Description
Biggest takeaways from the Philly game:
- Our defense still is not good
- Keith is not a 1st pairing defenseman.
- Gilbert is not an NHL player.
-Maatta and Seabrook are both still very, very slow.
- Some positive signs in the forwards
- Kubalik and Kampf made a great pairing (Kampf just couldn't win the faceoffs)
- Nylander scored! Still wish we had Jokiharju instead.
- Alex DeBrincat is still our best player

Kubalik and Kampf led this game for me from an offensive standpoint. Kubalik finished with a 57.97 xGF% and a 55.56 FF% and Kampf had a 61.56 xGF% and a 56.25 FF%. The only downside was Kampf's faceoffs. He came into the season with a 49% career FO% but couldn't seem to catch a break until later on. I'd replace Saad with Shaw to take the faceoffs if Kampf doesn't have any luck next game.

Saad was also very good, so moving him up to either the Cat-Strome or Toews-Kane line should work well for him. Still drives play forward well and is still our best defensive top 6 forward by the looks of it.

Nylander scored, but didn't do much else. Give Perlini a shot to play with Toews-Kane to see if he can get a decent start to his year going.

Caggiula was our worst forward this game in my opinion.

Defense is still a ?. Keith shouldn't be our 1LD but we have nobody else, so he stays for now.

Start Crawford because I have him in fantasy.

I don't really see how either of them can help tbh. If Keith plays with Maatta then CDH plays with Gus and having two OFDs won't really work out there. Maatta is also too slow to make up for Keith's mistakes and Keith isn't skilled to make up for Maatta's mistakes. If Keith plays with CDH, Gus plays with Maatta (who will bring him down, and Gus doesn't play good enough defensively to make up for Maatta's mistakes), and CDH and Keith both really like moving forward, and will result in a lot of mistakes defensively.

This defense is a mess. Honestly just put whoever together and call it a day at this point

What I meant is that by getting those players, Keith isn't the only left D (Gustafsson is better at playing on the right side I believe) capable of playing big minutes.

So, instead of playing him 27-28 minutes per game, they can play him 24-25 minutes per game...

That's 2-3 minutes less per game... 2 X 80=160 minutes... that's 2 games and the majority of another that Keith doesn't have to play...

For instance, instead of playing him on the first PK unit with Murphy, they can play him on the second unit with Seabrook...

Strome is a step behind, his speed is brutal but once he's in the play he's good.

Kampf needs to play 4C or wing on a higher line. He's not good against tougher 2Cs or 3Cs from other teams on the faceoffs. Kubalik and Saad have great chemistry, Kampf isn't playing at their level.

Maatta and Seabs are slow but looked decent. Maatta plays good positioning for sure.

Besides the major turn over leading to the first goal by Gilbert, he looked good. He's hands down better then Koekko.

Keith is not a #1 anymore, he looked bad. While made some good plays made a lot of bad plays as well and definitely cost the team a goal if not 2.

Gus defensively looked bad but offensively looked extremely good.

Nylander was absent for 80% of the game but looked good for 20%.

Caggs has no business on the 1st line.

Shaw is Shaw...sometimes overskates but love his style.

Debrincat was manhandled on the boards but biggest effort on the team and skills to shoot.

Kane is hands down a top 5 player in the league...guy is a stud.

Toews was also solid.

Crow....wow...where did Crow go?

I agree on all of this, except I think Caggs fit better on that top line than Nylander did. Nylander has the skill, but I don't think Toews and Kane need a skill guy to play with them, they need a guy like Caggs or Shaw. It was also completely ridiculous how little Brandon Saad played today. I don't understand why Colliton doesn't play him more, but Saad looked like one of the more motivated and skilled guys on our team tonight and he plays less than 13 minutes. Absolutely absurd.
ChiHawk liked this.
