year before getting hurt again. Definitely a great AHL forward, and if he keeps it together a good 4th line callup option. I'd much rather him come up in that role than stick Suzuki/Poehling in that role with limited minutes.

Trade with Vegas - Gardiner 1 year
Would be a nice fit. Seems like steep price but for a 23 year old locked in @ 4.75 million for many years... I'd do it.
Don't know if the Habs would want to give up their 2020 1st though, could be another year.

What to do now
Don't think Danault is moved, too valuable to the team - Bergeron-Lite.
But Leddy for $5.5M at the same expiry date as Chiarot, I'd have preferred they make the trade. Shaw could have been used there, or one of the other wingers.

Even if you group the Finns, a line of Byron - Poehling - Suzuki would be brilliant. If they can get past the "too little experience" bit...

You're absolutely right... but MB will wait until he knows how much $$$ is going to Domi, Mete and Juulsen, because summer 2021 will be huge in terms of contracts.
Unless of course Alzner contract is gone before then, I think that gives him the cushion he needs to comfortably make a big move

I guess so, just being conservative with the overpayment to show there's still cap space beyond
