Description
Shae Weber 2018-19 PP Stats:
- Total PP TOI: ~148 minutes
- Total PP Production: 5 G, 1 A, 6 PTS
- PP PTS/60: ~2.43

Jeff Petry 2018-19 PP Stats:
- Total PP TOI: ~208 minutes
- Total PP Production: 3 G, 8 A, 11 PTS
- PP PTS/60: ~3.17

Jeff Petry was a more productive player on the powerplay for MTL last season. The reason for this is simple; Petry's playmaking and skating ability makes the powerplay more dynamic than Weber's shot (see assists). Petry still has a respectable shot himself.

Petry should be on PP1 next season, Weber should play PP2.

POWERPLAY 1:
_______ Domi _____________
Petry - Suzuki - Kotkaniemi
_______ Drouin ___________

- Notes: The line of Domi-Kotkaniemi-Suzuki forms the bulk of PP1. This unit is designed to attack the slot through Suzuki, much like the TB lightning powerplay attacks the slot through Point or Boston attacks the slot through Bergeron. Kotkaniemi and Petry are scoring threats as well, giving MTL 3 one timer options. MTL doesn't have a Stamkos (Caufield), and Domi / KK definitely aren't Kucherov, but the styles still should work for this PP set up.

POWERPLAY 2:
_________ Danault ________
Weber - Gallagher - Tatar
__________ Mete __________

- Notes: This powerplay unit will often be the unit who finishes the powerplay, and if unsuccessful in scoring at least the best 5-on-5 unit is still on the ice. This powerplay will obviously revolve around Weber's one timer, however Tatar and Gallagher are also excellent shooting options if the penalty killers are watching Weber too closely. Mete should be given an opportunity to quarterback a powerplay unit from the point. He isn't much of a threat to shoot, but with this unit it is ok since he has Tatar or Weber for one timers, with Danault and Gallagher for tips, screens and rebounds.

Additional powerplay notes:
- MTL has good depth to fill in / make changes. Lehkonen, Armia, Weal, Poehling, etc. could all see powerplay time. I would probably use Weal in situations where a right handed faceoff guy is needed in the offensive zone. Lehkonen could replace any lefty forward and Poehling could definitely play a goal line playmaking role.

Thoughts?

5v5 L1, L3, L4 will likely not be that

The question is: do they even have the good PP strategy?

Suzuki on PP should help. Great vision for opening lanes and whatnot. I think the Habs just need to stop trying to look for Weber all the time on PP and try scoring themselves more often. They're too predictable. That was there biggest problem last year. Plus I really feel they need to get better strategy for entering the zone on PP. Too many times whoever entering the zone had no idea what to do with the puck once there. No purpose.

I think last year was just a fluke though. Teams on average shouldn't be that bad. It was just one of those years i think. They'll be better but there are definitely some areas to improve.

Fully agreed. I love Weber on the powerplay, but they look for him too much.

Gaining the zone was the worst part of the powerplay last year, they did not know what they were doing.

I think part of the reason the powerplay got better a bit towards the end of the year is because Danault and Weal were winning faceoffs so they didn't have to breakout.

Edit:
I was going to point out that every player on the first unit is capable of offensive zone entries so this should also help, but forgot to include it in the team description.

Suzuki is a monster on the right side of the O zone (during a PP). He must play there. He can use his famous toe drag shot and also set plays more easily for his teammates since he's rhd

Mete has yet to score a single NHL goal in 2 seasons and is now on the PP!
