Quoting: Flames22
Huge no from the Flames. Calgary refused to trade Valimaki for Mark Stone, no way that trade him because of an apparent glut at LD. He is the team's next #1 dman, so if you want him, you're talking Price with retained money just to start the conversation.
And don't sleep on Bennett either. He's better than his point totals suggest.
Thanks!! I like this answer, but I want to tease it out a bit with you. First, I really like Bennett, but he is underused in Calgary (not undervalued) and is a depreciating asset. The Flames had no first rounder last year, so the chance to move up in the draft would be meaningful, I suspect, based on what I've read about the "depth" of the top 15 in this year's prospects. Realistically, on performance, Bennett is worth a second rounder, so the swap of first and a third would be a decent payoff.
Second, a question, if Valimaki is untouchable (which I get), would Kylington be available? I would think that might work, too. Unless Hanifin has run afoul of fans, he's still the best horse in the Flames stable. Giordano, though old on paper, is showing no signs of slowing down and is under contract for the next 3 years. So really there's only room for one rookie on the left side, so without a move, you'll eventually lose one to waivers or expansion. On the right, there's Rasmus Andersson but with Hamilton and Fox gone, there' no one else in the pipeline. Brook is a good Western boy who would fit the Calgary style perfectly.
As for Mark Stone, there was never any talk of him staying in Canada after this summer, so he would have been a rental. I wouldn't trade Valimaki for a rental. That's what picks are for.
