Description
Gusev is a player I would love to have, and I think he would mix well with our roster, but I also don’t think he fits. With our plethora of forwards upon acquiring him, things become tougher with him on the team, both cap-wise, and fitting-everyone-in-the-lineup-wise.
The Colorado trade is where I’m going to get a lot of hate. I agree it’s not well thought out. For the team with the most cap space in the league, I think Shattenkirk works. I would take less of a return if that’s all they offer, but I think this is valid. Shattenkirk when he was good got a lot. His time in NY was injury-plagued, and he never was able to prove himself after that. He had a hard time finding his game, but with a change of scenery, he could benefit.
Here’s my thinking behind the value: (let me know if you disagree) Kreider is worth roughly a 1st (with no extension in place). Then, if you add Shattenkirk, it becomes like a 1st and 3rd (if the team is willing to pay for him). Because in this scenario Kreider is coming with an extension, Shattenkirk’s full salary is taken on. Up to 2.65 million can be retained by the Rangers in this scenario. The condition on Shattenkirk is simply so that we get compensated if he finds his game again.
Namestnikov and Fast trades are straight forward.
Strome is the one player who gets traded at the deadline.

Avs dont need Shattenkirk ... they are deep with excellent high ceiling defenders who need minutes. Makes zero sense for Colorado.

On the the right side, don’t they only have Johnson and Makar?

I dont think they trade fast. This is a team that while the rebuild has gone a lot faster then expected, they shouldnt expect all those young players to play at a non rookie level for this year. I think they look at the team as making the playoffs in 2021/22 and pushing for it in 2020 and as such the trades would reflect that. Unless something ridiculous like trouba falls in their laps again. I also think they want veterans on every line. I tend to think the 4 most likely players they would trade in order are: Names, Krieder, Strome and then d'angelo (bc some team might fall in love). trade any one of the first 3 and bo smith and they are under the cap for the year. also i just dont see them trading the gorgieg with the expansion draft next year. In 2 years all of the bad contracts on defense will be gone anyway.

I would be fine with that. This post was just to explore the idea of trading for Gusev, and how it would work.
