Description
There is literally 1 reason why the Avs have interest in Marleau.

It's incredibly important not underestimate the importance of accounting in Colorado. Stan Kroenke is notoriously cheap with his sports franchises and Colorado is 15.5M below the cap floor right now, he'd be thrilled to add a 6.25M cap hit at a 1.25M cash cost. This is the only reason Colorado is rumoured to be interested.

I know Rantanen and others need contracts but that will all cost actual cash this is one of the easiest ways to artificially inflate their cap number.

Anyway this isn't to say that this is trade will happen or that this would be the return just want to point out the reason why this is out there from NHL "insiders".

Well put point, IMO the trade would be a package, as Colorado has a need for a productive 2/3 C and to your point the owners group will have very little in overpayment of a UFA such as Hayes I see the Leafs and Aves being very good trade partners. I see more of a Kadri/Marleau and a pick 1st rnd 2020 for a Tyson Barrie as great value for both teams

If the pick was a conditional 2nd --> 1st on signing / ECF I'd do it.
