Cap dump may be strong, but he is a terrible two way player, who's goal scoring does not offset the fact he is a complete defensive liability.
Looking at last years stats, His +/- was -23, 31st overall on the team. Digging deeper, his Offensive Point Share was 7th on the team at 3.6, but his Defensive Point Share was 22nd at 0.2, 15 total blocks on the year and 16 hits. Corsi relative was -2.0 (19th) and his Fenwick was 48.3 (20th). He had a favorable Oz start at 52% so that stats suggest he was getting slightly sheltered and/or PP time, where His GF/60 on the PP was 4.9 vs 2.7 at ES.
For comparison, constant fan least favorite Kurtis MacDermid has a DPS of 0.7. The Avs worst regular was Alex Newhook at 1.3. I'm not saying DPS is the end all be all, but it is a good barometer and it is clear that Oloffson is just a bad defensive player. The Avs do not target these types of players in trades.

Final roster
Last 32 Thoughts Pod, Friedman was floating Philly might do full retention for future considerations just to move Hayes out. Not saying he is right, but I think that speaks to the idea that there is less value for him in the league than ACGMs seem to think he has.

There are pick value trade charts floating around out there. The Avs 1st is worth the 35 & 55 from Chicago. Want to make sure there is value in that sole pick.

Another cap dump to the Avs. $2.5M can be spent in FA for roughly the same player. Hard pass. Now what would you give up for Toews :)

As far as I'm concerned Garland is annoying to play against but great to play with like a lite Brad Marchand.</div></div>
Oh Joy a conspiracy theorist. I too can find "information" relating to this situation on the internet. "One thing: it says nothing about Nichushkin at all. It says the girl was in his room but where was Val? Note: Russians (mafia etc) put women in hotel rooms of their targets so that when the target gets back, the girl is there. There will be a recording device for blackmail."
Don't use incomplete information to try to push a narrative on a fake trading board to try to make your point. That's just tactless.

There is always a lot of chatter about how tight the Avs locker room is. Last year, there was (supposedly) a trade being considered for Max Domi, and the trade did not materialize because of how he would fit in the locker room. Avs rumors about potential trades are so tight because nothing slips out...but the chemistry checks seems to be real. I definitely do not see Garland as a target because of this.

In the off chance the Avs do trade Toews, think mid 20's 2C even if there are other pieces to balance him out. Or a 3-team trade with futures going to a team for a 2C.

If we cant resign Willy
Avs decline. And without being snooty about it.
Start with Lehkonen. Flexible top 6 winger that is great at ES, can PP and PK, MacKinnon loves him and is at a great contract. He is an incredibly valuable part of the Avs top-6. Swapping him straight up for Willy would be unlikely, primarily due to contracts. Willy might be a better scorer, but the versitilty is what the Avs value in Lehky.
Byram straight up for Willy is a pass as well. He should be signed for a bridge deal around 3x4.25. His health has been concerning, but the expectation is that he will continue to develop into a top pairing D. If Toews walks, there is a high expectation that Byram plays with Makar.
Ultimately, while Willy is a nice piece, the Avs cannot subtract two very important players only to add to areas of strength (scoring). Any big swings the Avs take this year should be at 2C.

Avs had the highest % of minutes in the league of defensemen playing their off-hand, so that gives a ton of flexibility for D pairings imo. I'd be more interested in Oloffson retained than Stillman.</div></div>
I was thinking of him at LW, but Middlestadt at 2C could be a legitimately interesting option...and an asset saver...then no need for the Hayes trade. I am going to have to go play around with that idea :)

A big IF, but if they find that Toews wants too much (say 8x8), he gets moved, right? And if so, where. I was thinking about younger forwards with term / a team that would be able to sign Toews. You have to admit Buffalo makes a lot of sense, no?
PS I hate the Hayes trade, but I am racking my brain trying to figure out a 2C at the right price that makes sense.

Get him some consistent linemates with some finishing skills ie Nichushkin with a consistent 15-18 minutes a night and I think he is a 50pt player. Sure as hell if he got 20 minutes a game like Compher did last season COL wouldn’t be wondering if he could be the 2C.</div></div>
I watch roughly 75-80 Avs games a year on TV (yes I have a problem but I am older and on the east coast so I can do it when everyone is asleep) and the thing that makes me crazy about Newhook is what comes across as a lack of aggression / being too selfless. I agree his linemates have always been a poor fit, but he also seems to pass up taking a shot, over-passing, etc. He is clearly very smart on the ice, has a great motor, etc. He shot 12% last year so he can bury the puck, but he averaged less that 1.5 shots per game. I would LOVE to see the switch flip and see him shoot more. If that is from the 2nd/3rd LW or at the 2C, I am somewhat indifferent, I just want him in a spot to succeed.

I don't see the Avs trade as constructed. One strategy the Avs have employed is signing college FAs and Meyers was a BIG get for them. I think that other potential college FAs view how they treat Meyers as a long term reflection of how they might be treated.
PS thanks for not trading Hayes to the Avs

Another PLD trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>The reason I think it isn’t good is you create 2 holes to fill one. I am admittedly probably higher on Newhook than most and think he has 60pt potential, which is what PLD. Love or hate Girard he is a top 4 dman cost controlled for 4 more seasons, and if you give PLD $8.5M Toews is good as gone so in a season you could be counting on Manson to not only be a top 4 guy but a top 3 guy. Hopping back to Newhook say he doesn’t become a 2C at worst he’s a cost controlled asset to drive scoring on the 3rd line where you have no real center prospects in the pipeline (imo Foudy is better suited at wing). The final part imo is the stickiest, what happens when (if) Landeskog comes back? You just added a ton of cap but Mikko and Makar will be coming due in a short time what happens then, if it is will worry about it then ok. But ultimately for me PLD is 25 and has now asked to be traded from 2 different franchises, and while that’s his right how he stopped trying particularly in CBJ is very bothersome.</div></div>
Cheers for that. FWIW, I will never be a "trade Girard" guy. I love him as a 4/5 D-man. I am enamoured with the idea of a legit 1C/2C scenario. I hoped that with PLD in a comfortable spot, it would bring the best out of him.
All that said, the 2C spot seems to the thing that defines this current team construction, and I agree, it is swapping problems. I will be curious to see how it plays out.

Another PLD trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bcooke</b></div><div>I think PLD is the perfect fit at 2C for this core. My issue with this trade is the Girard for Heinola swap. This scenario where Girard is gone and that cap space is replaced with Barbashev likely costs the Avs Toews next summer and then the D core is severely lacking.
If we get PLD, I think we know that Girard or Toews is gone, but can't set ourselves up in a position where we lose both. Personally would keep all of our D this year and skip out of Barbashev. Go into next summer knowing that Toews is probably gone unless we get bad news on Landy.</div></div>
I'm definitely not a "Trade Girard" guy. I also think that Barbashev is playing himself into a bigger contract than $5M a year. I will say the idea of those top 2 lines in compelling and makes the Avs scary again.
