See, this is the type of constructive comment that I'm looking for, lol. I think that with the retention, the Jets would seriously consider doing Lucius, Heinola, a 1st and the other two. Stanley doesnt actually have value to us, we just need him off our books to make the money work this year. From the Jets' perspective, Cirelli becomes a 2C this year, and probably next year, then in year 3 is our 3C behind Scheifele and Lambert, with Lowry as 4C and it all sort of works at cirelli for 5.25m but becomes hard to fit at a higher number. If Tampa would consider retaining if the Jets make the offer worth it, I think there's a chance for this to work for both sides. Tampa would clear 5.25m in cap space and return three cost-controlled assets (heinola, lucius and the 1st), then a couple of reclamation projects who might be cheap depth as early as next year.

the reason this works for the Jets is because if they get Cozens, they don't really "need" lambert, as he's a top-6 centre, but his spot is taken by Cozens.

This kicks the can down the road for the Sabres, but I'm not sure that's what they're looking for so I'm not sure this makes a ton of sense for either side. I think the Jets want to keep Lambert because while he won't be a massive contributor this year, he could come in next year and provide solid value at C in a sheltered role, then turn out to be a difference make in years 2+3 of his ELC while he's cheap.

I want the Jets to get a Centre that has two years left of term so that we can promote Lambo next year, play him at 4C against the other team's 3rd and 4th lines, and break him into the league then promote him to 2C behind Scheifele for 2025-26. With the way the Jets are currently structured, I could see them coming into next year with a 4th line of Barlow-Lambert-Mcgroarty and just getting that 4th line out against the other team's bottom six and letting them learn the NHL game together for the first half of the year, then bringing in cheap veterans for the playoffs if they're not having a lot of success.

The only reason Crosby would leave Pittsburgh is to go after more rings, and cement his legacy. While he may decide to go play in Colorado with his buddy Mackinnon, Colorado doesnt really have the assets to make this deal work for the Penguins, so I could see Dubas not wanting to do that, if it can be avoided, and I don't see Crosby wanting to screw over the Penguins in the process.

I could see the allure of bringing the cup to Canada being a major selling point to Crosby to make this happen.

Systems-wise, he's a perfect fit for the style of play that Winnipeg is using this year, and he would slot in perfectly on the "second" line. I use quotes on the "second" part because Connor-Perfetti-Crosby would be a first line on every other team in the NHL, and could easily be considered the first line in Winnipeg as well.

it's not that he can't play, it's that we need the roster spot for younger players on the way up.

Per Capfriendly, were Schmidt to be bought out this summer, it would be a 2.716m cap hit in 2024-25 and a 1.61m cap hit in 2025-26. For the purposes of this argument, the 1.61m in 2025-26 isn't really a huge factor, but were the Jets to give up an asset to move Schmidt, it would be to free up the 2.716m in 2024.

I frankly don't think the Jets are willing to upset chemistry and vibes and whatnot just to save a little cap space at the deadline this year, so we would be trading Schmidt at the draft to save the 2.716m buyout cap-hit, so you shouldnt be looking at the overall salary because while I'm sure the Jets would like to save a few mil, it doesnt really matter if we're spending to the cap anyways, because our salary will be the same either way.

Where it gets really interesting is if you want Schmidt at 50% retained for free. Jets free up 2.975m in cap space (more than the buyout), they save a pick, and you guys get the player and also save cap space.

Like a third? we can buy him out this summer so it would be just to get him off the books for any deadline acquisitions, but I frankly don't see the jets doing that tbh. He's a little overpaid but he can still play, putting up very effective minutes in a shutdown role, so we only really need to trade him if we're bringing back a big ticket trade acquisition with term. if you want him at the draft, you can probably still get a third, but I could also see the Jets being in a position where the third is worth more than the $1.5M in cap space freed up by trading him vs buying him out, so you may need to settle for a 4th.

Perfetti isnt bridging. It's going to be a long term deal. he has injury history but is legit great when he's on the ice, so a long-term deal makes sense from both sides. 6Mx 6 years puts him at 28 and able to cash in again at the end of the deal if he wants to, but guarantees him $36m, and gives the jets cost certainty for the forseeable future.

Also, you let Dillon walk and buy out Schmidt. Extend Demelo as long as the ask is reasonable, there's no reason to break up him and Morrissey.

Salomonsson starts in the AHL but is probably the first call up if there's injuries.

go into the season with cap space and make a deal for an RHD if that third pair isnt getting it done, or spend up at forward and trade for a 2C with term at the deadline this year.

That's kind of where i'm at as well. Jets will get a quality 1b/2C centre out of those four options. I think we still need to bring in a difference maker for this year and next at 2C if this team has a hope of doing anything in the playoffs. Bring in someone as either a rental or with two years left on their deal to try and swing for it while the Mcgroarties and the Lamberts of the world mature into the NHL. As much as I love Perfetti, I think he has a chance to be a top-10 LW or top-10 RW in the league, but will always be a middling centre due to his size. I really want to see what Vilardi looks like between Ehlers and Perfetti and to see if he can be the Jets' 1b of the future. If he comes in and looks like a legit Centre, then that completely changes what I think the Jets should do at the deadline.
