I actually did the math on this deal on Carolina's side before posting it. They've built quite a nice right-side in the minors with the likes of Keane and Kaski. One of those two can take a bottom-pairing role next season, and the Canes can re-sign Hamilton because this deal is specifically designed to handcuff Francis in the Expansion Draft to the point that he has to select a large cap hit from us with no draft compensation.
Here's how the Expansion List will play out in the scenario given out:
If Francis and the Canes don't agree to a deal for selecting one of Skjei/Gardiner/Nino and instead takes Cernak, the Canes can trade one of Nino/Skjei/Gardiner/Trocheck (depending on who has the better year) for a couple of draft picks. This move and Francis' ED selection will pay for Svech's big extension. My thinking, though, is that Svech will likely cost less than Aho because he isn't yet as good as him (that will change, of course, if Svech has a monster offensive season next year). Semin/McGinn/Dzingel's retained cap hits will pay for Hamilton's raise from $5.5M to about $10M.
All Dougie/Svech and Expansion Draft questions are answered in the explanation box.
This link explains Tampa's side of the deal. In essence, Tampa acquires one of the best contracts and defensive defensemen in hockey in Pesce, a late first, a whole third pairing, solid/cheap/cap-retained UFA forward depth, and an opportunity to extend Sergachev long-term: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/325427
Staal would waive to let the Team protect another player. There's basically no scenario where he's at risk of being taken.
In that scenario, the Canes likely protect another league-minimum guy, like Clark Bishop. Essentially a full brigade to handcuff Francis so that he can only leverage a mid-round pick in exchange for taking Skjei/Gardiner/Nino. Even if Staal doesn't waive, we'd be pretty much set in the ED with this deal.
I like Martinook but the Avs just don’t have space to add him, but at that price I might be willing to force the issue.
Personally I think it’s a forgone conclusion almost that Seattle takes Skjei. Just don’t do something stupid like trading multiple assets (ala Minnesota and Florida in the last expansion draft) and accept you lose ONE player.
