Description

A creative way to move Neal's salary. Melnyk in Ottawa being the cheap S.O.B. he is would probably rather pay a guy to play than to sit at home injured. Trading Neal for Gaborik lets CGY bury Gaborik on LTIR while Ottawa gets a veteran presence to help their young players along. CGY chips in a 2nd rounder and gets back a couple 4th rounders (CGY does pretty well with their 4th round picks).

Only works if Gaborik's contract is uninsured. Any idea if it is? I feel like the Kings would have insured it.

I don't think Ottawa does that still.. Gabs contract I'm pretty sure is insured... Neal's contract is not very good at all. Maybe if CGY retains $1.5M on it then yes

All these trades of dumping expensive, poor contracts on Ottawa are so...bad. Ottawa doesn't want to pay a non performing player 5.75m for four more years. Just spend 5.75m on a fair to good player.
Ottawa is going to have a choice of fair to good players on short term deals as teams need to dump cap.

Believe Gaborik's contract is 3.875m paid insurance, 1m by the team.

I know Ottawa management is criticized (for good reason). But they have set themselves up with future draft picks and lots of cap room. If done correctly they can be good team and soon. No use gumming up cap space with Neal or similar contracts.

any player with more than 2 years left on their contract will cost any team ALOT to dump
