Description
Let's assume that Marc's plan would've worked during the offseason, let's have a look what the team would've look like. Maybe his plan was good but just derailed because of multiple reasons.

Is this team making the playoffs?

My point of view is that the backend would look pretty similar to what we've got now, Chiarot isn't as good offensively but is better in his zone this year so it's a push. It's in front where it becomes interesting to me. I said to myself that adding Aho would be good but one player couldn't save that team yet his addition put's everyone back in a great position for success. Danault becomes our shutdown 2C, Suzuki can take minutes on the third line with very good wingers and Domi boost our LW. We could argue that the RW is still meh especially if Kovy isn't signing in Montreal but with prospects like Caufield and Ylönen it'd be a short term issue.

I did this exercise myself a little while back also.

The Habs would probably have been a playoff contender for sure. I mean simply adding Aho alone should have given the Habs a couple extra wins. Had MB pulled it all off, the team would have probably been closer to what he had envisioned, barring crazy injuries of course.

Problem is so much weighed on that OS working and yet he gave a half hearted one. So it backfired and thus became a negative aspect with nothing positive coming from it.

I don't hate MB and lots of what he has done has been good. But it seems he can't stop himself from making a terrible move right at crucial junctures of his career as GM of the Habs. Great micro GM, terrible macro GM IMO. He needs a president of hockey ops to reel him in when he gets too over the too. Molson doesn't want to involve himself in the team too much so he lets MB have full reigns but I think that is a detriment to this team right now.

Words of wisdom.
