Yes, I was about to post a fuller version of exactly this situation. If we assume that Kapanen and Johnsson together will cost roughly $5M, then that leaves less than $2.5M to fill out the roster with 6 more players. Something is going to have to give.

Not sure you're right about this -- in my experience, when the poster puts Horton on LTIR (as opposed to IR), that adds Horton's salary to the team's cap. See my contemporaneous post.

No when on LTIR a teams gets the additional amount. This post was for next season, so if you want to include Horton the Leafs get 83m plus 5.3m Horton for total of 88.3m
It's this season the Leafs have Horton on IR, so he part of the 79.5m total. The Leafs are doing this so they have can use add their performance bonuses to this years total cap. Leaf will have little or no performance bonus carried over next year.
In 2019/20 with Horton on LTIR the Leafs will have to carry over all their performance bonuses to 2020/21 which won't be very much. maybe 500,000.
