I'd be happy is the Islanders protected their pick this year because that team's unprotected 1st next year could be.........good. If we get the 2023 1st then we get a mid 1st in a stacked draft. That's a win-win.</div></div>
I think its all win for the Nucks. Tough situation, good squeeze

This is what Lou does ... see Devils, NJ. He pushes and pushes until there is just nothing left. It works for a time, but a few bad drafts and that's it, no where else to go.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Devil</b></div><div>1. Ruff extended, Brunette walks
I think Ruff gets a management role and Brunette gets promoted
2. Bratt extends over the summer
Agreed, 8x8
3. Graves and Severson walk (short-term UFA signed)
Agreed, not sure who though. Maybe a trade
4. A big deal is done at draft
I could see trading UFA rights trade
5. Blackwood not qualified (back-up signed)
Agreed but Schmid takes backup role
6. Sharangovich gets 1-year
Agreed but maybe we can finesse him into long term low AAV contract
7. Zetterlund gets 1-year
Same as Yegor
8. A mix of options used at 3C
Henrique🙏
9. Miles Wood walks
Agreed and Foote takes his spot
10. All four expire
Agreed</div></div>
Like your take on 1 ... think it would be a mistake to let Brunette get away & yet it would be hard to completely jettison Ruff. It would seem out of character for NJ.

That may be true, but UFA signings are forward looking.
Kadri was had a fantastic walk year & no injury ... ROR hasn't looked himself this season & has to return from a broken foot at some point. I agree GMs can be reckless, but there will be some questions, unless ROR returns and re-establishes his value with his historical level of play. You are probably right, but league wide Cap Room will be tight again & that's a tough contract to swallow ... for his sake, I hope he gets it.

Not sure that's a great comp. Zacha is 25 & while he can't score goals for some reason, he's a very solid, versatile, middle six guy, without any injury history. It's not a horrible investment. He won't even be 30 when that contract terminated.

I'd certainly love to see that, though NJ tax is a killer for the Devs to compete for any UFA vs other franchises.
Poor first half for ROR for sure ... Coming back from the broken foot & playing well will be key to establishing his value, particularly in playoffs (if Blues make it or he is sent to a top contender). This first half will certainly raise questions.

Him at 5m would be ideal, but I doubt he takes a paycut at all, there are always teams desperate for top 6 Cs</div></div>
100% some GMs are suicidal. I just don't get how they don't learn. This was just a typical AGM fantasy post. As a NJ fan, I'd love to see Hughes-Hischier-ROR-McLeod down the middle, I think it would completely transform the team. Maybe even more than GK, 3C is a weak spot for them. Thanks for the post.

Absolutely fair, hovered over that signing longer than the others. NJ still has control, not sure if there is value there, but at least they can try to trade his rights.

Just a few trades
Devs probably don't get another look, as the acquiring team will push hard to resign him (maybe even require it as part of the trade), but Id rather NJ wait the Meier saga out. If he goes UFA after 23 24 season, NJ should still be in position (with the Cap room) to sign him (assuming Fitz plans appropriately, which he has proven to do so far). I just dont like giving up all these assets for that crazy contract. I think it will hurt NJ long term. Doesn't seem Fitzgerald's methodical style.

There are also Cap constraints that have not been considered. Marino will return soon. Even with netting out Blackwood's contract, there's no room for Demko without dropping another player from the year long rotation.

That's the rub ... its not only cap room today, but cap room for a $10 mil QO next year, unless you let let him walk.
That contract takes too many teams out of play to extract full value.

NJ Deadline Questions
Agree 100%, he stands pat.
Fitzgerald keeps all future assets, unless he can pick up a veteran 3C, that fits cap, with playoff experience at deep value (like a 5th) ... unlikely all those stars align.
It's been a great season. The chemistry struck with vets/youth & blueline depth have been a revelation... I think he keeps all the UFAs and rides it out. Hughes, Hischier and the fans want to win now. Fitz will feel that, let it ride & accept the lost opportunity of gathering more future assets available by way of trading Sever, Graves, Haula, Wood, Tatar ...

Tough to say, Fitzgerald plays a bit of hardball on the RFAs. Suspect he will offer a one year deal with a crap raise, unless Sharangovich breaks out hard, which I think is unlikely with his linemates. Maybe 1 year 2,350,000 - 2,500,000 Range

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>glarson17</b></div><div>Meier broke out last year, he was mid before that. He didn’t score in the first 9 games of the year and still has 26 this year, on a 62 goal a season pace since that time. He’s on another level than sharangovich.</div></div>
Agreed 100% Meier is the better player by a fair margin ... but Sharangovich is in NHL year 3, Meier year 7. I think we know what Meier is but do we know what Sharangovich will become? Maybe this is it, but it would be logical to imagine he will progress. Currently a 2nd line / 3rd line 20 goal guy with PK abilities & a decent runway of team control ... that's very valuable in todays cap strapped world. We've seen crazy payoffs for similar guys at deadline last few years. I wasn't suggesting Sharangovich was better, but you seemed to indicate Sharangovich and Filmon were of dubious value vs. Meier. That didn't seem correct to me. Once the economics & the extra assets (picks and
Bahl) come into play, it's seems to be out of market. Meier's contract is a tough ask.

Honestly Meier to NJ just makes too much sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>glarson17</b></div><div>Having a good season after being drafted in the 6th round doesn’t make you a top prospect. Doesn’t fit San Jose’s need either so that doesn’t make sense. And sharangovich could be 2nd line in San Jose but realistically I don’t think he’s a top 6 player, more of a third line guy. He also needs a new contract at the end of the year and is arbitration eligible which makes teams hesitate to deal the that headache.</div></div>
Why was Filmon drafted 6th round & who was his peer group going into the draft, worth considering? It would be a mistake for NJ to trade him based on that, but sure, I guess draft year position matters. Or does it? Bratt was 6th round, NHL next. I'm not calling him Bratt, but odd things happen when scouting with imperfect information (like with covid blackouts) & drafting teenagers. It will be interesting to see where scouts have him after this season at the ripe old age of 18, 3 months.
Career goal per game difference btw first line Meier & third line Sharangovich 0.052 ...
Whatever you believe is the issue with Sharangovich's contract, it's still team control 3 years for a proven NHL talent at 24 years of age.
Just sayin
