My thoughts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>I know, which is why drouin's trade value is higher which is why I would trade him. 2 years from now the habs will potentially have Poehling, Suzuki, Ylonen, Ikonen, Teasdale, Evans, and maybe other prospects they havent drafted yet etc. Pushing for a roster spot. One of them will replace tatar. A free agent would replace drouin if he was traded.
The point I'm trying to argue is that between Tatar and Drouin, Drouin gets the habs a top D, Tatar does not. Between Tatar and Drouin, Tatar was a more valuable player to the habs last season, and therefore is a safe bet over the next 2 seasons as well.
I have to disagree because it is clear that MTL isn't ready to actually compete yet with the Tampa and Bostons of the league so why not get a **** ton of value Tatar who is coming off his best season and keep Drouin whose value is low right now. Tatar should be able to fetch you somewhere around the 1st,2nd,3rd he was dealt for from Detroit to Vegas (probably a bit less). Letting Tatar play out the next 2 years and walking after that doesn't let the Habs maximize the value of their players for the future. I can't see MTL being contenders until 2 years from now so moving Tatar makes more logical sense. Also, if Drouin doesn't fit again next year then he could be on the trade block aswell considering the large amount of high end forward prospects that MTL has.
Drouin has more value in a trade, Tatar has more value in the habs lineup. It makes way more sense to trade Drouin, unless of course you think he will live up to his potential, which is tough to say.</div></div>

Awful for MTL. When an overpaid player has an awful year a team will be willing to pay less for him not more

As good as Tatar is, he is unlikely to be in MTL after his contract finishes

Can't see MTL trading Drouin for a 31 year old, regardless of the fact that he is a very good player.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Price_is_the_goat</b></div><div>idk why the habs would trade him. he's a solid top 9 player</div></div>
The reason they would trade him is they need roster space for Suzuki and Poehling in the Top 9 for the 2020-2021 season

IMO if you are trying to get Ehlers you need to start with pick #15 and then add a roster player and a prospect

I like Juulsen but he's coming off an injury and can't really see him becoming more than a #4 and Shaw's value is likely around what the Habs originally traded for him

Even though Habs are taking a salary dump that is not nearly enough for Ehlers. Too much low-middle end talent

Hands and Vision maybe yes but capability of playing against other teams 1st lines and all around solid. Danault isn't necessarily great at any offensive aspect of his game but he's solid all around.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>I know danault is valuable, I like him. He's valuable right now because Domi can't handle the defensive assignments as a C, Kotkaniemi was only an 18 year old C, poehling was finishing college and Suzuki finishing junior.
3 years from now:
- KK will be 21 and hopefully a barkov type C.
- Poehling will be 22 and is a two way player with more offensive potential than danault.
- Suzuki will be 22 and models his game after Bergeron. He might just be a winger in the NHL, but it's too early to say.
- The habs will still likely have Domi, who is a better option for the top 6 than Danault.
3 years from now, Danault is #3C on the habs or he's gone. Or all of those players mentioned above somehow had there development blown, but I see at least 2 of those 4 working out.</div></div>
Alright so if KK is good to go at 21 he can be the #1C but i dont see Poehling being a 2C in 2021-22

Danault might have been the Habs most valuable player this year. If he plays anything like this then he needs to be on the team</div></div>

Duchene worth it or not
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>Him, domi, and danault would make a very good 1,2,3 punch down the middle but it would block the path for guys like Poehling and Kotkaniemi who are also centers. Of course you could move domi to the wing but he has looked great a C.
Also Duchene would want a hefty contract that will run into his mid 30s and having 27.5 million invested in 3 players in their mid-late 30s is not a good strategy. Just have some patience, MTL's prospect pool is very good</div></div>
Remember that the Habs have Poehling and KK as centers as well. If Duchene signed in Montreal its likely that after year 1 both him and domi would be pushed to the wings. Something like
Duchene, Danault, Gally
Domi, KK, Suzuki
Drouin, Poehling, Tatar
Most likely one or twoof these guys would be moved but IMO giving Duchene 9 million to not quite be at the elite level is not worth it and will limit our cap flexibility for the future
