Description
I don't know if anyone else heard Bob MacKenzie this morning...but I got a lot of respect for that guy...

Anyone on here quoting him for and salary or trade predictions needs to listen to his words carefully.

He hates making predictions...he gets pressured by TV and Radio hosts all the time because they value his opinion...but his forte is breaking news...using his relationships to let us know when a deal is close.

This morning was the first time he threw a bucket of cold water on all the hockey analysts...basically saying they're all (including him) playing checkers compared management offices who are playing chess. The comment was with respect to TDL adds...saying it's easy for media to look the the leafs needs...look at which teams might have matching pieces they're willing to trade..and say that's someone the leafs are targeting...but this morning he acknowledged, FINALLY, the performance bonuses of $3.7m owed to Matthews and Marner....that it's not as simple as hockey pundits just saying 'the window is now, go for it'.

I thought it was a big pat on the back for a lot of us here....guys who pour over the CBA wording and look 2-3 years down the road to see what the financial implications are...

anyway..just wanted to share that...sometimes we need to give ourselves a little more credit for the homework and insight we use even when guys like mackenzie go on the air giving us their forced predictions.

Below are some ideas I've had over the last few months where the leafs can make some minor depth additions without effing up next year's cap.

Igor will not be traded. He will just go back to the khl. I like the idea of small moves. i’m A bit confused about the Horton move though.

It's kind of a weird ACGM roster.....I should have noted that these trades might make sense individually as one-off ideas

Horton's $5.3m is currently on this year's cap because they need to keep him off LTIR this year....next year is fine...so the Trading of Horton could make sense f there's some bigger moves they can make at this year's TDL and need the cap space...a financially sound team like the rangers might be interested in getting a bigger return on McQuaid in exchange for them being the team to stash Horton on LTIR

also...I really don't think we owe Igor anything...if he's not included in a trade he's a guy that can go to the marlies to free up $925k and a roster spot

Not FINALLY, he has mentioned it a couple times on the air before that they need to leave cap this year for bonuses so they don't carry over to next year and really hurt them when they have to sign Marner and Matthews extension kicks in.

You are right that they will be trading contracts for contracts, it won't be a pick for a player. They are not going to trade Gardiner though, he will be an own rental and walk in the offseason. The only reason they trade him is if they get a top 4 RD but that seems unlikely this year.

Okay I thought your trades here were collective.

I wonder if there are any thoughts of grabbing up smith-pelly....
