And I don't think Tavares is bad. I just keep pointing out that John Carlson had the best season of any defenseman this year, and that adding him would be enough to make Leddy and Boychuck not suck. Since the Isles were collectively -37 while Leddy was -40, making Leddy into an even defenseman for the minutes he plays, while increasing his offense, is enough to get nine more wins and get into the playoffs, even with 16 fewer points.

I think the Caps are one of the top five teams in terms of overall depth at center, and I think Tavares at the top of the list improves that. I definitely don't think he sucks. I think he was 16th in scoring, 12th in goals, and could possibly even improve on that with a team that's got a bit more structure. Or maybe he thrives on the pressure in NY and maybe he'd slack in Washington and fall to a perennial 60-70 point guy. I don't know. But again, I'm counting my chickens on Green, and on Samsonov. The Isles have just as good KHL goalie prospects as Ilya Samsonov, but they aren't rumored to be coming over this summer. The Caps' guy is, so they can toss the Isles the league's best backup to make a trade work for the missing piece that gets Washington past Pittsburgh next year, no matter who gets suspended.</div></div>

Also Tom Wilson suspension is three years too late.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Maybe not for Arizona, but for the Isles, with all their young center prospects... I mean, Fritz could come in and play 3C. Nelson, Bellows, or Ho Sang could be 2nd line center. Barzal has 1st line center locked down. So for the Isles, I don't see -Tavares as a very significant subtraction. It's like when the Oilers traded Wayne Gretzky, lost the trade horribly, but still won the Stanley Cup two years later. It's a team game. The whole team had enough depth at center to get by. The Isles do too, but they don't have any depth at defense, and they don't have a starting goalie. And Tavares only outscored Carlson by 14 points this year, so NYI massively wins this trade on value.

Carlson shows up for work a bit more consistently and plays six more minutes a game this year, when he's there, playing tougher shifts with a couple more defensive zone starts and gets, relative to his position, is a much better offensive contributor. Grubauer is an upgrade in net. Carlson and Grubauer wouldn't get the Hurricanes to the playoffs because they're already stocked on defense and not totally awful in net. They need a center. For the Isles, this evens out the depth charts to where the team is competitive.

Carlson outscored all the defensemen this year and was one of only two in the top ten to start the majority of his shifts in the defensive zone (Subban). He's a huge upgrade on defense, where the Isles are weakest. How do we know the Isles are weakest on defense? Nick Leddy went -40 because he had to play all of the defense himself. Carlson averaged 26 minutes a night this year, and had an even plus minus despite playing half the season with Brooks Orpik, and the rest with a random mix of rookies, prospects, and Chicago press box veteran Michal Kempny.

Grubauer is one of the best backup goalies in the league this year, and is a huge upgrade in net, where the Islanders are weak.

John Tavares was 16th in points in the league. 12th in goals. He's very talented, and plays with a lot of speed and determination, but even Isles builds that re-sign him have him at 2C next year. Why not just let Nelson, Bellows, Fritz, and Ho Sang compete for those middle six spots and fix the defense.

The Isles were nine games out of the Eastern Conference playoffs. They gave up 32 more goals than they scored. Tavares was -12. Carlson was even. If you stick Carlson on a pair with anyone better than Brooks Orpik, he should still be even, and Leddy gets easier shifts to where he and Boychuck get close to even again.

Add that to decent goaltending and, yes, the Islanders are a playoff team, even though Tavares scored 14 more points than Carlson this year.

As a Caps fan, this only works if they are sure they can sign Mike Green, talk NYI into including Ryan Pulock, because otherwise the Caps RHD depth chart reads: Niskanen (solid), Bowey (rookie who got ten points on the third pair with sheltered minutes), AHL 2nd and 3rd pairing guys (the top pair was two lefties). Like, if they can't get Pulock out of the Isles, then they have to trade a 4th for negotiating rights and sign Green long enough term that he's happy coming home to retire, before they can afford to give up on keeping Carlson.</div></div>

You are acting like Tavares is nothing special. He’s a top 10 player in the League a franchise cornerstone players like JT don’t come around that often you don’t let him go period
