Yeah, because that's how trades work... Just because you want more, doesn't mean you'll get more. You take what you can get, and in this case, this would be a great trade for Detroit, taking on just two years of Gardiner. We could then flip him (50% retained) at the '23 trade deadline for that extra 2nd that you so badly want...
Pre-Covid, Gardiner isn't even a cap dump, but "in a flat cap world where teams are up against the cap", a 2nd round pick and a high end prospect is an absolute steal to take on two years of a capable defenseman like Gardiner. But no, we don't want your free assets, because "Gardiner doesn't fit the timeline"... :s

Yeah, Yzerman would definitely turn down the opportunity to add a 2nd round pick AND a very good prospect for two years of Jake Gardiner. He'd much rather sign another similar player in free agency (he will sign a defenseman in free agency), and get nothing in return... :smirk

The prospect is for taking on multiple years as well. Gardner is a defensive liability and his offense isn't even that good, he's a plug for 2 years when we could start playing our kids. I'm fine with saying no to Carolina and letting them Keep him if they don't want to meet the price. If we don't get it bye. Flat cap for 5 years, Carolina needs the money elsewhere, they are going for it now and those picks mean squat to them. Lowest I'd go is 2+3+bokk but that's it</div></div>
Gardiner is a better player, and costs less. You don't get significantly more of a return for that. Plain and simple. You're also undervaluing Bokk in this trade, who is a very good prospect. You may want those three pieces, but zero chance you get them. The proposed trade by the OP is much more fair for both sides.

Gardner is a cap dump for them, any player they get is probably going to be an upgrade. They still say no, this isn't yzermans philosophy at all. It's a big cap dump and they said no to deals when it doesn't work for them, just cause you think it works and helps Carolina cool, but for wings and yzerman for a 2nd and bokk pass</div></div>
Staal fit the Red Wings timeline, but Gardiner doesn't? LOL. Yzerman made the Staal trade last offseasoni, and it was a damn good one. Staal is 4 years older than Gardiner, $1.65M more (one less year), and a worse player at this stage in his career. Staal garnered a 2nd round pick. But You think Gardiner should garner TWO 2nd round picks AND a quality prospect? Not going to happen. By the way, I'm a Wings fan, not a Canes fan...

Red Wings take this deal and run. Jake Gardiner may be <em>slightly</em> overpaid, but he's still an upgrade on the Wings blue line. With two years remaining, we could easily flip him for more assets at next year's deadline or in '23. Bokk is a good prospect that looks to be a future middle six (at worst) winger. He's also a fellow German, and had great chemistry with Seider at the U20's. Two of those pieces alone would be enough. Add a 2nd round pick and it's a major win for Detroit. And you want ANOTHER 2nd round pick on top of it? No way...

Maybe you think Necas or Vilardi would've been better picks than Thomas. Maybe you're as wrong as Holland was for taking Rasmussen over all three.

Every year a player unexpectedly drops in the draft. No one expected Zadina to drop out of the top three two years ago. He dropped all the way to six. Stutzle likely goes top three, but it's definitely not impossible for a scenario to unfold where Drysdale goes top three.

RFA's have far less bargaining power than UFA's. If they were unrestricted, they would probably get closer to what you're suggesting. Because they're restricted, they will likely get closer to what I'm suggesting.

Yup, that's exactly the ballpark Sergachev will be looking at. I was between $4.5 - 5M. Athanasiou shouldn't, and likely won't get any more than that. Tampa Bay may not have any interest in a Serg for AA deal, but it won't be because they can't afford him. I may be a tad low on the package going the other way, but change Lindstrom to McIsaac, and/or the 3rd to a 2nd, and that's a very enticing package for BriseBois. That may be a bit too high of a price to pay for Sergachev though.

Athanasiou will not get $6M AAV. This is a moot point, since Sergachev is likely to get as much or more than Athanasiou on his next contract.

"Zero chance" being traded applies to a handful of players in the NHL. Sergachev is not one of them. I'll admit that the value going the other way might not get it done, but Sergachev is not untouchable.
There is a 2nd round pick included in the Svechnikov trade, so Carolina would essentially be acquiring a former 1st round pick, and moving back around 20 spots in the draft. I wouldn't say highly unlikely.

NSH can sign Fabbro to an ELC before the TD and trade him to DET. We would then own his rights until he becomes a UFA. Why wouldn't he sign in DET? We will be an up and coming team with plenty of opportunity on the blue line.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dtd_tank</b></div><div>Some thoughts...
NSH trade: I'd probably barter for Nielsen (ret. $) + 4th for Fabbro + 3rd
TOR trade: Probably only going to get the 1st unless the 4th is conditional (they make it to SC Finals).
MTL trade: I could dig this. They might want more than the 6th, maybe a 3rd.
WPG trade: Not sure how I feel about this one. I'd like to keep Hronek around.
ANA trade: My favorite by far.
ARI trade: Trade is OK, but I'm not sure I like the Howard/Coreau tandem. I'd go to the FA market to get a 1B goalie.
FA & Draft:
1. If we're selling hard like this, Abby's got to go for any price.
2. If we get a top 2 pick (assuming we do since you drafted Andrei), I'd do anything I could to trade up for Dahlin.
3. If you can assume that we could land a top 2 pick, why not assume we can pick up Tavares or Carlson as a UFA also? (You just drafted the top D-man in recent history, have a perfect supporting cast, and could be offered to wear the C instantly. There's actually a chance Tavares comes here.)
So with my overly optimistic changes, you'll have something like:
Svechnikov - Tavares - Tatar
Zetterberg - Larkin - Mantha
Rasmussen - Athanasiou - Frk
Bertuzzi - Helm - McCarron
LGD
DDK - Montour
Dahlin - Daley
Hicketts - Jensen</div></div>
I know defense is a major need right now, but I feel like I've upgraded that in a big way with these moves. I'd love to have Dahlin, but having the Svech-bro's together would be great too. Having a future top 6 of DeKeyser - Trouba, Cholowski - Montour, Hicketts - Fabbro looks great to me. Regarding the Winnipeg trade, do you think Hronek will develop beyond what Trouba is / will be? I don't. That's why I'd make the trade. I don't see Abby going anywhere with the 'A', and although overpaid, I'm okay with him in the bottom 6. Tavares would be a great add. I'd love to see it.
